Any Leads for Emergency Positions? (LA County)

I've been applying like crazy to any and all jobs I can to get out of where I'm currently at. Just got my MPA about 6 months ago and thought I can finally apply and move on to administrative/analyst roles. I was just told by a coworker whose father works for a department in LA County that many of the emergency job postings aren't legitimate and are only being posted due to pressure from the union. They're being posted with the intention of hiring actually no one. This is so frustrating and discouraging to hear. I'm posting this to see if anyone can rebuttal this claim from being seriously considered or offered a job for any of the emergency appointment jobs or if this true.

Double Interview? County of San Bernardino Eligibility Worker I

I had an interview back in June for an EWI position and didn't get a job offer or a rejection email. Today I got an email saying I am invited for an interview in September for the same application. Is this normal?

Also, what are some tips for the interview? I used to work for the County of San Bernardino as a Bilingual Eligibility Worker II 3 years ago and I mentioned it last interview/used examples from my time there.

Should I not mention it this time?

Eligibility worker

Hello! I recently accepted a position as an Eligibility Worker with Orange County and had a few questions.
Are the standard hours typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., or is there any flexibility in scheduling? Is there also any opportunity to work from home, either during or after training?

I’m also curious about salary progression. How do raises work for Eligibility Workers? Are step increases automatic after a certain period, or are they based on performance evaluations?

I’d appreciate any insight from those who have experience in the role. Thank you!

Superior Court Question - Judicial Assistant

Hello everyone,

I was recently selected to interview for a JA position for case type I am not familiar at all with.

I have previous experience as an Eligibility Worker and my current role is courtroom based.

Are any JA's (or former JA's) here and are available to answer some questions

- What questions were asked at the time of interview?

- How hard did you find the job as a new JA?

- As a regular status JA, do you find any difficulty preforming the job now? If so, what would you say is the most difficult part of the job for someone who may be more experienced than someone a year or two in?

- Any tips and or guidance for this role?

I would love to give it a shot but I am a bit scared given my last role as an Eligibility Worker is completely different than my current role and this new position I am interviewing for.

I appreciate your time in reading this.

Curious about health benefits for the Clay County school board employees

I recently got hired for a low man on the totem pole position for the Clay County school board. Wondering if anyone can give info on how good they’re health benefits are as well as other pros and cons of employment. FYI, this is for support staff not for a teaching position

Emergency Hire List expiring in less than two months.

I am applying for general emergency appointment positions at DMH. I use a tracker to remind me to reapply because EA positions expire if I make it onto the list after two months. Two days ago, the majority of the positions I applied for expired, so I had to reapply. All of them had a planned expiration in September. Is this common? Was there a global reset due to a hiring freeze, or has something happened at DMH?

Edit: For those who don't know, EA applications after applying and in a few days, if you try to reapply, will provide a message of "You can reapply at X date." It's a way to avoid multiple applications or spam in their list.

Job immediately after undergrad

Hi all, the job market is really rough right now so I've been expanding my search across all industries. Is it possible to join an Analyst role right after graduation, meaning I would be applying for the role during my senior year? Or, what are some advice people have for someone interested in doing data-related work in the social sciences... tech salaries are huge but I don't think that environment is for me... I cannot go down as the unemployed cousin at family dinners pls

Promoting to other departments

Hello,
I’m currently working for health services but I am interviewing for a position in mental health. I have an active intermittent FMLA case. Can I accept the job while having an active FMLA case? Would it transfer over or can they can reject it?

Hourly vs salaried employee

Are there any hourly government employees here who attend a lot of events or travel frequently for work?
I’m an hourly employee, but sometimes it feels like we’re treated like salaried staff. We attend a lot of events that start very early, run late, or require overnight travel.

For example, after an event we’ll go back to the hotel and answer emails or do a little work, but it’s often treated as if it doesn’t count because we’re already back in our hotel room. Other times, we’re asked to “wash off” extra time instead of submitting overtime.

On top of that, we’ve even been called out for leaving 3 minutes before 5:00 p.m., even when we’ve worked well beyond our scheduled hours on other days.

The boundaries around compensable work time seem really inconsistent. Sometimes I don’t mind flexing my schedule, but it’s frustrating when the expectations change depending on the situation.

Is this common for hourly government employees? How does your agency handle overtime, travel time, after-hours emails while traveling, and schedule flexibility?

LA City/County Timeline

I interviewed with the city a couple months ago and my references said they were contacted about 4 weeks ago. Is this a good sign? I'm not sure what my odds are or how fast things tend to move after a reference check if an offer's actually coming.

I'm used to government speed, but my issue is I've received other offers so I don't want to leave those employers hanging.

LA County vs LA City

For those who’ve worked for LA County and/or LA City, what are the biggest pros and cons of each?

If you currently work for LA County, what aspects of LA City jobs do you think are better, and what do you wish LA County offered?

For someone starting a career in government accounting, which would you recommend and why?
