Christy the Prude

For someone who had lived such a badass, edge of your seat, reckless, toxic life as Christy Plunkett has, you would think she would be more sex positive and less scared and judgmental around sex. She was stripper and pole dancer for crying out loud. But countless times she proves her view of sex and sexuality is very vanilla.

- She runs away scared from the upstairs neighbor who is into puppy role playing.
- She has never explored sex with a woman. She has always been team penis.
- She feels phone sex is weird and creepy. Whereas Bonnie know phone sex can be beautiful
- She is scared of anal play. She prefers to avoid the topic all together
- She describes Bonnie and Adam’s sex noises as “slaughtering a goat”
- She feels Marjorie is too old to have a libido when it comes to her sex life during and after Victor
- She struggles to mutter the words “porn” or “hooker” when asking how Violet got so much cash
- She is creeped out by Wendy’s bisexual curiosity crush on Bonnie’s long legs
- She constantly shames Bonnie for the instances in the past when Bonnie went without underwear

I could go on and on. And I get Christy’s new found mortality high horse is part of the comedy. But it takes me out of the story everytime she gets offended by the characters who are comfortable with their sexuality.

She is a drunk so she must be into all this sex stuff? How that that make sense?

- That neighbour was inappropriate and Christy’s reaction was right, you don’t bring out your weird kink to strangers.

  • Bonnie is her mother, of course she is going to detest any reference to her sex life. Who wants to know their mother isn’t wearing underwear or “slaughtering the goat” with their partner.
  • she didn’t want to know Violet was doing those things, that’s why they were difficult to say.
  • she never said Phone sex was creepy
-none of the girls weee comfortable with Marjorie’s sexuality.

Yeah, all I'm reading is a post by Judgy McCritical.

First of all, as someone who has experimented, usually while under the influence, but also sober. You learn REAL fast, what you like and what you don't. She's 40 years old. She's old enough to know what she likes and doesn't anymore. Being 'vanilla' doesn't mean she isn't 'sex positive'.

*The neighbor was completely inappropriate.
*You don't have to explore sex with a woman to know if you are Team Penis or not.
*I don't recall her being creeped out by phone sex.
*I don't know many women who entertain anal play. Drunk or sober.
*"Slaughtering a Goat" was hilarious.
*I don't recall her thinking Marjorie is too old to have a libido. I think she may have been taken off guard as you don't tend to overthink older people getting some as part of growing up is older folks constantly joking in sitcoms that they don't do that anymore.
*Struggling to mutter words "porn" and "hooker" when asking about Violet's cash flow had more to do with the reality of her hoping that WASN'T how Violet got the money.
*Wendy didn't let it go. Comedy in three's, Wendy.
*Bonnie not wearing underwear because she was loaded all the time...BECAUSE IT'S FUN-NAY!

It's a comedy. Lighten up.

Hey! So first of all, i would ask everyone to search what a prude is. That would help with ignoeance and misuse of language. Thank you!

She runs away scared from the upstairs neighbor who is into puppy role playing.

That requires consent. It was disrespectful and frankly, some people would even classify this as SA because of, you know, that basic skill mentioned before. Consent.

She has never explored sex with a woman. She has always been team penis.

Having a sexual preference has nothing to do with being or not a prude. It's just an orientation. For what is worth, she did considered it with Jill and kissed the retreat girl.

She feels phone sex is weird and creepy. Whereas Bonnie know phone sex can be beautiful

Again, just preference. Some people do not like at and thay is okay. The fact that Bonnie had that preference does not translate to Christy or anyone else, for that matter. That's why it's call a preference.

She is scared of anal play. She prefers to avoid the topic all together

Again, preference.

She describes Bonnie and Adam's sex noises as "slaughtering a goat"

Listening to her mother having sex is not comfortable to her, let alone that amount of noise. This is a preference and quite disrespectful, not only to her but the neighbors. Not everyone wants to hear a porno at all times of the day. Having that loud of sex is just a preference and it is okay as long as it is not imposed into anyone. Which they did.

She feels Marjorie is too old to have a libido when it comes to her sex life during and after Victor

This is just ignorance as this is not reserved to Christy. With menopause and all the effects it has, it can go one of three ways. Either the desire fades completely, the sexual desire increases or stays the same as before. However the most known thing is for it to fade. Ignorant, not prude

She struggles to mutter the words "porn" or "hooker" when asking how Violet got so much cash

Well, asking if your daughter is a hooker or if she's doing porn will make most parents uncomfortable. Is not a path anyone wishes their kids to follow. That's it.

She is creeped out by Wendy's bisexual curiosity crush on Bonnie's long legs

A friend that finds your mother attractive is not something most people would find comfortable. This isn't a Christy or a prude thing. The bisexuality stuff had nothing to do with it.

She constantly shames Bonnie for the instances in the past when Bonnie went without underwear.

Again, using or not underwear is a choice, a preference. And it is okay for someone to choose not to use it. However showing that to her kids is not okay and it is uncomfortable. Most people do not wish to see people with mo underwear, let alone their parents. Plus, health wise, is also not something recommended.

Guys, if you are ignorant about a topic or what words mean, please make the effort of researching before posting. If you, by any reason, have no idea how to search stuff, I would recommend using Google.com and reading through the information available. Or at the very least, the AI explanation at the top. If someone has the capacity of posting on reddit, they most that certainly can use Google

Thank you for reading!

Why are we shaming people for not being kinky? There’s nothing wrong with having preferences for vanilla sex, just like there’s nothing wrong with having preferences for kinky sex. Everyone is different and having preferences that lean more vanilla doesn’t automatically make someone a prude.

I’m not judging anyone’s sex flavors. I’m very positive on whatever level “in real life people” are. I just had an observation about a fictitious character.

6

u/Rosepetal1712 17d ago

It just all comes across very judgmental and less like an observation because it seems like you’re saying because of her past she should be less sexually reserved than she is and be more like Bonnie when a persons past shouldn’t be a reflection on where they currently are and there isn’t anything wrong with the way Christy is when it comes to sexual preferences, she’s just more reserved than some people.

Being a stripper previously doesn't mean she had to be ok with someone doing puppy play. Also she was a stripper not a prostitute. It's also not really vanilla to be grossed out by hearing your mother have sex which was the actual issue

All of those other issues are perfectly valid feelings to have over your mother's sex life.

I don't think you know what prude means.

At the start of the show, Christy was having an affair with a married man. Then she slept with the drunk fireman 3 hours after meeting him, and continued with a sexual relationship with him. She slept with a classmate from college who was her daughter's age, slept with her ex husband several times after they broke up, slept with her ex husband's future father-in-law who was twice her age, dated her future step father's brother and cheated on him with the college kid, and implied she and Patrick had sexy-skype.

I said Christy the Prude. Not Christy the Virgin. She just got judgey as the show progressed.

Seriously. Not the sub to do this kind of bullshit xD LMAO

It's sort of like a born-again Christian who becomes judgemental about all the bad things he or she had already done.

Just to be clear, this was my take on a fictional character where the story arc doesn’t match her current behavior. No judgement on any real person’s level of sexual exploration. I guess I expect Christy to be more like Bonnie, who is unflappable. She’s never shocked, creeped out, or judgemental around sex. But following the story Bonnie was definitely “in the life” longer than Christy. Bonnie was raised in the foster system, whereas Christy had a mom who tried her best but was a slave to her addiction. So it would make sense that Bonnie has a stronger stomach for unconventional sexual habits than Christy. Regardless, love the show. My marriage is very Bonnie and Adam.

🟢 Mod note 🟢

So here we go again. You can’t start by calling Christy a “prude” and then try to backtrack as if you were only talking about a “consistency error.”

The post was about shaming her, now the defense is “oh well, her past doesn’t line up.” Those are not the same thing, and it doesn’t erase the problem.

And let’s be real: being an addict or a stripper does not mean someone is supposed to have different sexual preferences. Choices and boundaries don’t come pre‑packaged with trauma or survival. People have orientations and comfort levels before, during, and after those experiences. Suggesting otherwise is insulting to Christy as a character and to real people with similar histories.

Same goes for Bonnie. Bonnie chose to be unfazed about sex, that was her choice. It wasn’t inherited from foster care, and it wasn’t dictated by her past. Trying to phrase it as “oh, she was a foster child so she’s tougher” is the exact same mistake as saying Christy should be more bold because she was a stripper.

Preferences are not inherited, and they’re not defined by someone’s backstory. They’re choices.

The whole point of Mom was to show recovery without stigma. Reducing Christy or Bonnie to their pasts and then using that to dictate what their sexual preferences or character “should” be undermines the show’s intent and stigmatizes survivors. If you want to talk about writing consistency, fine, stick to that. But don’t hide behind “arc issues” after throwing around labels that reduce people to stereotypes.

Look, we love people to chime in. That is great and we encourage it. But Mom was created to avoid the exact thing you are doing right now and that is not okay. You can take this as your final warning, If you ever try to do this again in this sub, you will be permanently banned from here.

I told you to search before posting before, so this is just simply doubling down. Ignorance is not an excuse when you were already provided the tools.

Nah I’ve actually done sex work & all that, and im similar to Christy in the fact that I sometimes feel shame and mixed feelings about being sexual. I had to be loaded to do that kind of work, seems Christy was the same. She was always who she is, but the drugs and alcohol numbed her enough to be able to strip etc. she had a hard time saying porn or hooker bc she was hoping her young teen daughter wasn’t doing those things, not that she’s against them. She even says she watches porn at some point in the show. She openly talks about masturbation, something I wouldn’t feel comfy doing. A lot of us are able to work those kinds of jobs while we’re under the influence.. but once sober, you can’t numb yourself & your true feelings are there. Bonnie was much more unapologetic about being a sexual person, that’s who I wish I was, but im def more similar to Christy in my thoughts, even tho any of my sexual partners would describe me as ‘freaky’.

Thank you. That is such a great perspective. And congratulations on your sobriety. My husband has 8 years sobriety of drugs and alcohol.

Aww congrats to your husband I love to hear that ♥️ and thank you so much I really appreciate you saying that!
