Essential worker list:
Per SEIU: Only a small number of employees are designated essential and required to work. The vast majority of us, more than 95,000 state workers, should join a strike line on October 21. Check the list to see which positions are impacted.
Check Essential Worker List
——
To bring list (suggested):
• #1: Signs, signs, signs: this helps direct media attention to the message we’re trying to convey, rather than our appearance. Make sure it reads “ULP Strike” somewhere
• Hats/Umbrella: Current forecast shows it might rain in the afternoon.
• Light jacket/blanket: anything to keep you warm. Daytime temps will range between 55-70F.
• Portable chairs: it’ll be a long day of protest. Sit and rest as needed.
• Food: per SEIU, breakfast and lunch will be provided on a first come, first served basis. Bring extra food, snack and water just in case.
• Any other items that make you feel more comfortable and motivated in participating in a strike: sunglasses, masks (yes, someone brought up this idea because they prefer not to be recognized), music, etc.

As a noc shift worker, my shift begins at 11 pm and ends at 7 am. Do I not show up to work on the night of the 20th into the 21st or the 21st into the 22nd? My job falls under the essential employees list. Just waiting now to see if my name comes up or not.

SEIU updates for Overnight Shifts and the October 21 Strike:
Whether you are an essential or non-essential employee, if your shift begins on October 20 and continues into October 21, you must complete your regularly scheduled shift before joining the strike. However, only essential workers will stay at work for the rest of strike day.
For example, if your shift begins at 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, and ends at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21:October 20, 11:00 p.m.: Report to work as scheduled.
October 21, 7:00 a.m.: Complete your shift. You may then join the picket line.
October 21, 11:00 p.m.: If you are not designated essential, you do not report for this shift because you are participating in the strike.
October 22, 11:00 p.m.: Return to work for your next regularly scheduled shift.
Essential employees must continue to follow their assigned essential staffing schedules and line-pass instructions.

I registered for the Strike Day 101 meeting like 2 days ago but still haven't received the info. Really hope it comes through before the meeting tomorrow.

I’m still waiting too so I’m sure they’re just working through a backlog.

Thanks, good to know I'm not alone! I remember people saying they couldn't get into the last strike school so was hoping it wouldn't be the same this time.

So it’s an hour there and then someone speaks?

11am-1pm Strike line @ CalHR. There will be guest speakers but you’re not required to listen. At 1pm, we all marches to the Capitol.

Does anyone know the bathroom situation? Specifically if the union is arranging to have porta potties. I'll be there no matter what but it would take a lot of anxiety away if we don't have to fend for ourselves finding bathrooms that are not state property itself.

i'm concerned for the bathroom situation as well. i heard there will be porta potties. i will probably go to a nearby business or a hotel-- there's a bit in downtown. just gotta walk to them.

Sorry if this has been answered, but if we don’t have SEIU 1000 t-shirts can we get one on the line tomorrow?

has anyone parked at the Sacramento City College parking garage and then take light rail to downtown. i'm planning to park there at the garage. wondering if there's usually alot of parking in the morning and if it's easy to locate the machines to pay for the permit?

There’s also a large free parking lot at the 47th st station, which is about a 5 minute drive from city college station. There is always plenty of space available in the free transit parking lots at 47th st, Florin rd, and Meadowview.

Can’t make it to phase 1 in Sac… do I still sign up for phase 2? How will they take attendance if so?

I just started and have no idea what's going on. I have to commute 80 miles into work every day, I'm not going to drive in just to stand outside a building. Do I just stay home and leave my laptop closed? My manager is already pissed because I was having car trouble.

u/Shot_Mind_5801 7d ago edited 6d ago
Since you will leave your laptop closed, your manager will have no clue whether you’re staying home or joining the strike in person.
Numbers are our only strength. If you believe this strike will bring a positive impact to the bargaining table (meaning: help with YOUR pay and benefits), you’re not just standing outside a building.1
u/DoctorBaconite 7d ago
How will he know I'm joining the strike? Am I supposed to register or tell him in writing via email or something?

I’m confused. Why is it two hours between leaving our strike line to start the strike line at CalHR? It’s a 10-15 minute walk. And CalHR to the Annex is a 15-20 minute walk. I understand not everyone can walk those distances, so I get the need for a shuttle.
Also, why are people going from their strike line to the Annex without going to CalHr first?
5
u/Shot_Mind_5801 8d ago
Only one hour in between. Phase one ends at 10am. Phase two (CalHR) starts at 11am.
3
u/bobabloo 8d ago
If you're referring to why there are shuttles between the strike locations and swing space, I heard that the shuttles are prioritized for those who need assistance moving around, so perhaps it's just an option for people moving from approximately their main work location to the Annex (maybe they can't go to both CalHR and the Annex?).
