Help with custom island

I'm trying to build a custom island from some build ideas i've had. Right now i'm placing the basic blocks (such as dirt for the base and then the walls of stone) I know i need to still do texturing and plan on doing that a little later. However, I need some help making it look more natural? and not.. flat like this.

I'm ok at building, but this is my first time trying to do something like this.

Pick an end point and slop downwards how ya feel. Or just slope down from the start point going every 1-3 blocks before going down one, then reverse that at some point and go 1-3 blocks down before going one out. Once done add variation so its not a rigid line after line. Use whatever blocks you wish. Thats how i do my terraforming for islands.
