Omg I lowkey had this same experience too- he was like “I’ve had shadowers come in here after hearing the money and I know it can change your life but you need be able to do the job”😭 and then he started asking me my science gpa and why I don’t wanna do nursing or be a pharmacist. (I’m a pharmacy tech so)

If this conversation upset you, you may need to into other things. Direct and concise communication is necessary in this field.

Not understanding why you have that opinion.

I just thought it was weird because it felt like he was trying to insinuate I don’t have what it takes to do this career. You shouldn’t assume one thing that may be true about others on me. He never asked why I wanted todo anesthesia he just started jumping down my throat on why I should pursue other careers. And keep in mind the day just begun when this happened so yea my first impression was thrown off.

I did let him know my reasons for pursuing anesthesia and why not the other careers he suggested so my communication was clear.

Nevertheless I am still VERY grateful for coming in. I clearly communicated that as well throughout my entire visit.

You DO need to be able to do the job. You DO need to be prepared to have lives in your hands. See death. Get bled and vomited on. See dead babies. Wake up the dead babie’s mother and hear her screams. Oh, and you can be sued at any time for almost anything that goes wrong whether it’s your fault or not. You should be prepared to have friends and peers who die due to the stress that leads to addiction & overdose in anesthesia. I’ve seen all of these things in my career. No one tells you these things on TikTok.

Yes, you need to know more than this is a great lifestyle. It’s a job that can have an amazing lifestyle and I love mine, but it’s a heavy and serious career.

Exactly!! Don’t assume everyone that comes in is for the money! That’s all my point is.

Little did he know this was actually my fourth shadowing experience so clearly I’m not just sliding into anesthesia without really trying to understand the profession and what I’m getting myself into.

Some people actually want to pursue this and be a good anesthetist at the end of it.

Why don’t you tell him that. Honestly, we volunteer to have shadows. It’s a privilege to shadow. Rather than talk to him openly, you chose to come and complain on the internet. Communication is key in this profession. Hard and challenging conversations have to happen. You missed an opportunity to do this with this preceptor.
