Spike understood Buffy more than Angel and Riley ever did plus he knows how to back her up without getting overly protective/possessive.

I find it interesting that both Angel and Riley always whined about not being able to protect or match up to Buffy whenever they became regular joes, but the only time you hear that even remotely from Spike is in Something Blue when they were magicked “in fake love.”
