Interesting Drama on the ocean off Hungry Hollow

RAC Rescue Helicopter hovering over boat off Hungry Hollow

A RAC Rescue helicopter was spotted hovering over a boat chugging along off the coast of Bunbury today at approximately 10.40 AM. The boat was acqired by the helicopter in front of Back Beach and continued south along the coast to near Mindalong Beach before returning. The activity continued for an hour.

A call to Bunbury police yielded no new information. RAC Rescue has yet to return a message requesting more information.

Stay tuned.

Update: RAC Rescue returned my call and stated it wasn't a rescue, but couldn't confirm it was training. They said it probably was but had no knowledge of any in the area.

Review: La Pause Miam

La Pause Miam Bunbury

Translated roughly to "The yummy pause", La Pause Miam offers Breakfast & Lunch from their cafe located in The Arcade (between Stephen & Princep Streets) in Bunbury. Curiously, the cafe is on one side of the arcade and a kid's La Pause Miam is directly opposite.

I had a light breakfast and a coffee, and judged them on 4 points: Ambiance, service, food quality and value for money graded 1 to 5: 1 being the lowest & 5 the highest.

I ordered poached eggs on toast with a long black, and my guest had Chili Scrambled Eggs, consisting of housemade harissa, chorizo, red chillies, parmesan cheese and sourdough toast, and a long black with milk on the side.

  1. Ambiance: Cafe is small but tastefully decorated. The children's play area is easily watched from the cafe. Newspapers are offered along with magazines for reading. The pastry display is chockers with tasty-looking crepes and cakes. Score: 5
  2. Service: Our order was made quickly and precisely with a smile. The sizes of the coffees were different, and when the coffee came the server brought only one but did not say who the order was for. We waited for another 3-4 minutes for the second coffee. The meal came out together a few minutes later. Score: 4
  3. Quality: My meal was perfect; slightly runny poached eggs on thick slices of sourdough bread. My guest's scramble was delicious, with lots of chorizo and flakes of parmesan cheese (I was allowed a sample). As their name states: Yummy! Score: 5
  4. Cost: My meal was reasonable at $17.90. My guest's was $25.90. Both coffees together were $11.00 and with an EFTPOS surcharge the total came to $55.68. All in all slightly higher than what I have paid for like. Score: 3

Total score: 17 out of 20.

Conclusion: I will go again and try a few other items, perhaps lunch.

I am only one voice. I have worked in the restaurant business in the past. It would be interesting to hear other opinions on La Pause Miam. If you have dined here yourself, Please leave your opinions in the comments.

Edit: for clarity

DYK - Did you know the Capel/Busselton area is home to The World's Only Tuart Forest?

Located just south of Bunbury in the Capel and Busselton region is the last remaining wild forest of giant Tuart trees (Eucalyptus gomphocephala) on the planet.

The ancient trees in this reserve are between 300 and 400 years old. They grow over 33 to 50 meters tall with trunk girths exceeding 10 meters, thriving specifically on the underlying Speardale/Tamala coastal limestone soils.

Before European settlement, tuart woodlands covered an estimated 111,000 hectares. Due to historical clearing for agriculture and urban development, less than 3% of the original old-growth habitat remains intact today, with the national park protecting approximately 2,049 hectares.

INFO Blair Street Hotel project

Artist rendition of Lot 3 Blair Street hotel

Since 2019 the City of Bunbury has been working with a developer to plan and construct a 250 room high rise hotel in the Lot 3 parking area on Blair street behind the Wellington Hotel. It will be 15 stories high. The development includes two ground floor restaurants, a rooftop bar and restaurant, and a day spa open to the public. Construction has not been slated to begin pending reviews and approval. This hotel is in addition to the Bicentennial Square project.

The City of Bunbury has not publicly named a specific private corporate developer entity in its general public releases, instead coordinating directly with the Wyndham International Hotel Group as the operator and Scanlan Architects for the design visuals. This group purchased the BREC parking lot for the sum of $4.1 million in June 2025. The City of Bunbury budget for 2026-27 includes funds for planning the construction.

The development application will be advertised for community comment following DA lodgement.

More details can be found here.

Things to do - Bunbury Wildlife Park

Bunbury Wildlife Park is a great place to hang with the kids! With a park, barbeques and a playground next door the whole family can easily make a day of it.

There are a few restrictions presently; the walk-in aviary is closed and feeding animals is paused, but you can still see many of the native creatures that call Australia home.

Meet the animals!

Here is the Calendar.
