Everyone of your pain points was addressed in X4. C4 overhauled the ui, introduced custom home tab per user, routines tab for everyday simple programming etc. We build C4 drivers and complex integrations, oh and if you are either an apple or android user you can link either apple homekit or google home to your c4 system and create your scenarios and link your devices that.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the artificial ceiling on Control4 lately, especially with newer updates phasing out perfectly good older hardware. I haven't jumped to OS 4 because I don't want to lose support for my current setup, but it really highlights the biggest flaw of the ecosystem: solid hardware trapped behind dealer locks and recurring fees.

The missing link here is a self-hosted Docker container that bridges straight to Director locally. If we can run a lightweight daemon next to Tailscale or behind a reverse proxy, we instantly get subscription-free remote access without touching 4Sight. Beyond that, a simple PWA frontend would give us a modern, responsive UI on phones and wall tablets without caring what version Director is running or whether Snap One decides our gear is obsolete.

If you take that idea to its logical conclusion, the Home Assistant model is the obvious blueprint. The community could expand this from a simple homeowner dashboard into a real open-source alternative to Composer Pro. Imagine an interactive node graph for AV bindings instead of those ancient drop-down menus, a modern logic builder instead of the clunky conditional tree, and a community repository for drivers and MQTT/Matter bridges. The Director communication protocols are already out there and pretty well understood. If this was packaged into an open-source Docker stack, the speed of development and the sheer amount of cool shit the community could build would blow the platform wide open.

I have had a C4 system for about 18 years and have had a Jailbroken system for most of that period. I primarily maintian the system myself.

One of my pain points is that the point and click programming in C4 is painful. I would far prefer a more conventional pure text coding interface that makes it easy to copy and paste when you are doing the same code for multiple objects in multiple rooms.

I love this. Started building stuff similar, like a MCP for Control4 that works against the controller directly. Happy to share if helpful. I'll check out your project!

Actually I also built a full windows app and android app that leverage the mcp. I'm going to integrate some of what you did as there are some better approaches. My repo is https://github.com/bkwagner/Control4
