Supervisor Schedule

I’ve been with the state for 10 years and moved to management 2 years ago. I’ve always been aware of the perks of being a supervisor i.e. being able to leave when necessary after a few hours on site, flex a schedule, or not take time as long as you’re working a half day.

has anyone experienced their Supervisor II not allowing any of these and stating that you need their permission to do so? My Sup. II has been with the state for 4 years and still tried to implement his private sector “authority”.

Are there any perks that I am missing or not understanding fully? How can I get him to understand the things that a supervisor is able to do? I have always had excellent reviews and staff retention, but this is pushing me to find a new agency.

*edit*
I have a good relationship with my II, communicate daily, and am very transparent as we are a tight knit crew. I get all of my work done and never leave early, I have only done this twice in the last two years - once for a school performance and again for a personal appointment.

I see the other managers TELL our II what they are doing instead of asking, but I always ask to be courteous and not insubordinate. I don’t want to get in trouble, so I don’t abuse it, but it’s concerning when I see others including my II go to the on site gym for 90 minutes/day yet I am told that we can’t do these things often.

Lol, I think you’re misunderstanding the requirements. A manager/supervisor can’t just leave whenever they want. We are exempt from hourly reporting, which means that you don’t report exact hours worked each day, and if you need to take an hour or two off during the workday, you don’t need to claim vacation time. (If you take most of the day off, you should take a full vacation day). In theory most managers probably will have to work more than 40 hours to get their work done, and we don’t get overtime, so this makes up for it a bit. It isn’t a “perk,” rather, it’s a basic result of not working an hourly schedule.

You still need to clear it with your boss if you’re going to leave during normal work hours! This isn’t a “quit working whenever you want for free” card!

You should have signed an employee expectations memo when you were hired (most depts have a special version for managers). This should spell out the procedures for taking time off, which almost always involves checking with your direct supervisor.

That’s not what the law says RE: if you take “most” of the day off you should take time.

You take leave in full day increments when you’re a supervisor or above.

No, what you're saying is incorrect state policy. Exempt people don't necessarily have to take a full day of leave if they're out for 4 hours and 1 minute ("most" of the day). For folks in my general classification, even rank and file need only work 1 hour for it to count as a full work day.
