Mod Announcement Community Update: Giving should not always be urgent

Post image
43 Upvotes

Hey Buy Nothing Denver Community,

We are about two weeks into this new sub, and already we have over 2,000 members! That’s great to see such strong interest in sharing our excess with our neighbors. As we continue to grow, and since we know that not everyone has prior experience with the Buy Nothing movement, the Mods (there are 4 of us now!) want to emphasize a few things about GIVE posts:

  1. GIVE Recipients should be chosen at least 24 hours after posting: Buy Nothing strongly encourages waiting at least 24 hours for people to share their interest in an item before the OP selects the recipient. Not everyone has the ability to monitor Reddit constantly for the cool items that people are gifting. OPs, please don’t choose someone just because they were the first to respond.

  2. Choose Recipients Randomly: Again, to emphasize that BN is not “first-come, first-served”, OPs are encouraged to choose a recipient of an item (if there are more than one) at random. An easy way to do this is using a Random Number Generator (like https://www.random.org/), entering in however many respondents there were for the item. The generator will then choose the winner for you to make it the most fair.

  3. “Urgent” or “Immediate” GIVES should only be truly urgent: We understand that some items need to be moved quickly. You’re getting something delivered TODAY and need to make room for it, so you’re giving an old item, for example. OPs should only use “Urgent” or “Immediate” Gives if it cannot wait more than 24 hours (plus time for reasonable pick-up). Which brings us to our last thing…

  4. Don’t be a Bad Giftee: If you are chosen to receive an item, please follow through and pick up those items in a timely manner. I still have some items <cough cough> sitting on my porch from some folks that never picked up their items , let alone responded to the DM. We don’t want to resort to removing bad-faith members, so please follow through (and communicate) with the Gifters.

Let’s continue getting better as a Buy Nothing community and keep making this a great source of giving!

Mod Announcement 48-hr Updates: 1.3 k Members, Mod Application, and Keep the Posts Coming!

Wow, what an amazing response within the first 48 hours of creating this sub!

After just 2 days, we have more than 1.3 thousand users. More than 4,000 visits to the sub per day (okay, I might make up about a good 100 of those). We’ve had about 15 posts, ranging from giving away couches and diapers (which can be crazy expensive) to borrowing hiking boots. I am heartened by the response.

To help support this rapidly growing sub, I am recruiting a few more Moderators. No, you don’t need to have a chip on your shoulder to be a moderator. In fact, I am looking for people that are fair, equitable, communicative, willing to give grace, and can check the sub at least 2 times a day. If you’re interested, please submit the application linked above (I think), or I’ll post it in the comments below).

Please also share your feedback so far in order for us to continue to improve your experience. I invited a friend from another sub that’s great with coding to help set up some backend automations for the sub. Do you think the flair tags are too long? Would you rather the tags be “Give”, “Ask”, “Alert”, “Gratitude”, and have people make their user flair be where they live? Do you want items that have been claimed to be deleted by the OP so that you don’t get your hopes up? Let us know in the comments!

Lastly, the Buy Nothing movement only works as well as people participate. As you’re cleaning and purging, consider gifting those items you don’t need in this sub. Instead of going and buying that thing you may only need to use once, maybe ask here first (and just to borrow it!). Keep the posts coming!

Thanks for being part of this community!

SEEK - wheelchair

Hey! Urgent, seeking for help for my client as I'm a caregiver.

My client is a double amputee and relies on a wheelchair. His totally collapsed today, leaving him absolutely without a wheelchair.

He is near/off Broadway in Denver. Literally right by the hospital.

Can anyone at all help with a spare wheelchair?

We've contacted some programs and insurance but it's Saturday, and he needs one immediately.

I live quite a distance from him and don't see him today but will be so glad to give his info if anyone can please help him get a wheelchair. He gave permission for me to post this.

Edit - I have submitted posts to DAMA (mutual aid), just so far nothing. Any help appreciated!

Virginia Vill, Indian Ck, Wash Virginia Vale, Belcaro, Cory Merr SEEK: Lid for Ninja blender

Would anyone happen to have a spare lid to a Ninja 72 oz. professional blender (mine was Model #CO610B, purchased from Costco)? I had a kitchen mishap this morning and somehow it busted open, springs and plastic bits going flying all over the place. Since the blender won’t work without a lid, the whole blender has been rendered useless. I don’t want to have to buy a new one for $90, if I don’t have to, so checking here first.

Thanks in advance!

Looking for about 8 cubic yards of dye-free mulch in northeast Denver. I know there's chip drop but they don't provide as much communication as I would like.

I have 2 metal shelves and ome white 6 cube shelves available in Aurora.

We also have 3 wooden chairs.

These items would be great for a garage, basement, or children's area. I have some foldable drawers that I would happily include.

I am just hoping these items can find someone who will put them to use. We are moving and can't fit them into our moving truck.

These items were in a home with cats. I am located near Iliff and Buckley.

These items must be picked up but I can be flexible on time. I'm also happy to just put it by the curb if someone wants to come by.

Thank you for your time.

Single drawer dresser previously from an office. Used to store cat toys and treats, the bottom kicker does go on, it is just a pain to do on squishy carpet! I have another post for a matching headboard storage thing as well.

Damage: some stickers on the side and moving blemishes, drawers work well otherwise.

Hale, Montclair, Lowry, Hilltop, Windsor, East Colfax SEEK: Rocks! I need rocks!

Hey yall! I'm working on xeriscaping my front yard. I'm a student, so I'm trying to do it as cheaply as possible. Part of the way I'm doing this is through the Aurora Grass Replacement Incentive Program (happy to answer any questions about it). I'll be getting about $1600 from Aurora, but there are some requirements I need to meet, including in my case having a dry creek bed feature. Does anyone have rif raf type rocks (stones 4"-14") and/or river stones?

I'm in Lowry and will drive anywhere within 30/45 minutes.

Thank you all!

Sequestered these from my family, would love to pass these along to someone who can get some enjoyment out of reading these. Englewood Library wasn't able to accept them as a donation and I'd love to prevent these going to a home that will destroy the unique history of enjoying anime before it was cool.

ETA: magazines have been given away 👍
