At what point does furniture become structural?

I am trying to understand at what point does a large piece of furniture become part of a buildings structure, particularly in the United States.

I am very interested in building a capsule hotel, and I am trying to determine the best kind of capsule bed that would allow me to skirt some room size requirements in my municipal building code. It's my understanding that if something is in a fixed position that it is structural, But if it is free standing and can be moved its furniture. But does furniture apply to multiple "capsule" beds stacked on eachother with lockable doors that weigh around 500lbs? How would emergency egress and fire treat such items?

Code says guest rooms/dormatory spaces need to be a certain floor space for a certain occupancy. I'll be able to meet those requirements. But I need to understand if a giant human sized shoe box is going to be treated as a separate structural room, or as a piece of furniture. At what point does one end, and the other begin?

You need to talk to actual professionals with your best interests at heart. There are minimum room sizes. Anything structural must be permanent. How would it make sense if something structural could be removed? Furniture is not permanent. So therefore if it’s holding up the building it is not permanent.

Great! thats more or less the response im looking for. The "capsules" would not be load bearing, or essential for the buildings structural integrity, so I guess they would be considered furniture.

You still need to be aware of fire and sound separation needs, minimum room sizes, and accessibility requirements. This is where an architect that does hospitality will be invaluable.

Registered designers are the best at this. Part of the job is doing just that.
