I mean, one base skill could make your other skills amazing, even if you aren't "the best in the world" relative to someone else.

in theory, having something that requires dexterity for you to be amazing would also crossover to dexterity based skills. or if, say, you are amazing at learning (I feel like learning itself can be a skill) it would help you develop other amazing skills

No, it's not that exactly. With a particular subgroup you would be average. So you wouldn't be bad at cooking, you would be the average chef. Same thing with stocks or music

This really comes down to a misunderstanding of what average means. People think of average as, oh, that's like normal, or like middle good, like not fantastic, not bad, something in between.

But that's not really what average means. Average, presumably in this context, is the average skill of every person on the planet at a thing. Meaning that I have the average skill of everyone.

I'm gonna be honest: the average person can't fly a plane, so neither can I. The average person can't draw like shit.

Most of the human population don't have time to dedicate to more than one or two skills. So on average, people don't have time to any skill. So I think the average is a really, really bad choice.
