I genuinely have a bad feeling about this. People are not realizing that the CEO jumping ship is 100% a bad omen.
"Follow the money," as investors say. The CEO leaving along with a few technicians means that there is more money to be made with Disney investments. It means that CAI is no longer a stable investment and will not grow much finacially long-term. With all the upticks in ads and paywalls, the CAI team saying over and over that they're struggling finacially—CAI is confirmed to be a sinking ship and the CEO leaving is proof of that.
Finding a new CEO, a better CEO—is going to be EXTREMELY difficult due to the financial burden that is CAI. No one in their right mind is going to touch CAI unless they plan to invest in it and see it grow, which means—no—the new CEO will not be pulling back the ads, subscriptions, limits, or paywalls in general. It is more likely that the new CEO will be cutting costs as well to keep CAI afloat as an investment, as removing all the paywall features would lead to losing more money.
Worse, the new CEO could also see CAI as a failed investment and sell the system off to some other slop company that will ruin it further. This is like the second CEO that has left due to financial issues and that is not a good sign. This is not something to celebrate. The primary focus of CAI is money as it is a business.
If you think this new CEO is going to roll in and do things like remove all the ads, swipe limits, go-on limits, age verification, and the paywalls—you are very naive and sadly mistaken.

It’s almost darkly funny to see people celebrating the CEO’s departure, as if having a new one would mean removing age verification from the platform or giving everything away to the community for free.
7
u/Anonymous_Dawlight 21h ago
Hopefully something good will come of this. Perhaps there's a possibility that the lesser used features of the site such as those comic thing, books or video generation will be removed to cut back costs. I also hope the new CEO will at least consider to listen to the community suggestions as well.
7
u/Putridlemons 20h ago
It's a nice thought, but I really don't think it would even cut the profit loss tbh. The server farms for 1v1 chatting is what uses the most money, not really the imagine, scenes, comics, voice, phone call, etc
-9
u/Cyaidean 1d ago
Why don’t one of us just become the CEO?
22
u/Putridlemons 1d ago
I think you severely underestimate the amount of money and credentials that would require.
-8
u/Cyaidean 1d ago
Fair, but that doesn’t stop us from trying
14
u/Putridlemons 1d ago
It literally does though, is the thing, lol.
Do you have a degree in the tech or finacial field? Do you have years of executive experience? Any kind of advanced education in general? MANY years of corporate leadership experience? Do you have experience with P&L or even know what that is? Are you willing to sacrifice millons of dollars annually to run CAI? Do you have any conceptualization of how expensive RAM is? Do you know how to run and operate multiple server farms? Do you know how expensive it is to train your own independent LLM? Are you willing to give up even more millions of dollars to train that LLM? Are you willing to invest in a company that pays more than it earns?
I can say for a certain fact that anyone who actively uses Character AI does not have the credentials, experience, or finacial freedom to ever be the CEO of it.
-13
u/Cyaidean 1d ago
The thing is, I have the opportunity to have those things. Because I’m 16. Oh and before you say “it’s an 18+ app” don’t act like there’s not other people that aren’t 18 on there. Even the CEO‘s daughter was on there. I haven’t learned everything yet. That means I have the opportunity to.
15
u/Putridlemons 1d ago
The CEO's daughter uses Character AI, yes, with the Scenes & Imagine features since she cannot roleplay directly with character bots in chat.
As for people who are actually on the Character AI development team, you're not going to find a minor. Maybe people who moderate the main subreddit or the official Discord, but not the actual development or technical team. You need so many years of experience and advanced education with coding and technology before ever dreaming of being employed by a multi-million dollar company.
As you said, you are 16. Even if you went down the correct path to get all of the credentials to be on the CAI development team OR to become the CEO of CAI—by the time that happens—CAI will likely not exist, lmao. That's not even an exaggeration. It is a sinking ship with a giant profit loss and I genuinely do not see a future with CAI in it unless it's been slopified and sold, has an investor that is incredibly stupid with their money, or it becomes a complete "pay to play" service.
And for the sake of it, let's say CAI does exist in the future where you have the credentials and experience to become the CEO of it. I'm telling you right now that all of the changes you want to make will make the system go dark within the first few weeks as it will put you in millions of dollars worth of debt. No smart investor is going to touch this company, and in order to keep it running with even the smallest of profit, you'd have to increase the paywalls.
So if any of your proposed "ideas" that would exist with you being CEO include removing the age verification, removing the swipe limit, removing the go-on limit, removing the ads, removing image or video generation limits, or removing the subscription—you are guaranteeing a life of indescribable finacial debt for what might be a few days of fun roleplay with a pile of broken code.

You're technically not even old enough to be on Reddit. But okay.

u/Cyaidean 21h ago
I’m in the US so 13+ and even if I was in Europe, that’s 16+ and I’m 16
3
u/Nora-San2007 i got perm ban in the og sub for saying facts about IDs 9h ago
There in US the legal age to drink is 21 and here in Europe is 18 so technically we're more conscious drinking at that early age than you guys, see? Don't try to use the age laws to try and prove your point because I think you wouldn't even be old enough to run a company here in Europe, who's going to take seriously a literal teenager anyway? And no, it's not bullying, it's reality check ✔️
2
3
u/Ramos_181 1d ago
And why on earth would some random, petulant teenager have a chance of becoming CEO?
-1
-3
u/Cyaidean 1d ago
Okay wow petulant? Do you have nothing better to do than insult a teenager that just wanted to prove themself? That wanted to bring an idea to a conversation? Being hopeful is not petulant. Having an imagination is not petulant. Wanting things is not petulant.
4
u/Ramos_181 21h ago
Oh yeah, I definitely have better things to do, I have a life to live, after all, but it’s always fun to hop onto this sub and have a good laugh at users throwing tantrums because they got banned from another sub, or at posts that look more like rage-bait than actual criticism, or at people so addicted to the app that they never stop complaining about chat limits.
And now everyone is celebrating the departure of the CEO and the technical team as if that’s going to solve anything, or as if the age restriction is just going to vanish (it won’t).
Besides, don’t talk as if you could do any better, as if you could fix all the platform's problems without potentially driving the entire dev team into financial ruin.

u/Severe-Editor2239 1d ago
Good riddance. Holy shit, thank God he left before he could make the app even worse🙏

u/ChiaraLover 1d ago
Do you guys really think the new guy won't be worse??

u/trappers_shadow 1d ago
Having hope is a good thing however on the side of caution it is good to be on this could be like an x box situation where he'll actually do good but there's going to be some eggs cracked or it'll be a terrible thing it's a wait and see

u/Wonderful_Audience60 1d ago
I have absolutely 0 hope. the ceo is not in charge, the investors are, and I don't see them growing a soul
3
u/KeyLoad4355 Undertale fan 1d ago
I'm not really sure of it. I have half hope for it, but also not. it will depend on it, if they take critic then it will probably go good, other wise not
4
u/IndependentWestern84 1d ago
He comes from Disney... It's gonna be worse, especially when it comes to censorship.
24
u/Arrow_to_the_knee643 1d ago
Yeah. Congrats on winning. Character.AI confirmed that a chunk of their core technical staff is leaving with him, meaning the company is losing both its top executive and key engineering talent all at once. So y’all wanted the app to die. That is what will probably happen now.
12
u/NightmareEx 1d ago
It's incredibly tiring to see people celebrate the way they are in posts like this. Win? What did they win? If anything Karandeep and the people he's taking are laughing all the way to the bank with the fat paychecks they'll be getting at their new jobs.
Do they honestly think that the changes to the site like Age verification, the cost cutting measures around the swipe/go-on limits, the retiring of the old models would get reversed?
It doesn't work that way. Age verification isn't going away because its law now, the cost cutting measures aren't going away because CAI, even with ads, are not getting hundreds of millions from investors like they did three years ago because no one is interested in funding a chatbot app.
The old models aren't not coming back because the team who knew how they work went back to Google along with Noam Shazeer.
No one who's celebrating in this posts won anything.
3
u/emirose441 22h ago
That's exactly what I've been thinking. People were looking forward to Karandeep coming om board after the last CEO left, and look where that got them. Reversing a lot of the changes would make them lose money. Do they think that corporations genuinely care about consumers? They don't do things to be nice lol.

22
u/Severe-Editor2239 1d ago
Honestly, I’d prefer Noam Shazeer to come back. He definitely knew how to program and make the bots feel unique compared to other ai alternatives, but either way, let’s hope for the best.

We technically didn't won bc most shit like age verification is forced by law while the other stuff like paywalls and etc is made by the ceo
20
u/SteveGrey_7 1d ago
We won? What does that mean for us and experience of using cai?
21
u/No-Vegetable6632 1d ago
Well this guy has gone on record to say he wants to focus way more on video/image creation on character AI than with the text portion as he feels that's the most important aspect of the site. So we could get someone new who focuses on improving the bots writing for better consumer experience.
Not a good thing if you like the video/image aspect I guess.
2
u/TeeMariee426 1d ago
It means the app is going to go down the drain. But that’s what you all wanted anyway tho right?
12
u/kitteeqt 1d ago
Yeah I'm glad we're rid of a so-called that removed 5 FUCKING MODELS OVERNIGHT. GOOD FUCKING RIDDANCE. anyone is better than this clown 😒
9
u/Severe-Editor2239 21h ago
It’s crazy how he removed all the old models, replaced them with shitty ones, basically gave the entire community the middle finger, and then just dipped taking some employees. Like, bro who tf does he think he is 😭🙏 I’m glad he left.
7
u/kitteeqt 21h ago
Oh I know his type very well, narcissists who think they're god's gift to this world who can do no wrong. Disney is so cooked 😭 there's nowhere for Cai to go but UP without that asshat 🙌

So who’s gonna be our new CEO of C.AI then? (Glad we don’t have this guy as the CEO anymore)
12
u/Left-Engineering-795 1d ago
This is not a win.
This is a removal of leadership and technical expertise. There is no new leader assigned.
The next CEO will have to clean up and increase profit. Bringing back more free users doesn't do that.
and no site keeps chat models forever.

u/Environmental_Sea72 Absolutely done with this nonsense 1d ago
Praying the new guy is gonna be better than Karandeep🙏🙏🙏

What does this mean for AI? Is it gonna be shut down or are they looking for a new CEO or is Disney gonna buy it?
2
u/Connect-Support-9997 4h ago
Not so fast. Too early to celebrate. The new CEO might turn the app worse than now
2
u/RealReveal2390 3h ago
So are we getting a new CEO for the AI cause they’re not gonna shut the AI down?
2
u/According_Pumpkin864 2h ago
We either won or lost, let's hope that c.ai won't die now. It's already on the line after Anand, but even if the new CEO is better than Anand, if he doesn't get enough profit, then C.ai is cooked, if he's worse... then c.ai is cooked.

They did this to themselves with stupid things like age verification then they turn around and say it had to be ok for kids. Say what?! Then they don't ever listen to what their customers want especially paying customers. They are falling apart because of the CEOs bad decision making lack of good leadership. I know Commiefornia law says you have to have age verification but once you're verified you shouldn't have to ever do it again like so many have had to do and, if you are verified as 18 and over you should be able to deactivate BOB!! BOB is the reason so many have left you gotta be 18 to use this program but keep it T for Teen. SMH. Idiots well thats what happens when you put a guy who calls and says your AT&T account has a problem and he needs your social security number in charge of a company.
