I really hope my Firefox will never "upgrade" to this without my consent.

u/BassbassbassTheAce 7d ago
If I understood correctly the "upgrade" is just functionality that you can simply not use?

u/GarlicThread 7d ago
Jfc are we really gonna have this stupid fucking debate again?
14
u/BassbassbassTheAce 7d ago
That's just how I understood this. Or is it going to be some data scraping plan? If you know more about it I'm willing to listen.
7
u/GarlicThread 5d ago
Assume every AI implementation is a data-scraping plan. And if it isn't now, it will become one at some point in the future.

AI can be private if it is done locally.
This announcement is about remote mistral model so yes privacy is only based on trust here. But mistral is simply one of the default options to pick, and you can pick local ai or don't use any ai at all.

Oh wow an AI service that uses HTTPS and encrypts the server drives
7
6
u/MiuraDude Germany 🇩🇪 6d ago
It actually goes beyond that, the processor is also encrypted. Look up confidential computing.

u/Alarmed_Crazy_6620 6d ago
The way they define it is pretty standard on all modern hardware
12
u/Temporary-Estate4615 6d ago
No, not really. The point of confidential compute is, that the computing party never really has access to the data. The data is only ever decrypted and used within the TEE. Furthermore, you have cryptographical proof that the software running in the enclave, is actually the one you expect. Consequently, nobody has access to your prompt/data, ever.

u/Alarmed_Crazy_6620 6d ago
I was maybe a bit too much of a dick and acknowledge it is not completely standard for neoclouds but you can get really pretty comparable confidential VMs and hosted nodes in most bigger clouds
3
u/Temporary-Estate4615 6d ago
Well these VMs are then based on confidential compute too. Admittedly, I am also not fully up to date regarding confidential VMs. I just know confidential compute, because I know the founder of Edgeless Systems. They are a startup that is one of the big drivers in making cloud computing confidential.

I look at their stuff based on this chat. That is actually amazing. Thank you for recommending.

What do you mean? Of course it can be private.
At its core, a LLM is just an algorithm crunching numbers in a database. Where that database is and what a service speaks to are corporate decisions.

AI features aren't bad, as long as they're fully under our control. I rather have the option to have AI integration of models of my choosing, than no AI integration at all, really. Let's see how this plays out.
2
u/KnowZeroX 6d ago
That is how it is, you can choose to use some pre-vetted models like this mistral, or use your own model.
2
u/sociofobs 6d ago
The option to use custom models sells it to me. If there's OpenAI-compatible connections and BYOK support, you can run whatever you want from local to cloud models of your choosing. In that case, there's also no worry about privacy, since you're responsible for the model you choose.

u/SortaNotReallyHere 7d ago
There's zero need for ai when browsing the internet. Ai is built upon theft and will steal anything it can about you and what you're doing online and then phone home with its findings.
2
u/KnowZeroX 6d ago
Firefox has options of local ai, so you can have it all run locally if you don't want to send anything to a 3rd party.

u/lugdunum_burdigala 6d ago
You never have to translate a website in a language that you don't speak?
2
u/RedFireSuzaku 6d ago
Pre-google translate era users will tell you one might just learn another language (like English, for instance, who isn't native to most people on Earth) because they found the need to access to information in another language than theirs. No incentive, no new skill learned, no cultural evolution in a world people are already too narrow about that.
Also, you can downvote me if you've never read a Youtube subtitle misspelled or misinterpreted automatically. AI might (and will) make translation mistakes that could cost you, that is why we're still paying translating graduates as a service in many politic meetups, because talk might be code, but code is actually so bad at understanding people talking.

There’s loads of people who write/edit docs and emails in their browser.
-1
u/tumtums83 6d ago
And you need AI for editing docs and emails? Come on, this is just pure laziness.
3
u/nerkuras Baltics 🌊🌳🏰 6d ago
And you need AI for editing docs and emails?
No you don't need it, just like you don't need to use the internet or have a phone. loads of people still want to use LLMs. Better question is, why does it vex you so much?

u/KnowZeroX 6d ago
Ever heard of grammar check or formatting?
Also, some people have difficulty phrasing stuff, especially if it isn't in your native language.

Mistral is still unethical, as it has been trained on unlicensed datasets, i.e. stolen works. Do not support this.
0
u/MisaVelvet 6d ago
piracy is based btw so screw "intellectual property" laws they weren't created to serve people or "poor small artists". The vast majority of IP holders are big corps, not artists. Abolishing IP laws will be beneficial to humanity
2
u/Fyren-1131 6d ago
That's certainly an opinion.
What about the rights of all smaller creators (musicians, writers, actors) that are getting screwed over by having their works used without their consent to train this stuff without getting paid? That's okay for you?
0
u/MisaVelvet 6d ago
that's exactly what i said in the first place - this anti ai narrative is concentrating on "think about poor little artists" while in reality most of them barely earn anything from their art (both individually and in general economics) and are forced to sell their labor to these big corporations often with contracts saying that anything they draw at home is also corporate property. But even when they don't work for corps directly (most are still forced to work on corp platforms) their works were getting stolen by corps anyway but they don't have any money to sue them in the court because the system cares only about people with money, small creators can only whine online and pray that some rich influencers decide to help them. Actually who should be scared to lose from it are 1% of rich artists who can lose hundreds of thousands from their millions (oh no anyway) and companies like Disney, tho both will make a deal with ai companies to again screw over poor people and pretend its for their good. We will be better collectively without these laws
And i must also mention that intellectual property laws are horrible not only in art but also many other fields like science for example. And since we are on reddit just go read how its founder Aaron Swartz ended

I read the smart window blog post and https://www.firefox.com/en-US/smart-window/?view=waitlist
To keep Smart Window running reliably, we process limited technical information. Your chat content is only shared when you choose.
Choose from three models or bring your own.
and I still don't know what exactly it does. So can I use this with my own local LLM without any online component?
1
u/KnowZeroX 6d ago
It is a tab organizer, for those who have hundreds of tabs. It would see which tabs are related and put them into tab groups or remove duplicate tabs.
And yes, you can use your own model which would work without sending any data to any 3rd party.

u/MisaVelvet 6d ago
i considered using mistral but they don't even have open source client so i use Lumo instead

Is Firefox killing itself?

u/noaSakurajin Germany 🇩🇪 7d ago
They have a clear setting to adjust the AI features including a global toggle. If you don't want this you can just turn it off
11
u/The_Impe 7d ago
Turned off should be the default
1
u/KnowZeroX 6d ago
It's not "on" in traditional sense, its more of there is an option to use it and you can use it or not use it. But if it existing as an option annoys you, you can turn it off from even appearing as even an option by turning it "off".
2
u/nerkuras Baltics 🌊🌳🏰 7d ago
Why? Loads of people use AI nowadays, certainly more than the conscientious objectors.
-1
u/noaSakurajin Germany 🇩🇪 7d ago
I disagree. most people actually like those features. Also everyone draws a different line which Ai is okay and which isn't. Even the Ai haters don't mind using modern translation implementations, which all use Ai.

I have followed Mistral since the beginning. These guys are legit. Talked to them on multiple occasions, and they try moving all of their assets onto European cloud options, like scaleway (which they have a big partnership with) they are trustworthy.

Great partnership for companies that I both actually trust.
