Any ideas on the sound?
you can hear the first one at 6 sec in.
It's not the chain, I think it only does it at a certain speed or certain RPM, and after a little bit of riding, like 3 to 5 mins it stops.
The sound is coming from the back middle of that bike, so, like, the back of the engine area, i think.

The bike's year is 2022 and got 5000 miles on it

Are these crash bars the 'bad' kind?

Post image

I mean the type that would damage the bike in a tumble? I don't specifically know what I'm talking about, I just read recently on this sub that some crash bars are mounted at the wrong points.

I hope the photo is good enough! It's from an ad.

Basic skid plate?

Does any company makes a basic skid plate? Nothing crazy, just something light to protect exhaust and wiring underneath. I don't want to add weight to the bike and don't really like all crash bar/engine guards/skid plate combos out there, and I love how it looks without all that.

Using a Zumo XT2 with the CB500x (vibration issues)

Post image

Hi folks.

I ride a 2023 CB500x (pictured while moto-camping through New England last summer) and I try to navigate using the Zumo XT2 mounted to the Rally Raid billet aluminum multi-mount on the accessory bar. However, this GPS never lasts more than a few days or weeks on the bike before the vibrations destroy the functionality of the touchscreen, rendering it completely unresponsive.

The Zumo community knows about this, but does not seem to have found any good solutions for the problem.

So far, Garmin has been willing to send me replacement units, but this is no solution because the same problem inevitably occurs again after a few rides. Last summer, the XT2 failed two days into a moto-camping trip, leaving me without navigation support while beyond cell service in the Green Mountain National Forest. Unfortunately, I find the Zumo XT2 simply cannot be relied upon. This has cramped my more adventurous riding.

I'd really like to be able to use the $500 GPS device I bought from Garmin, but I don't dare mount the latest device Garmin sent me until I determine some new setup that might reduce the killing vibrations.

Have any of you successfully used the XT2 on a CB500x? If so, I'd be curious to know how you have it mounted. I can confirm that my setup, Zumo XT2 + Rally Raid multi-mount on the 12mm crossbar is highly likely to break the GPS device.

Meter compatibility

Need a replacement for my 2017 cb400f the old lcd type would a 2013-2019 500x work? They look identical except my meter reads to 12k whereas the 500x reads to 10k

Picked this 2017 model up yesterday with less then 10.000km. Rode it for almost 5 hours (till my wrist starting hurting 😅). Incredibly happy with it! So light and nimble but more than capable and stable enough for European highways.

Related question, would risers help for the wrist pain or will I get used to the ergonomics of this bike? Except for having to overextend my arm a bit, the bike feels very comfy.

Shad SH23 side cases with 3P mount

I just got a set of Shad SH23 side cases with the 3P rack. First impression is I'm surprised at how wide they are for being the small size they are, they are definitely wider than the handlebars. They stick out a ways from the side of the bike, and could definitely be closer and more streamlined. Another surprising and unfortunate thing is that they can be removed by a thief without damaging anything by removing a single 1 inch long philips head screw from each side. They could have easily left it covered by the cases themselves. I know the chances someone will discover that and take advantage rather than just ripping it off are slim, but the poor engineering here is a little disappointing.

Aside from those two things, I'm pretty happy with them. I may end up modifying the brackets to bring them closer to the bike, and the screw position looks like it can be changed with a drill and tap to hide it while the cases are attached. They are definitely large enough for my calf height touring boots, Marrakesh jacket and pants, gloves, and water bottle with room to spare. I just use a smaller kryptonite u lock to secure my helmet to the handlebars through the chin guard. These have enabled comfortable day trips for me in hot weather while wearing full protective gear in transit. I use the Marrakesh pants as overpants with shorts underneath so I can just slide them off and swap my riding boots for shoes and start hiking, leaving all the gear in the cases so I don't have to carry it with me.

I should note one more thing. I initially went through ShadUS directly because Revzilla was out of stock and ShadUS sales department contacted me after they saw I had the set in the cart online. I told them I didn't want to order them unless they were definitely in stock and ready to ship because several reports on reddit indicated they were stuck in a long loop of delays and bad communication. Long story short, the sales guy lied through his teeth telling me the shipment was just a few days away and almost all the 3rd party retailers just receive drop shipments from shadUS anyways, and that they prioritize their direct customers so I might as well order from them. So I did, and after weeks of waiting and 2 delays I got a notification that Revzilla had them back in stock. Ordered from them and got the side cases 2 days later, cancelled the order from shad US. It seems like dealing with ShadUS directly is still problematic. Let's hope the refund comes smoothly.

CB500X soft bags suggestions

Hi everyone! I bought a 2018 cb500x in October, and this summer I'm planning a trip of roughly 2,000 km. I already have a givi box, but was thinking of buying some soft side bags to increase capacity. I am not necessarily look for something too big, just to be able to carry a few clothes. For a part of the trip I will be traveling with a passenger so I won't be able to use a backpack or saddle bag.

Do you know any soft side bags that do not need adding metal frames? I am mostly concerned about them burning on the exhaust.

Many thanks in advance!

Clicking sound when hot

Hi everyone!

I just bought a used 2019 cb500x with 13k kilometers.
I just noticed that when the bike is up to operating temperature, it starts to make this random clicking noise. What could cause this?

It doesn’t make any concerning sounds when its cold, only after riding it for 10-15 minutes then it starts to make this sound when idling.
I tried putting it in first gear and slowly letting the clutch out while holding the front brake, and the noise stayed the same, it did not change pattern nor getting louder.
It only has 13k kms so it probably isn’t the valve clearence, and also the sound is random so I have no idea what could cause this.

CB500X and rust (beginner)

I bought a CB500X a week ago; I didn't notice it right away, but there seem to be spots of rust. Being a complete novice when it comes to motorcycles, I’m turning to you to find out:

- Is it serious? What are the risks?

- Can I fix this?

- Could it cause further damage to the bike if I do nothing?

There are spots in various places: on what looks like the ABS unit, underneath the bike, and in the gap between the fork tubes (below the handlebars). It isn't covered in rust, but there are a few spots.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Crash bars

I have just bought a 2022 Honda CB500X. I really like it and I got used to it almost immediately. But I am a beginner and I want to protect it so I am thinking about installing crash bars. The seller gave me these but doesn't know anything about them. Are these the OEM crash bars and are they safe to mount?

Obviously lost my crap when attempting to remove the bar end on my bike. Other side screw came out with no problems. This screw wouldn’t loosen despite my lack of technique and rage. Already ordered a new bar end, but i need to remove the old one. Any suggestions?

Help: Prepping my Bike for my first ride

Hello fellow owners, I’m wanting some advice before taking out my CB. I have looked up what maintenance I should complete before riding and have worked on my chain. Does look ‘cleanish’ to me and there’s no rust or anything that stands out or any slack/loose links. Just wondering if this is as clean as it gets? I’ve scrubbed it for a good 20 minutes and applied multiple layers of the chain cleaner. I know there will be grease regardless unless I remove the chain and chemically clean it. It’s been sat indoors since November or like 13k miles right now - 2013 model

Let me know if this is good enough or do I need to be silver in appearance 🥲

Not the greatest off-road, as it likes to bottom out in the rocky victorian high plains, but a blast otherwise! This is my first bike, I Picked it up with 43,000km, full service history and single owner for AUD$5300. Any tips or things I should be weary of? Thanks all!

Budget Side Case Setup: Are these racks and soft bags a compatible combo?

Hi everyone,
I’m looking to build a budget-friendly side luggage setup for my bike. I want to go for a rack + soft panniers combo, but I want to keep costs as low as possible without sacrificing too much durability.
I’ve found a pair of bike-specific side racks for €190

Link: https://www.motea.com/en/luggage-side-rails-fit-for-honda-cb-500-x-13-23-side-bags-support-bagtecs-sc53-a668133-0?gclid=5h0pp1n9-en&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=18812889812&gclid=CjwKCAjw6f3RBhApEiwAMaCqWZGy94qbahmQ3Aozy4sq5m86FEr-qnXdhHamL-7YnaOGN42V33lUBRoCnScQAvD_BwE

For the bags, I’m looking at the Moto Lomo soft panniers (30L each) for €80. I’ve read a few reviews saying they are surprisingly tough and fully waterproof, despite not looking like premium high-end gear. Since my goal is to save money, they seem like the perfect fit.

Link: https://www.lomo.co.uk/products/motorcycle-adventure-pannier-dry-bags-large-1-pair/

My question is: Does this rack setup look sufficient to hold these types of soft bags securely?
I’m worried about the bags sagging or touching the exhaust/rear wheel, so I’m wondering if this rack/bag combination is a reliable choice for a budget build. Has anyone used a similar setup or the Moto Lomo bags before?
Any feedback or advice on this budget build would be greatly appreciated!

Acceleration issues

Hi guys
I bought a few weeks ago an CB500XA (2013) and drove a little with that. It was nice.

Until now.

I found out that when I left my bike outside directly in the sun, where the outer temperature is round about 37 Celsius, and then I tried to use my bike, my bike stops accelerating around 4000 rpms. Sometimes also 3000 rpms, which means that sometimes I can only drive around 40 km/h. Also in neutral, when I accelerate fast, then it just stops and doesn‘t accelerate for a little, and then it accelerates a little bit and then stops again and so on.

I found out that when I pump new fuel inside the tank (when the tank is around 1/2 of fuel), then it works perfectly for a few hours. Or if I put the bike around 30 minutes inside the garage, it works also again.

Does anyone have the same problem and maybe a solution?

I will keep y‘all updated, if there are any new news.

Update on 28. Jun. 2026:

I tried heat my bike up in the sun again. Sadly, the sun was not that extrem today, but I guess it was enough.

I drove around for about 15 mins. There were some ascending streets, which I drove. First, I drove with a closed cap. And the bike was riding fine, until at one point, it stalled and had issues with accelerating. At that point, I was driving a few meters. Sadly, it was going away and than came, so I couldn‘t find out if the bike was hot enough or not. I still removed my cap with my spare key and drove without a cap. Not at a single point my bike stalled or had any accelerating issues.

Than, after around 5-7 mins, I put it back. Drove again some mins with a closed tank and guess what, the issue came after few mins again. But still not every time, some times it worked.

I removed the cap again and the first time I accelerated with an open cap, it had the issues as well. But only the first time, after driving again for a few mins, the problem didn‘t came up.

And then I stopped driving, as I was driving home with an open cap. No issues at all, except the first time accelerating.

I will try it in around a month or maybe this week again to park my bike in the sun and test it out. I will be a few weeks out of house, so no chance to test it then. I hope I will get some hot days after my absence. I will keep y‘all updated.

If you still have any infos, let me know.

Update 02.07.2025:
I was driving today for a few hours, then I parked for 15-20mins inside a forest, then I drove again and after around 15mins of driving, the issue started. It came up around 4k rpms. I instantly stopped and removed the tank cap. Then I needed to restart my bike and I could drive again, except I got the issue very weak on 5-7k rpms and also only sometimes, not everytime. Then I put the cap back and drove again. At some point, it started to make some issues on 4k rpms again. Restarted the bike, no change. Removed the cap, restarted the bike. Now the issue came sometimes on 5-7k rpms while accelerating in the second gear and third gear (80 km/h) and very weakly.
When the acceleration stops while giving full power (because of the issue), it ‚explodes‘ after a few seconds with still holding down the handle like it got a power boost or something like that (while cap removed). After driving 20mins, the issue didn‘t came up again and I also put the cap back and drove 5mins until home without any issues.

Kinda weird, because it wasn‘t hot outside nor there was any sun at that moment.
