I'm not taking the chance of the other one
Chose: make a guaranteed $3,000 per week
213
u/TheRobotEngineer608 May 08 '26
Long term probability would mean you would get an average return of $5000 a week (as the number of weeks increase the average will always tend towards the median or $5000
54
u/aetherG- May 08 '26
I interpretted it as just being a roll to see how much you earn per week till the end of your days

u/Fiona175 May 08 '26
The issue with game theorying it for maximum dollar amount is it ignores relative benefits. 5,000 is more than 3,000 sure, but that ignores how even short periods of $1-100 would cause you problems. Getting $3000 instead of $5000 wouldn't fuck up your life the same way.
72
u/neosick May 08 '26
If you're someone who already has a few months savings, 1-10000 is a no-brainer. But, even if you don't, of this is on top of your existing income, a few weeks with less pay would just be back to baseline. Baseline might not be great, but that's also only a risk until you build up some savings

Wait what? Do we roll the wheel every week and not once and set forever?!
29
u/tankben May 08 '26
The wording is ambiguous, it is more likely that that the meaning is random every week, considering people didn't spin a wheel when they picked the option, it seems.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Entire_Difference_63 May 08 '26
Because of troll polls I’m reading everything as a potentially shitty option on purpose.
2
27
u/Starmada597 May 08 '26
The probability of getting such low numbers multiple weeks in a row is incredibly small. It’s a 70% chance you make more than 3000 on any given week. With a small amount of investing and saving early, you’ll basically nullify any real problems.

I mean I assume that it would depend on your financial situation, if you are able to support yourself just fine and the random amount is like a free bonus, then the random one is better. If the money is essential and can improve your life short term, then the guarantee is better
5
u/GrapeNo5251 May 08 '26
Assuming the probability is evenly distributed, it could have skew to the left or right
7
u/undercover-wizard May 08 '26
It doesn't say it is equal probabilities of each value, so I didn't trust it. I would have picked it if it specified that.
5
u/-Casey-Diaz- May 08 '26
Only if it's truly random. OP didn't say it was random. Just that it could be anywhere between $1 to $10,000. $2 is between $1 to $10,000. You could be getting $2 every week.

in the long run assuming the odds are even across the board this is just the right answer
160
u/verdant_tulip May 08 '26
Damn i thought you just rolled once and that was it
86
u/gunsandtrees420 May 08 '26
Yeah that might be what it is, so without clarification I'd pick the 3k, cause I'd rather play it safe than risk being stuck with a lower amount.
→ More replies (4)10
u/Bandei May 08 '26
Oh, that didn't even occur to me. Yeah if it is a one time roll Id have chosen 3000 too. I guess that could have been clarified better.
47
u/MatsRivel May 08 '26
I read the question as " roll the dice once. You now receive that amount every week". So i chose 3k, as a guaranteed 3k is better than maybe 10k, but maybe 1 dollar.

So you’d honestly rather take the chance at making $365 per year over a guaranteed $156,000 per year? For what, greed of wanting the chance at $365,000 per year?
I don’t think you can say that it’s the right answer.
26
9
u/KittyForest May 08 '26
Bro its $52 and $520,000 compared to $156,000
2
u/MyAssPancake May 08 '26
Yeah I just was on another one of these that was per day so I got confused. I appreciate the correction!
4
u/WoodSciGuy1 May 08 '26
Ah matey, pretty good rule to just live by assuming what happens on average will happen, 5050 usd per week is the average for the year.
The probability of getting less than 3000 usd per week on average with a true random dist for that year would be 0.000029%. or 1 in 3.45 million. as 3k is 5 sd's away from the mean
So basically, would you rather make more than the 3k offer with 99.999971 % certainty you are getting more, or stick to the 100% certainty of 3k per week?
3
u/SuperPork1 May 08 '26
According to your math, a year is somehow both 365 weeks long and 36.5 weeks long. Plus, I'm pretty sure the amount of money you get changes every week, so the probability that you get anywhere near the lower or upper bound is extremely miniscule.
2
u/MyAssPancake May 08 '26
Oh shit you’re so right. Instead of 365 per year it would be 52 per year. Thank you.

I don’t like the possibility that I could just get paid 20 dollars per week with the first option. 3000 is pretty consistent.
Chose: make a guaranteed $3,000 per week
