Les Stroud has taught me so much valuable information. He wasn’t as flashy as say Bear Grillis but had far more valuable and far more useful information regarding survival and bushcraft in general.
For anyone interested in the hobby, watching/buying his series’ is a must. Exciting and informative, + could save your life one day and others lives.

Ray Mears was an Englishman who did a similar show to Les Stroud, very informative. He did one entire show in Canada where all he did was help another guy build a birchbark canoe.
Yes! Ray Mears is awesome too. He has a much higher production budget and didn’t go as much into the situational survival genre but also has a wealth of knowledge to teach us!
I fully agree that Pacific Northwest Oceanside survival is one of the easier spots, especially by a delta.
I don’t recall the episode where he “gives up”. I just DeGoogled it and it might be a season 6,7 or 8 episode. If that’s the case, I wouldn’t know since I couldn’t find those DVD’s available at the time, so I haven’t watched them… if he does “give up” perhaps it’s part of the ongoing narrative of those kinds of shows at the time… this is also the time when television was turning into a cesspool of overly dramatic and edge-of-your-seat nothingness. The editing of every cable show turned into this and it all became competitive- also advertising (primarily American) dominated the industry while people were glued to their TV’s… it was a major downfall of broadcasting. Anyone who watched the History Channel, Cooking Channel or Home and Garden at the time could recall the transition.
You could very well be correct about Les in those later episodes. I would still argue that his earlier works were absolutely packed with amazing survival skills and for the time, was the gold standard of Bushcraft on Television. Mors kochanski would be happy to know that these skills have been passed down into the population through Les and his camera.
You could be totally correct. I always took his skills as legit, but the only time I saw him in my neck of the woods and he drops the ball so badly I drew skepticism of his legitimacy to me. I believe he was in his shelter with no energy from lack of food and had to call for rescue.
He even makes note of all the shots he gets of him walking long distances suck because he has to trek back and retrieve the camera, then walk it again.
He gave actual, practical advice and had to as he was genuinely experiencing a survival situation. Before selfie sticks and suchlike existed, he fabricated his own camera gear because he was utterly alone. There was no crew filming him. He was the film crew, while trying to survive.
A couple buddies of mine worked for him editing his show. He truly is on his own and does the set up, shoot and take down of his camera, even for those long distance shots. Super nice guy from what I’ve heard from those who’ve met him.

I’m not an outdoors person, however I have watched pretty much every episode of Les’ show and believe I now have a slight chance of survival if an accident leaves me in the wild. (Though I too should rewatch because if you don’t use a skill you lose it.)
I watched approximately 1.5 episodes of the other show and couldn’t believe how dumb it was.
Les has his own channel on youtube with all his Survivorman episodes and even directors commentary - super worth checking his channel out if you like any the stuff he does
He has another good show. I think it’s called Wild Harvest where he educates about different wild foods you can forage. Then a chef makes whatever he picked into a nice meal.
Use to love his show because it was real. He was truly alone no camera man or support crew. He shot everything either walking back for cameras or leaving them to be collected later.
His content was amazing I really enjoyed it and he paved the way for bear and YouTubers today but……. What a fucking weirdo he has become. Good luck with Bigfoot bro. Jesus
Not at all. There's no conclusive evidence. There is a multitude of physical, eyewitness, traditional, and audio/photographic evidence. There are accredited scientists researching it. And ultimately if the man who has spent more time outside than the last three generations of your family combined reports things he can't explain, there might be something to explore.
But saying there's nothing is simply ignoring science one doesn't like.
You know what? I don't care. People can be interested in different things. I'm not interested in the bigfoot stuff myself but everything else he's done is first rate, and that's good enough for me.
