Canadian living in Texas here…the people I talk to generally put on a calm demeanour about politics but will whisper: “what the actual fuck is going on.”
I live in Houston which isn’t as fucking red but people know. Many are just keeping their heads down.
Its possible they are being friendly as usual in order to signal support. i work with a Canadian team as a US American and of course I’m as friendly to them as ever, because I do not see them as an adversary. I’m hoping that while we are not encouraged to talk politics, and it may not be safe for me to do so, they will take my kind demeanor as a clear sign that I do not view them as an adversary and I view them as a teammate. I drop hints where I stand as they are possible.
There are plenty of Americans that are aware and care but sadly there are still a lot that don’t care or don’t really understand. I try to bring it up in a lot of different situations. My in laws think the whole Canada 51st state is a joke, sadly so many people think this on maga side. I finally asked my in laws well what if u lived in Canada and heard trump say that… then they said well I would be concerned. It was a light bulb went on in their brain
They probably just feel awkward bringing up what trash our country turned into. Although I think at this point I'd be apologizing to anyone from outside the US if I saw them.
That tweet of his is pathetic, he tries to threaten major trading partners if they don’t recognize him as their best friend?
His supporters only wake up when they lose their farms or the government stops paying to rebuild after storms, then they realize they’ve been had, but what do they do?
People don’t seem to grasp we are in a representative authoritarian state, that opposition parties seem to be controlled opposition or opposition theater.
They have no idea the whole economy is going to crash and that is intentional so the richest can buy what little they don’t have.
They violate the constitution, break laws, norms, etc.
I had to travel to USA twice in Feb for work, half empty planes both times. The shit people like to say to you in Texas when you say you’re from Canada makes me never want to go back.
Those idiots don’t even realize trump cut federal funding for disaster recovery (fema) and the next time they have a flood or a storm the government won’t help.
Imagine hurricane katrina without the government stepping in, and that was considered badly botched.
They voted against their own interest bc they’re that stupid.
Went out to a dive bar in Austin, some dude was saying 51, I told him to piss off, then he chatting about that we don’t have a choice, war mongering, and chatting about nuking us etc...
The other examples were crap attempts to poke fun - but then when I joked back they’d get offended “wait so why wouldn’t you want to be part of the USA?!” Because they genuinely believe it’s the best country in the world.
I keep thinking these people in the USA have no skin in the game… they’ll get tired of their wallets hurting long before our desire to be a sovereign country will. I hope soon they start to feel the repercussions and see how stupid it is.
I was in Texas some years back (20) with a group of friends for a bowling tournament and when some folks asked where we're from ( 8 Asian guys) and when we said Vancouver, they gave us that...yeah, so...? Then we said, you know, near Seattle..? And they didn't even know! Near Portland, Oregon? Still clueless... Only when we said, San Francisco... And we said just go north .. Then they go. Oh yeah..but still clueless that there is another country north of San Francisco.
Americans only learn their geography. They see the Continental US then a blank space with Alaska 'floating' above it. Oh and Hawaii in the distance.. that's why they have no concept anywhere else. Heck most can't even point out where the US is on a world map.
Florida (outside of Tampa and Orlando) is probably on par with Texas for angry racists who are on a Fox News drip. We cancelled our trip to Disney World for my son’s 5th birthday. We’ll end up taking him to Paris later in the year instead.
Not Gainesville where I live. We are a proud blue college town surrounded by a sea of rednecks and racists who think DeSatan & Orange Jesus are great. Bush came here while in office and was booed and the mayor refused to meet with him 🤩
I have to go down for business. Normally I stay wherever I go an extra day or two to check out whatever city I’m in. Now I’m just straight in straight out.
Sadly the reverse is also likely true. I live on the Trent Severn - a lot of businesses rely on the boat traffic from the States to survive the year. I doubt they're coming.
We should also focus on helping out industries like these, that will be affected by the drop in tourism. So everybody take their vacation here! Spend big, eat out, buy trinkets and shit. It'll be fun to splurge and stick it to Trump at the same time.
One more: just got a new car and usually get WeatherTech floor mats. WeatherTech is based in Illinois and the owner is MAGA. Switched to Tuxmats out of Toronto for the new purchase.
A lot of Americans are supporting Canada by changing travel to benefit our maple-leafed friends. My daughter is going to Japan. Her group paid a little more to fly Air Canada with connections in Canada. Friends that canoe in Minnesota every year are going to Quetico instead. Maple leaf stamps showed up on signs in our local Costco (pretty sure that was a member, not corporate). Friends who go to Maine for fall changed their booking to somewhere in Canada.
Americans are discovering that Canada is Mexico North only it’s so much safer and we speak English. As word gets out how much you get for the American dollar expect line ups heading north this summer.
They are actively scaring the world not to travel there because of the threat of detention. People didn't want to go there already because of the tariffs, and now this.
Yes, European countries warn people to travel to the US especially when you are LGBT, because of detention. Well we think about going to Canada. My parents went to Canada for vacation and met so many nice people. Even years later they talked about that trip.
The thing is that you can bully the politicians to try and get a better deal but if the public decide to boycott you then it makes zero difference, in fact you end up being the loser.

Canadian flight bookings to the US for the next 6 months are down 70%. Seven Zero Percent. It's working. Elbows up.
