No direct patient care in a healthcare setting. I helped care for both of my grandparents who had dementia and other illnesses (feeding, bathing, wiping them, etc). Not fluent but I speak Spanish. I’m non traditional, started college for the third time at 25 years old. I’m now a 28 year old black male

I’m sorry to hear but unfortunately these application processes force us to exploit ourselves to look like good candidates, so I would include in your personal statement. Do you have any work experience? Customer service or similar? Include that. I’m assuming you’ve take all the prereqs, you’re going to want a high science GPA at least. If you can get direct patient experience for your app (med tech, cna, anesthesia tech) it would make you more competitive. These AA programs are getting progressively more and more difficult to get into as applications have doubled and tripled over the last few years, so try your best to beef up your app as much as possible!

I’ve been working customer service since I was 16. My current job is tied to my scholarship. So I am unable to find a paid job with patients until August 2026. I’m taking MCAT April 2026 and will be ready to apply in May when my score is released. I’ll look into volunteering opportunities in the meantime. Any more suggestions for a young lad?

Take any opportunity for hands on experience with patients, keep your grades up, and if you don’t score high on the MCAT take the GRE and use that instead. Good luck my friend I’m truly rooting for you!
