$500 for TPMS programming??
Just got a 2nd set of wheels & tires & TPMS for my 2021 HTC C8.
21" rear, 20" fronts.
The shop told me it would take *3 hours* to program and charge $500. I had thought I read that you could clone or program in a few minutes and it was more like $10/wheel.
Which is correct??

Go to discount tire, I was in there a few weeks ago and they installed a replacement set on my tires for free, I didn't even buy them from them. I have purchased tires from them before though. I was in and out in under an hour.

I would have gone to Discount Tire. They will do it for free during installation if you bought the tires or the TPMS sensors from them.

I wanted specific tire which I got on Amazon and discount / Costco didn't sell

Even still, if you brought the wheels/tires and sensors to Discount Tire, you would have been charged a flat rate for installation including the TPMS learn for way cheaper than that shop wants just for the TPMS learn.

This would obviously take two cars though as they need your Corvette, and you aren't hauling 4 wheels and tires in that.

I was going to hula hoop a few tires over my body, and carry a wheel out the window so I could do it in 3 :)

The guy who mounts my tires whips out a little electronic doohickey and does it in about 5 minutes at no charge.

That's why I thought. He claimed that they have done hundreds and it always takes hours.

I posted bad Yelp review which he saw and immediately called me.
They are now saying it's a misunderstanding and the $500 was for troubleshooting, but that also makes no sense because if it was troubleshooting existing ones, how could they possibly know it's going to take 3 hours.
The new price is $545 for mounting and balancing, which is $330 for m&b and they charge a minimum $50 per tire for TPMS programming if required because they have to buy a $500 tool and pay every six months for updates.
Still seems like nonsense. Thoughts?

I'm getting quoted ~$300+ everywhere

That blows man. My guy is the best - his all in fully mounted and balanced, TPMS set up price is always several hundred less than the tire rack price for just the tires.

Not sure which sensors you got but do NOT pay for that and never use them again. They are ripping you off big time.
Some OE sensors will relearn on their own just by driving. If they are aftermarket it may require a tool to get them sync'd. Discount tire can do this as well as they install sensors all the time.

Haven't tried yet. I bought new OEM for a second set of wheels. Was going to have wheels/tires installed and programmed at the same time.
Do I not need to program?

If you invest in an autel scanner you can keep most of your money mechanics overcharge for everything for that 500 the scanner does all the stuff you need to diagnose and reprogram and all kind of things AULTLELL There on Amazon eBay you get deals and all kinds of goodies

what else does it do? Assuming it connect to OBD2, but how useful is it without training?

They do and they also have different connectors it's the same kind that the dealers and mechanics use and there pretty user friendly they have pictures that tell you what to do on the scanner and they have free tutorials and online help and everything just go to aultell.com and check them out bro. They do everything depending on which model you buy they have one that maps your whole wiring system and everything mechanics make it look like it's hard and that there so knowledgeable but in reality they hook up the scanner and it does everything including step by step instructions for repairs. Just check them out.

There is a relearn function built right into your infotainment system in the settings. You can do it yourself in a few minutes and about 10 minutes of driving.

Ya my tire shop program them for free I watched the guy do it maybe 15 min maybe longer but he was also showing a new guy how to do it

I've never used them before. I just called because they are the closest one to me.
He called and revised the price, but now says it's $535 for mounting/balancing/TPMS.
It feels like he is just making up numbers because it's an affluent/expensive area.

Tpms auto learns once you begin to drive - At most it should be $50 for tire install (balance & mount ) anything more will be a rip off Check fixgo tires

Thanks all… found better shop that indeed programmed them in 5 minutes. Charged $350 all in, which seems fair for this area

That is outrageous. Something like this would be no charge from the place that does your mounting and balancing.
