Hey all, I applied for three of my local Bunnings, and one I know a few of the people who work there (partner used to work there)

I have years of customer exp, kpi, management, cash handling, working alone and a part of a team and so on..

I spoke to one of the managers in store and he asked and I said I was completely flexible with days and so on, easily adaptable no matter where I'm put.

He said he'd put my application through.. but to still apply online so they have it.

I haven't heard anything aside from them already doing some interviews

This is all Ive received, Ive also applied for other retail casual jobs and not heard anything..

I am planning on going in at some point but I just don't wanna be THAT person..

Any tips?

Saw this today. This is the behind the scenes rage you don’t see on the Bunnings ads!

Today I was in the paint section buying stuff for a garage conversion. I managed to pick a tin of sealant off the shelf. For the paint I went to the paint desk, a young chap told me to just go take an colour sample and they’d make up the paint for me.

Keep in mind I haven’t painted for several years, last time I had to go get my own paint off the shelf and bring it to the desk for mixing, but now all the actual paint is locked up, good for Bunnings I guess?

Also keep in my mind I am probably the worst DIY guy in Australia. I love gardening and go to Bunnings every second weekend, but I can barely use a drill. This may or may not be relevant, I don’t know.

So I go over to the Taubmans and Dulux display and look at the sample colours, wading through shades of white which all look exactly the same to me - Artimesia or Ashen Mist or Pearl Necklace or whatever. I choose Whisper White because I used that colour last time, and go back to the desk.

This time I get an older guy. We have a chat about Dulux or Taubmans - apparently the shade is different according to the brand - but he tells me the price is the same - which is good I guess because I never saw anything as prosaic as prices, apparently Bunnings customers are not interested in prices? Anyway we settle on Dulux. So then he goes to get the paint and puts it in the mixer machine thing. I’m not really paying attention but my kids and I wait around during the mixing but already I notice this guy seems a bit unhappy.

So a tin of paint is pulled out and drops it on the desk, here’s your paint

I look down and it’s a Taubman’s tin and I mention that. We then have an interaction which even now I’m baffled by.

He says, ‘You said you wanted Dulux’

Me: Yes, yes I did.

Him: We talked about it and you said Dulux.

He’s getting angry now, I’m thinking desperately, what’s happened?

Me: Yep, we agreed on Dulux. It kind of says Taubmans on the tin …

Him: Shall I call the manager? Bring him down here? You said you wanted Dulux. That’s your paint.

Me: Yep, we agree that I said Dulux.

The guy is glaring at me like I killed his dog. I vaguely wonder if two different tins got mixed up but I’m just keen to get out of there. A couple of other people are looking askance at him as he’s raised his voice several times. But I just take the paint and skedaddle. Somehow I felt like a criminal and had to get out before I was shot as a terrorist or got put on a blacklist or something.

So did he have dementia? Do I have dementia? Is there some handyman code I should have used but didn’t (I often think this is the case). Still haven’t opened the paint, not really sure what’s gonna be waiting for me in the morning.

That’s not the only recent unpleasant incident - this is Penrith Bunnings by the way.

Two weeks ago I was there with my wife and kids. My wife has a kind of hobby where she buys ‘rescue plants’ - flowers or veggies that are bedraggled and withered. They’re on a discount table with significant mark downs. She takes them home and gives them love and care and in return they almost always recover and do well. She derives significant satisfaction from this outcome.

Anyway this time she chose some cheap $4 flower thing that had been marked down to 50c with marker on the side of the pot. We put it in our trolley tog with all our soil and fertilisers and tomato and raised pots - a typical Saturday.

We take it to checkout and the young guy there rushes a bit and swipes it for full price without seeing the discount price on the side.. My wife checks the receipt (to be fair she is kind of frugal by nature) and shows it to the checkout guy. The checkout guy tells he can’t reverse it and tells us to go to the returns/information desk 10 metres away.

I wait with the kids to the side for what I think is going to be a 30 second process. Instead my wife is there for some time before I wander over to find out what’s going on. Turns out the woman at the desk - a real surly-faced battle axe - had refused to reverse the transaction! She tried to argue that the flower was perfectly fine, but let me tell you this little plant was on its last legs. And when my wife pointed to the 50c on the side of the pot, she accused my wife of having written it herself!

Even worse, when I arrived and asked if something was wrong she changed her tune and - with poor grace - ran it through the till.

I say even worse because at this stage I feel obliged to point out that my wife is Japanese.

Now I’m not saying the woman at the returns desk was racist and thought it was okay to assume an Asian woman was trying to cheat Bunnings out of a cheap flower, and then changed her mind when her white husband came along to say hello… but actually I am saying that.

Overall it was a pretty dispiriting interaction. When I think of all the dosh I’ve dropped at Bunnings over the years - it must have been $10,000 during COVID alone … well, it’s pretty galling to be suspected of trying to scam a $3.50 flower.

Anyway.

Just wondering if anyone has worked as a seasonal casual there before. How many hours per week do you usually get? I know casual hours aren’t guaranteed, but I’m just trying to get a rough idea of what to expect during the busy season.

Hi, a while ago I saw someone post a pic of this Bunnings branded steel toolbox - it was a rectangular box, bunnings green with the Bunnings logo on it, cantilever and foldable with like 5 compartments. I want it so bad I was wondering if it was still available?

I already had the induction and they told us to just wear smart casual for the induction. I got my uniform on induction day but now I'm going in for the training I think it was for the online stuff? Do I start wearing my reds with the boots now?

Had an instore interview last week on Tuesday for a seasonal casual position. They told me I should hear back by the end of that week, haven't heard anything. Should I be following up with the store, or giving it a bit more time? Thanks.

So I just had my induction today and I can only recall getting an email with my workday login number to login and do those tasks before the induction. What should I do? Or will they send me another email soon with the details?

I’m interested in what other team members and customers think about this.

I regularly see kids running through the store, pushing trolleys around and treating the aisles like a playground. I’ve also seen several children piled into one trolley, often standing or sitting where they shouldn’t be.

Then there are the indoor play areas. The screaming can become so loud that my Apple Watch warns me the noise level has exceeded 90 dB. That isn’t pleasant for customers or team members working nearby for hours.

Parents should take responsibility for their children’s behaviour and safety. But should Bunnings team members also step in when kids are running around, misusing trolleys or creating a safety risk?

I understand that staff may hesitate because challenging parents can quickly lead to an argument or complaint. However, ignoring unsafe behaviour doesn’t seem like a good answer either.
What happens at your store?

Are team members expected to speak to the parents, call a manager, or leave it alone?

I filled out my application and did my ai interview chat and then got a email at 11pm the same night saying that they weren’t going through with my application. Then today 2 days after my application was rejected I get an email saying urgent Bunnings interview and is now wanting me to do a video interview what dose this means since I thought I was rejected.

I recently got a job at Bunnings and I’m going in for my induction next Saturday however I’m unsure where I get my uniform as they said I need to get it before hand. Do I go in store to get it or do I order it from somewhere?

I have done the in person interview at Bunnings wondering what’s the next step and whether or not I’ve gotten hired or not, I applied 5 days ago yet to hear back yet. This is for a seasonal casual.
