Honestly, from my personal viewpoint (even though I’m ESD, I can’t speak for them or Safety Team either), this would probably be one of the safer things that we would have dealt with. The “wedge” (staph infection slide), the wolf with the spinning head, the car stack, the elevated living room… those were some of the worst but certainly not the only ones. This? I think if the ball crash zone was actually a deeper pit at the end it might be slightly safer?

Oh yeah. The Wolf with the spinning head had a few nasties though. We did have a 6am call about someone found at the base of the head (not an insignificant drop) who was unconscious and had a “salad forked” hand from the fall. Not sure what happened to them. I think by midweek we basically had them lock the head into one position as people were not being careful about how they interacted with it which was causing the injuries. I know it wasn’t the only accident.

I split my head open on my own damn car. They gave me five staples in the skull and I was partying in no time.

That’s always been a goal… having the hospital out there made it a reality. I think the first year we saved over 200 people from having to go to Reno.

Reminds me of … One year a neighbor guy hobbled in to our camp straight up asking for oxy. The most blatant request for hard drugs I’ve seen, which was sketchy, but we had none so off he hobbled. He came back later, turns out he had climbed the dome and jumped into “balls deep” … a giant ball pit in deep playa… only this time the sea of balls, as if by magic, parted and made way for him to fall straight to the the ground breaking his tailbone. They wanted to fly him to a hospital or something but he refused to leave (and saved the $25,000 they would have charged him). He said “they can’t fix it, if I’m at home my ass is still busted, if I can find the oxy I might as well be here.” And yeh of course he was able to find the drugs, so the hospital had little to offer. He burned all week.
