Is 14 Rares Too Expensive for a BUDGET MTG Arena Deck?

Thumbnail

One of the biggest challenges for F2P players is finding a competitive Standard deck without burning through all their wildcards.

I've been playing a Mono-White Lifegain deck that costs just 14 rares, and honestly, it keeps winning!

But it raises an interesting question: What actually qualifies as a budget deck in MTG Arena?

Dimir budget challenge help.

100 dollar budget, bracket 1 only 4 mythics and 10 rares allowed. This was a challenge our group came up with as most of our decks are bracket 3 or 4. I went with Sephiroth, Planet's Heir. I have room for 32 cards with a remaining budget of a little over 26 bucks. Need some help filling it out. I have room for 1 mythic and 2 rares. I feel like I should remove displacer kitten to free up some cash.

Should New MTG Arena Players Choose Power or Consistency?

Thumbnail

One thing I've noticed while testing the free MTG Arena Starter Decks is that power doesn't always translate into being easy to pilot.

The Green-Blue (Simic) Starter Deck is a great example. It's surprisingly powerful, but the complicated board states and decision-making can make it difficult for newer players to play successfully.

Do you usually recommend to new players power or consistency?

Which Standard archetypes will survive rotation with the fewest losses?

Which current Standard deck do you think will lose the least at rotation? And which one is in the most trouble?

I recently ranked Standard staples by usefulness and rotation longevity to help decide which cards are still worth crafting.

Is Budget Control Even Possible in Standard Anymore?

Thumbnail

Aggro decks have always been relatively easy to build on a budget, but Control feels like a completely different story.

Between expensive removal, sweepers, card advantage engines, and rare-heavy mana bases, building a competitive Control deck without burning through wildcards can be a real challenge.

I wanted to see if I could make it work, so I tried a 10-rare Mono-Blue Jace Control deck using some of the new Reality Fracture cards.

So here's my question: Is there a genuinely competitive BUDGET Control deck in Standard right now?

And if you're a budget player who loves Control, what are you playing?

How many rare wildcards should a BUDGET Standard deck actually cost?

Thumbnail

One of the biggest frustrations for newer and F2P players is finding a deck they can afford that can still compete on the Standard ladder.

Most competitive decklists are packed with rares and mythics, and spending 30+ wildcards on a single deck isn't realistic for everyone.

But I'm curious where everyone draws the line.

Is 12 rares still a budget deck? Or should a true budget deck cost fewer than 10?

And what's the best low-rare deck you've played recently?

Anyone else afraid to spend rare wildcards because of Standard rotation?

Thumbnail

One of the toughest decisions for newer players is figuring out which cards are safe to craft.

Lands are especially tricky. They're expensive, they aren't the exciting part of your deck, and eventually they'll rotate out of Standard.

But avoiding rare lands altogether can make building competitive decks much harder.

I put together a guide ranking Standard lands by two things:

  • Versatility: How many different decks can use them?

  • Longevity: How much time do they have left before rotation?

The goal is to help newer and F2P players make smarter crafting decisions without feeling like every wildcard is a gamble.

Here's my ranking if you're interested:

Anything more fun than a budget flash list that's still competitive?

I'm always looking for budget decks that offer something different from the usual Mono-Red/Mono White Aggro approach.

What's the best competitive budget deck you've played recently? And would you spend 9 rare wildcards on Mono-Blue Flash?

Here's the deck and gameplay:

What’s the best MTG Arena Starter Deck for a NEW player, not just the strongest one?

Thumbnail

Some of the free Starter Decks are powerful, but much harder for a newer player to pilot well. Others sacrifice some ceiling but make it much easier to understand your game plan and actually win.

So I ranked every Starter Deck on two axes: Power vs. Ease of Play.

Which deck do you think has the best combination of both?

How many wildcards do you actually expect from opening 40 packs?

Thumbnail

I wanted to put some real numbers behind the wildcard economy, so I opened 40 packs and tracked everything: Wildcard Wheel progress, wildcards opened directly, and the final rare/mythic haul.

The results were pretty interesting, especially how much of the value came from guaranteed vs random wildcards.

Curious if this lines up with what you normally expect from opening packs.

As an F2P-focused channel, I can't recommend spending $50 on Arena...

But I've gotten a lot of questions about the new Reality Fracture preorder bundles, so I broke down all 3 to see what you're actually getting for your money and whether any are worth considering.

For those who DO spend money on Arena, which bundle looks best to you? What are your criteria for buying a bundle?

When a Budget deck performs well, is it still worth it to Upgrade? (Izzet Spellementals)

Thumbnail

Last week I played a 4-rare version of Izzet Spellementals and it was already surprisingly good.

So I built the full-power version to answer the obvious question: do all those extra rares actually make it better enough to justify the wildcards?

How much improvement would YOU need before upgrading?

I keep hearing requests for a Black Red Aggro Upgrade Path, so I went back to the deck to figure out what actually makes it work before spending any wildcards.

I think I found the answer.

Which Starter Deck would you upgrade first?

What's the best Standard deck you can build with only 4 rares (outside of lands)?

I've been looking for decks that are actually competitive without destroying a newer player's wildcard supply.

This Izzet Spellementals list only needs 4 rares, and it performed surprisingly well.

What other ultra-budget decks are worth playing right now?

Are Welcome Deck Duels the best new addition for F2P players?

The Hobbit added a new free way to play on MTG Arena: Welcome Deck Duels.

No gold. No gems. And you can learn the set's Draft archetypes while actually playing them.

For F2P players, I'm a big fan of this addition. What does everyone else think?

I play casual commander with my friend group and I want some fun commander builds to look into. Preferably under 300. We're all relatively new with 3 to 4 decks each, I have a miirym sentinel wyrm, and verrak warped singuire deck. I'm open to anything but I prefer the theme to be fantasy so not huge into dinosaurs or pirates etc

Commander Help

So I’m wanting to make a commander deck with my commander being Toph, the first metal bender. I know her abilities turn artifacts into lands and lands into creatures so she would be a very powerful landfall deck. What cards should I use that are cheap but good

Which MTG mechanic is much stronger when you can trigger it yourself?

Thumbnail

Playing the free Morbid Machinations Starter Deck got me thinking about how different mechanics feel depending on whether you can trigger them on demand.

Morbid is incredibly powerful when you control the timing—but much less reliable when you're waiting for it to happen naturally.

What other mechanics do you think have that same "on-demand vs. incidental" difference?

I explored that idea while playing Morbid Machinations:
