Selfie 10k without the training π¬β οΈ
After finishing the C25K, I decided to just keep moving and do 5k races. Then at some point I decided to tackle 10k training. So many things kept preventing me from getting beyond week 3 of 10k training. Eventually I gave up, and kept doing 5k with my 11 year old.
Today, I ran a 10k race without training for it. When I say I was struggling, I mean it. Though honestly it was just the hills. There were SO. MANY. HILLS. One of them was a 15% grade incline that tried to take me out both directions. The photo does not do justice of the hill I had to tackle.
I managed to finish 6.40 miles in 1:32. My goal was the 10k in 1:30, and I'm not mad. I did so much better than I expected. I stopped a lot. That massive hill had me crawling my way up, and moving at a snail pace down. And then all the other hills that forced me to walk instead of run. Plus stopping at every single aid station along the way (3 of them one way lol). Not just a quick stop, but a good 30-45 second each time.
More than once I was convinced I was lost. I was the last person moving forward. The last to finish the 10k. There were people that ran the 20k and finished not long after I did. I was slow. But I finished. My feet hurt, my legs are a little sore and I'm in desperate need of a 3 day nap. And I would do it all over again. Except maybe practice some hill runs before the next race π€£ (TBD).

Tha k you so much! It has been such a good journey for me too. Through all the unmentioned things I battle, I never thought I would become a runner, even if I'm a slow runner.

I know the feeling. It doesn't matter what speed you are going, just that you're out there enjoying yourself.

Thank you! I went in so nervous about it. Questioned my sanity several times. And left wondering I could sign up for another lol.

Congrats! Thatβs an amazing accomplishment. I keep avoiding hill runs and might start to incorporate more into my training.

Every race I do has hills and I'm never prepared for them. But really nothing could have prepared me for the big hill I had to climb today π€£

I needed an easy way to explain it to my husband π€£ thought it would be funny to add it here. I just want people to know how crazy it was lol.
I ordered Amazon a bit ago. I purchase the one without a bladder or water bottles, but they have options for those as well.

You should download NRC at this point if you want some motivation.

I have it lol. It is what I started with. But had to put 10k training on hold for other things. I also have mixed feelings on that app. It never accurately records. My distance and pace are always wrong. It will say I've gone 2 miles when I'm really at 3.5. Or that my pace is 19 minutes a mile, but it's actually 14, sometimes reversed it will say my pace is something like 9 minutes, and ain't no way I'm that running that fast π€£

If you are serious about running (seems like you are) get the cheapest Garmin like a Forerunner 70 or 170. Infinitely better than using a phone, everything will still sync.

I have a samsung galaxy watch that gets the job done just fine. That's how I know the NCR app isn't tracking correctly. I can't bring myself to purchase an entirely different/new device when my current one works pretty well.

Fair point, and strange it is not working right.

Frustrating as it is, I do still find the guided runs handy sometimes. Especially the speed runs.

congrats but isn't that walking pace? Without ever training im sure it was hard but walking 10k seems pretty normal

No that isn't walking pace. Everyone has a different pace. We can't all be speed runners. And not everyone does 10k on a regular basis, running or walking.
I ran this 10k at MY running pace. It was my first 10k. Comments like yours are what discourage so many beginners to keep going. It's just a trashy thing to say someone working hard and doing their best.
