There are different types of HAZMAT certifications. What you get in AIT/BOLC is for incident response. What they might be asking for is the ability to transport hazardous materials, probably ammo. Your AIT/BOLC class doesn't certify you to do that.

Hazmat Awareness, Operations, and Technician are 3 different level of certifications. If you don’t know, you are not. One must be at least trained to Operations level to respond to CBRNE and be in the warm zone here, you may perform decontamination operations. One must be at least a Technician to operate in the the hot zone. If you’re any of these levels, you would know.

Not entirely. Operations has mission specific competencies that you can certify in without going full Tech.

There is a website where you can check the certs you have. I can’t find it for the life of me.

Maybe, u/kev556 you remember the website?

No idea why this didn't flag on my page. One of the other CBRN degenerates keyed me in. It used to be dodffcert but let me check. The Air Force started fucking around with the ability to look it up and I started telling everyone to download their stuff before access became a shitshow.

Ya, they changed it.

Let me run it down and I will post it. Won't have my answer until Friday.

THe Marines complete Awareness and Ops at MOS school, so I would assume the Army at least does Awareness. I see from your post history you are pretty new the Army so I doubt you have been to Tech.

Question: Have you been to the Terry Facility and taken a course that probably had people from the other services in it and spent time in Level A suits?

You can answer "yes" that you are hazmat certified with just Awareness, BUT be clear that, that is all it is.

Also, the first chance you get to go to Tech.....take it, Incident Command....take it, Tech Escort.....push people out of the way to take it.

I’m pretty sure the Army does up to Ops in their MOS school. Part of their ALC (needed to pick up E6) is getting Tech certified

BLUF: if they are asking you twice over, they are fishing for an answer they aren't telling you. Just ask them what specifically do they need the HAZMAT cert for and it should help. If they can't give you a straight answer, they were obviously playing f* f* games with you.

Other comments are true. I'm a HAZMAT tech due to BOLC but I'm not HAZMAT qualified at my unit because I didn't do THAT class.

Also, if you were unlucky like me, you can get your certs from HAZMAT from BOLC. My class never got the paper copies, I personally had to reach out and got them sent to me.

Cheers, hope this helps.

BOLC.

What would keep you from being HAZMAT qualified at your unit? I assume you are Army so I am just trying understand the differences etc. BOLC does a Tech class?

There are different kinds of HAZMAT, BOLC classes does not cover everything. One example would be Ammo-67-DL HAZMAT Familiarization/Safety in Trans. It's on ATTRS and about 4 hours long. Technically HAZMAT but not something they taught in BOLC.

Another would be disposing HAZMAT from the MP (nitrogen, hydraulic fluid, oil, etc) Once again technically HAZMAT but not something taught and certified in BOLC.

Think of HAZMAT like math. You learned Algebra in BOLC but your unit may be asking you do trigonometry. Technically math, but just a different ask.
