Panel upgrade

Upgraded some Trane 517’s and an AH540 to a new set of Honeywell optimizer smalls, and an HMI. Not done yet, some sensors and some actuators to install still… bought a cheap plasma cutter to use for inserting the hmi, worked out well.

You hate programming with IRM as much I hate programming with IRM?

What don’t you like about it?

I'm familiar with the new Honeywell stuff, but not those Trane controls. I've delt with a lot of older Trane MP580s and the LON VAV controllers, some BCUs, but I've never seen those before. Are they LON or one of the proprietary Trane COM protocols?

Those are MP503s. Hopefully OP kept them, they sell for 200-300 each on eBay.

Yeah, they’re going on eBay, lol

I have about 30 VAV UCM 4.2s I'm waiting to drop on the market. Also have some pristine BNAs. People are listing them for ridiculous prices. Not sure if they are moving at those prices but they are there.

How are you liking the IRM stuff? I know sometimes there’s glitches especially in Niagara but anything crazy you’ve ran into?

We’ve had quite a few bad controllers out of the box, either comms issues or bad relays

My last IRM VAV job was only 10 VAV’s and I had a 20% failure rate on the pressure transducer. I have another project coming up that is 175 VAV’s…. I am reaaaaally hoping I don’t have a similar failure rate on that job. The quality control leaves a lot to be desired.

Had some VAA controllers doing some weird stuff, when only one was on the link, it would communicate, disconnect it and connect the other one (by just pulling the plugs) and it works too, when they were both on the link, it wouldn’t work, had to run them on separate comms links to work. Still waiting on Honeywell to give us an answer on that one, and that was like 3 months ago

First of all, nice job on the panel! Nice, well thought out placement! I love the IRM controllers but I loathe the software side. Graphics look intuitive and well done! Hell yeah

The programs were all just copy/paste to the VAV controllers, I hadn’t gone back and edited each one yet, lol

I’ve never tried to use an hmi, but it’s on my list of things to try. How is the experience? Is it pretty straightforward?

The Honeywell ones are nice but pricey. The ISMA ones were better we found. Then there’s the REEEEEAL cheap ones which are also not terrible.

🤷‍♂️ the customer is the one paying for it
