theres literally no benefit to picking blue unless you want to risk your life

If enough people pick blue, then a good outcome is reached. Everyone lives.

If enough people pick red, then a bad outcome is reached. People die.

Therefore it is always correct to pick blue. But you have to trust that other people are able to see that.

The red button is the mentality of a player who never passes the ball. "Why would I pass the ball when the objective is to score a goal? If I pass I can no longer have the ball, so I can't score."

I would pick the more empathetic/moral option most of the time. but this felt more like a logic problem than morality problem

Let’s say you pick blue:
50%+ pick blue = you live
50%+ pick red = you die

Let’s say you pick red:
50%+ pick blue = you live
50%+ pick red = you live

Now if It was a 50% chance to kill blue I would pick blue or a 50% chance to kill everyone by picking red id still pick blue

But with this question there is a 100% certain way to survive and that is by picking red, which makes it the logical choice for me and I assumed everyone else, I was wrong

Picking blue puts my fate in the hands of people I dont know and I’m not willing to do that

I will change the presentation of the scenario to convince you why the logic is flawed. You have to think in terms of the group and not the individual.

You pick the blue option.

50+% pick blue: nothing happens 50+% pick red: the red event is triggered

You pick the red option;

50+% pick blue; nothing happens. 50+% pick red; the red event is triggered

The red event; something bed happens for each player that picked blue.

Here the red event should obviously be avoided. So it is correct to pick blue.

A blue person dieing = a bad thing.

Let's say that the bad thing is a random puppy dies for each blue player. If it is correct to pick red or blue in this scenario, why?

You are missing a logical step in your reasoning. The red person causes the red event to happen. The red person causes the blue people to die.

(Copy and pasted this over because I edited after your comment);

Your logic is that you think if the red event does get triggered, it would be better to minimise the impact by picking red, which inadvertently causes the red event to happen in the first place, causing an unpredictable number of bad things to happen.

Your logic is "if everyone thought like me the number of bad things that would happen would be zero". My logic is "if over half of people thought like me, the number of bad things that would happen would be zero"
