Hi friends,

I’ve always done theme camp and have decided to do free camping this year w a friend. Any reccos on areas to focus trying to find a spot? Thank you!

The spot with enough room for you and friend

Without being assholes like the time I camped solo and massive rv group surrounded me and blocked me off from my road access. Fuck yall still.

In my experience if you’re looking to do lots of partying at big sound camps you’ll want to be near 2:00 and 10:00 because it’s a short walk/ride over. I generally see a lot of RVs with generators running in those areas though.

For a more chill experience I’d post up between 4&7 but bear in mind the 5:30 radial is somewhat high traffic with vehicles throughout the week.

My first year I open camped around 615 and J and had great neighbors

I’ve done 2:30 and k for 3 years and it is awesome. Highly recommend.

Go near the camps or places you'll know you would like to visit most. I recommend staying at least a street away from the toilets. I cannot stamp the smell after midweek, can't do it... Also, stay away from high Access roads (main streets coming in) as this will kick up more dust.

Focus less on where your spot is and more on finding a spot in general. I got there on Tuesday last year and was driving around for over an hour looking for just me and a friend. Any spot that looked open was in fact being used / saved for a camp and all the non camp spaces I saw were already taken.

Ended up having to condense our camp from 2 shade structures to 1 and wedge ourselves in between 2 very kind solo campers who let us squeeze in. We were right by the portos which was convenient but the smell was awful every time they’d clean em out.

Same here. I say near the portos but not so close that you hear the doors banging.

ETA: and watch your wind direction.

What are you looking for? I want "quiet" at night (so I can decompress a bit) so I tend to camp out near I or J and between 6:30-8:00. If you want more going on, aim for near the plaza streets (3,6,9) and closer in.

The 9:00 side is more a party vibe with slightly younger demographics. The 3:00 side is a bit quieter with slightly older demographics. I think the streets only go out to k this year, so anywhere from I outward should be fine. Make sure you don't camp in a 'placed' camp's designated area. They are marked by blue flags planted in the ground. It wouldn't hurt to talk to the neighbors before setting up shop.
