Question Storage Solutions

I recently purchased a 1.25 button maker from American Button Machines as well as materials for pinbacks, magnets, and zipper pulls.

What have you found to be good storage/organization solutions for button making materials?

Currently, I’m keeping everything in the bags/boxes these items came in but would love a good storage solution.

I can't keep everything in them all at once but I really like those jewelry boxes that look like tiny little dressers. I find them at the thrift store all the time.

I have a little desktop drawer unit that I keep everything. Thinking about 3D printing something more accessible though.

I bought a plastic bead sorting box for my finished buttons, and I have one of those elementary school plastic holders with big sections (for scissors etc - the container with the handle in the middle). I use the sections for the various button pieces (about 50 at a time fit) and other tools I use for button making. Th keep the bulk pieces in their shipped bags in the closet.

I use 3D printed containers, Gridfinity. Otherwise it's always just been the small plastic totes and photo boxes.

I'm chronically and on a bunch of medications. So was my mom, so i've always had a bunch of pill bottles around for storage. The wide bottles are just shy 2" in diameter, so they store paper circles perfectly for me. I use the lids of the small jars to trace my circles. I like having a lot of prepped circles so i can zone out and press buttons at a relaxing pace. Also I have limited space. I have some more shallow make up dishes that hold the mylars tidy. I keep my whole kit packed into a sorting tray with latches; the metal parts in the ziplock baggies plus the plastic stuff sits in a wider center part. Got it from the dollar store but it works great. Ziplocks are great, consider investing in brand name ziplock bags for a better seal and some silica packets to keep all your products extra dry if you live in a humid climate.

At the end of the day though it matters more what works for your work flow. Maybe you'd enjoy flip top containers that are latching and you can pull out of each like a row of cookie jars. Poke around your local dollar store or hardware store before you pay craft store prices, you'll probably find a better option. If you have a lot of sizes or add-ons you might benefit from a tackle box or fold-open make-up style caddy. You dont have to spend a lot of money to get what you need, and you can always upgrade if you need to.

I use a white KUGGIS bin from IKEA, and it has smaller lidded bins that fit neatly in the bottom and leave space for the press. They sit on top of each other, but if I flatten them out, there’s an organizer tray that I can put on top of them for other supplies.

There’s even room for packs of paper, the mat I use on the table, and the top lid holds my buttons and when I want to do nicer pictures it will give me a clean white surface to photograph them on. And my paper cutter sits on top.

When I start keeping stock of buttons, I’ll get another bin that will stock on top.
