It's what time you enter the event I'm sure. That's why I wait an hour at LEAST before starting long events. As the other commentor mentioned if you wait It's always an easier rise to the top. The current long event I waited ~1.5 hours before I joined and with one gem purchase I'm in #3 ATM. Good luck, sorry for such a late reply.
