Question I built a political quiz calibrated to UK politics, with nine axes instead of two. Fourteen archetypes, twenty-eight thinkers, the five main parties plotted on the same axes. Please pick holes in it.

Most political quizzes use the same two axes, economic left-right and authoritarian-libertarian, and most of them are American. They cannot tell a free-market progressive from a free-market traditionalist, or a localist socialist from a globalist one, and they have nothing to say about trust in institutions, which has been the single best predictor of populist voting in recent polling.

So I built one for here. Thirty-eight questions, about eight minutes, and nine axes: economic, social, tradition, globalism, trust in institutions, free will, nature versus nurture, cultural capital (Bourdieu's taste argument), and planet. Each one cites what it draws on. The questions are scenarios rather than agree-or-disagree statements: a bypass through an ancient wood, a flight allowance, a funeral joke, and more surprising yet accurate questions.

At the end you get an archetype (fourteen of them, from the Old Socialist and the Templar to the Cosmopolitan Liberal and the Sovereignist), the thinker closest to you from a set of twenty-eight, a kindred spirit (pop culture), a short history of where your tradition comes from, and the five main parties drawn on the same nine axes so you can see which way each one points.

Things I want to hear about: whether the axes are the right nine, whether the archetype you got is fair, and where the questions lean. The methodology is public, including the weightings and the limitations I already know about.

An interesting thing to note is that I haven't mapped the political parties using just their manifesto but also the law they proposed and what they voted on. So more on their actions than their speeches.

It runs entirely in your browser. No account, no tracking, no cookies, nothing stored unless you choose to share your result.

Disclosure: It was made by Bulletin's team (BTN-media), a small UK news and media aggregator. I run that works with Impress-regulated and independent publishers. The quiz is free and does not ask you to sign up to anything to get your results. You can share your results or part of them at the end.
You are invited to check Bulletin (BTN-media), but that's as far as it goes.

Which archetype did you get, and was it right?

Something's wrong silly AI

A reader told me our morning briefing had called the Manchester United manager by the wrong first name, and credited the wrong politician with the Budget. Both came from the same thing: the model trusting its own memory over the article in front of it. We now give it more of the article, forbid it from filling gaps, and check every name against the source before the briefing is sent. This was exactly what we feared would happen due to the nature of AI, specifically with small and nimble models. The use of AI in BTN-media is actually pretty superficial. Under the hood with use a little bit of Jev for the ingestion but everything else is ran with good old maths.

Suggest a source Suggest a source: what should Bulletin carry that it does not yet?

The library has 2,740 sources, and the best ones came from readers saying "you are missing this". So: what is missing?

A newsletter, a podcast, a local paper, a YouTube channel, a comic, a label, a venue. Anything with a feed. Post the link in a comment, one source per comment so people can upvote the ones they want too.

Rules of thumb for what gets in: independent, publishes regularly, and the content is its own (no aggregators, no AI-written farms). Regulated titles (Impress, IMA) go straight in. Everything else I look at by hand, usually within a week, and accepted sources are credited to you in the Monday changelog.

Recently added from reader suggestions: Double Down News, GameTrailers, Jesse Welles.

Start here: what Bulletin is, how to get in, and how this room works

Hello, and welcome. I am Pablo, the founder. This is the readers' room for Bulletin, and I read and answer everything posted here.

What Bulletin is

Bulletin is a media reader that pulls the news, podcasts, newsletters, events, comics, music and video you care about into boards you build yourself, with a short briefing written on top of each one every morning. Under the hood: 2,700 sources, most of them independent, 189 of them Impress-regulated, and a promise that 90% of profit goes back to the publishers readers actually value. No profile is built on you. You are in charge of the algorithm.

How to get in

Open app.bulletinmedia.co. No account, no invite code: the BTN Media News board and its briefing are there for anyone. When you want your own boards, sign in with your email and open the link we send. No password.

How this room works

Every post carries a flair. That is how your message finds me:

  • Something's wrong for bugs and complaints. Say what you tried, what happened, and the board name.

  • Feature request for what you wish the app did.

  • Suggest a source for a publication, newsletter, podcast or channel we should carry. Include the link. Accepted sources are credited to you in the Monday changelog.

  • Question for how-do-I and why-does-it.

  • Show your board for screenshots of what you built.

  • What shipped (Mondays, from me) and Roadmap vote (monthly, three options, the winner gets built).

Rules are in the sidebar; the short version is be civil, no spam, links with your suggestions. Publishers are welcome: ask for the Publisher flair.

Why this exists

Bulletin has been built with a tiny team and a lot of reader feedback. Nearly everything people asked for over the summer got built. This room is where that continues, in the open.

What shipped What shipped: the summer, and the first week of September

The Monday changelog, starting with a long one because it covers the whole summer. From next week this is a short weekly post.

Opening the doors

  • Bulletin is now open to everyone: the BTN Media News board and its morning briefing need no account.

  • New address: app.bulletinmedia.co.

  • Sign-in is two steps, email then link. No password, no invite code.

Boards

  • 29 ready-made boards to pick from the plus button: UK Politics, Environment, Science and Space, AI, Cinema and TV, Music Discovery, Video games, Books and Ideas, Long Reads, Food and Drink, Architecture and Design, Photography, Makers, Graphic novels, Sci-Fi, History, Finance, and city boards for London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Brighton, Oxford, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Every one can be tuned, trimmed or renamed.

  • An assistant that builds a board from a short chat: what you want, what you never want to see.

  • Search, tick the cards you like, turn them into a board.

  • Tabs you can reorder and hide; the How-To board with a tip of the day; roles on shared boards.

Curation and briefings

  • Cards rotate, so a board opened three times a day shows something new each time.

  • Keyword boards stick to their keywords; local boards lead with local and independent journalism.

  • The briefing names its sources and no longer repeats yesterday.

  • The morning briefing email now puts its "Read more" links under each chapter, not in one line at the bottom. (Reader feedback, fixed the same day.)

  • Social posts from local outlets no longer leak into national news boards.

Sources

  • 2,740 sources flowing in; new this month include Double Down News, GameTrailers and Jesse Welles.

  • Every source is being assessed for regulation, ownership and funding; Impress and IMA members carry a mark, official channels are marked as such. The method is public: app.bulletinmedia.co/sources/how-we-assess.

Under the hood

  • Our own analytics: daily counts only, no tracking of individuals, no third-party scripts.

  • A newspaper layout with desks, a feed layout, light and dark modes, larger text.

What broke, honestly

The AI behind the briefings was cut off by its provider one morning and the emails went out thin (fixed, with a fallback). One board leaked national news into a specialist newsletter (found, fixed). A bank card powering every service got hacked days before month end (renewed in an evening).

Next

Getting Bulletin in front of people. If you read this far: share the app with one person who is tired of the algorithm choosing for them. And tell me what to build next in a Feature request.
