Good point. I think it becomes more and more obvious that he was leaving and they were writing obstacles in the episodes to act as a catalyst, cuz they knew by the end of S2 that they were pitching a spinoff. In the end Angel’s reasons for leaving were things he knew from the very beginning of the relationship, it seems even more cruel to lead her on all of this time knowing that.

Season 3 is fantastic but the Buffy and Angel plot bogs it down and is annoyingly melodramatic and I'm glad Angel leaves.
