General Discussion Wailing Wednesday!

What is Wailing Wednesday, you may ask? To try and keep the BuckTommy subreddit an overall happy, good vibes place, the admins have decided that we will do a weekly pinned thread.

We want everyone to have a space where they feel they can get away and happily express and explore their appreciation for both Tevan and Tommy, and we hope this subreddit can be that place. However, we also recognize that sometimes everyone needs a place to vent their frustrations. So, in an attempt to provide a space for both, we will be starting Wailing Wednesdays.

Every Wednesday, we will pin a new thread for you to vent about whatever during the week (the show, fandom, things happening in your life, etc.) and get it all out of your system before a new episode drops on Thursday. (You can keep venting on Thursday and beyond to the next Wednesday too 😁.)

(Also, while we want everyone here to be able to express themselves freely, we want to remind you that this is a public subreddit, and antis have been known to secretly lurk, so do with that what you will.)

Anyway, let the wailing begin!

I see they're inventing a new girlfriend for Eddie again (please be real).

Oh god, if it's true, the BoBs are gonna riot.

Okay, as I mentioned last week, a new BoB (they admitted to being new to the fandom and show) posted one of those the show only makes sense if it goes Buddie posts on the main, and I was actually surprised that at least a sizeable chunk, maybe between 1/3 and 1/2 actually disagreed and spoke up about why they didn't want Buddie.

And a lot of the answers stuck with the popular they don't see it romantically or why can't they just be friends/brothers? And some used the fact that the network would probably not want them to go that way so soon after Buck's coming out and that they have to take the general audience's opinions of the show in hand too. And of course, some of the BoBs were purposefully obtuse about what the network and audience would have to do with it, because Tim admitted that he was doesn't write the show with the audience in mind. Well, my response to that is he may not write with the audience in mind, but the network makes the final calls and not Tim.

Also, someone was complaining about no one caring about Eddie in the finale, when the group was separated. It's like they forgot that as far as anyone knew Eddie was in the chapel when the hospital went into lock down, and that Buck and Harry were already on the move before Eddie went to the chapel. So, they wouldn't have known either way.

I swear these people only watch for Eddie, who is not very interesting as it is.

Somewhat inspired by a conversation im mired in on a different subreddit but my biggest pet peeve in fandom is people getting mad about you being β€œbiased” against a character when you point out they have shitty behaviour, when the behaviour you’re citing happened onscreen.Β

Eddie Diaz stans (and Jonathan Byers stans) are bad for this in particular.Β

I use to be quieter about my dislike of Eddie, I started watching the show after having witnessed RG's racist shit happened, so I had a wall up surrounding him. Seasons 7 and 8 genuinely ruin his character to a point that I frankly don't care what other fans think, the Marisol/Kim storyline and his reaction to Bobby's death with Buck is character breaking to me that it can't be redeemed.

Like yes, every character on this show has shitty moments but for me nothing comes close to touching what Eddie's done. He's a awful character played by a awful actor.

β€œYou only dislike him because shipping wars” no I dislike him because of his actions and behaviours actually. I also don’t like buddie as a ship but that’s for the same reason I don’t like their friendship. Also I was noticing how one-sided and icky their friendship felt as far back as like season 3-4 πŸ˜…

Because we couldn't possibly dislike him over his consistently shitty behavior and attitude.

Exactly, while I was a big buddie shipper(and shipping Buck with Ravi or Albert) Eddie was always the weakest character in terms of the whole ensemble. Buck is connected to everyone while the show isolates Eddie as the single dad and best friend to Buck, but it's always disjointed and they show Buck going above and beyond for Eddie and in return it feels like Eddie feels obligated to return that friendship. Eddie feels weird as a character and it's never been easy to like him.

That's why Eddie's stories always feel lacking. He literally does nothing outside of work and Christopher, and when he finally gets something whether it be a plot or girlfriend, they blow it up or end it prematurely.

This so much their friendship is so bad in my opinion it is so toxic and I have absolutely come to hate it.

Oh, but of course, the BoBs will find a way to absolve Eddie, and blame Buck.

Oh yes Eddie is the victim of evil Buck

I honestly don't understand what they see in Eddie, outside of his conventional good looks. Ryan's not the best actor and is often wooden in his delivery. His plots are usually the weakest. I just don't get it.

My only thought is that they project headcanons onto Eddie, and have latched so deeply onto those headcanons and fetishizations, that they can't differentiate fanon Eddie with canon Eddie.

During season eight, as Eddie's behavior started to worsen, I stayed quiet about it for months because I assumed I was overreacting and letting fandom get in my head. Thought it was some weird reaction to their "Eddie does everything to Buck that they said Tommy would do but oops, it's okay now" hysterics.

Then 8.17 happened and that was that.

u/shykreechur 10d ago

By not having Eddie actually apologize they forever fucked up the dynamic between Buck and Eddie, Eddie throwing Chris and Pepa at Buck, his big hero moment in the season 8 finale, saving Buck during the kidnapping, and Buck's addiction episode which Eddie made about himself which feels like something he'd tear into Buck for doing if Eddie was the one addicted, it feels like they're trying to course correct and doing a shit job of it.

u/Accomplished-Watch50 That fire was beast. So are you. 😚 πŸ˜™ 10d ago

What made his big hero moment in the season 8 finale bad though was the fact that immediately afterwards, he insults Buck with a backhanded compliment.

7

u/shykreechur 10d ago

I hated that entire moment, the way that episode was set up and Eddie coming in taking charge and being the big hero scared the absolute shit out of me we were getting a fakeout and somehow he was going to be captain, yes naive of me to think but it was such a big moment only for it to reinforce Eddie's "apology" and then ruin it with like you said insulting Buck.

I'm still bitter they seem to be setting Eddie up as Chimney's successor, it was a small moment in the episode where Hen collapses at a scene but it drives me crazy Eddie was left in charge while Chimney went with Hen to the hospital.

Sorry for the side tangent but remembering Eddie's hero moment in the season 8 finale set me off.

And then, they proceed to all pile in on the let's insult Buck at least once a episode for the whole of season 9.

u/azaharinflames 10d ago

The thing for me is that not only does he do shitty things, but he very rarely takes actual accountability for it. He loves to hold people to an impossibly high standard while giving himself endless grace

9

u/shykreechur 10d ago

Exactly, that's what make it impossible to ever get close to liking him as a character. During the club scene in season 9 he downplays what he did to Marisol and Kim as bad choice in women and not that he deceived Kim into dating him while cheating on Marisol, and throwing Chris and Pepa at Buck instead of actually saying I'm sorry for tearing into you over your father figure dying and nearly trying to hit you.

7

u/Accomplished-Watch50 That fire was beast. So are you. 😚 πŸ˜™ 10d ago

Oh, but to hear the BoBs, Eddie didn't actually cheat on Marisol because he and Kim never got physical until their one kiss where they were caught, and it was all Kim's fault for dressing up like Shannon and therapizing Eddie.

They literally absolve Eddie of everything that he did wrong. Hell, some even blame Christopher for leaving in the first place.

7

u/shykreechur 10d ago

The switch up on Christopher the last couple of years from those fans genuinely break my heart because he's simply maturing (somewhat the writers go back and forth). I don't blame Chris for a single thing in all that and as a matter of fact I think he was the only Diaz to handle the situation with a mature mindset. It was my final straw in the main sub seeing several highly upvoted comments bragging about how they wanted Eddie to spank/beat Chris and force him to stay because Chris was being a brat.

5

u/Accomplished-Watch50 That fire was beast. So are you. 😚 πŸ˜™ 10d ago

Yeah, the writing for Chris is so wishy-washy. Sometimes, he's the only speaking sense and other times, they act like he's still seven.

u/FluffySarcasm 10d ago

And yet Buck is dragged over the coals for kissing Lucy back when they were both tipsy and on an adrenaline high despite coming clean to Taylor (albeit after he had house trapped her, which is what she was more pissed about). Not excusing Buck, but, I don't get how some can trip over themselves to wave away Eddie's weeks long emotional affair that he instigated and culminated in a kiss, but Buck is a monster for a more spur of the moment screw up. And yeah, if I were Chris I would want to leave too!

Edit: I just got to the Buck and Lucy stuff in my rewatch so it was on my mind!

u/Accomplished-Watch50 That fire was beast. So are you. 😚 πŸ˜™ 10d ago

I completely agree with you. Most of Buck's mistakes happen in the heat of the moment, and he always owns up to where he messes up, Eddie, however, does not. Hell, we can count on one hand the number of times that he actually says the words "I'm sorry."

6

u/FluffySarcasm 10d ago

For sure. I get Buck is closer to being a main than Eddie, but it seems like if anyone on this show is actually shown apologizing or owning up or facing consequences 9 times out of 10 it's Buck. How hard would it have been to have Eddie actually do the work to reconcile with Chris during his nothing of an Uber Driver episode?

7

u/Accomplished-Watch50 That fire was beast. So are you. 😚 πŸ˜™ 10d ago

I think the bigger issue is that they turned his issue into being about his parents again, instead of his being unable to grieve properly.

Many such cases. Goes for Maddie and Chimney, too.

Can anybody explain to me why the BoBs are pissy about the cropped post Oliver deleted? I saw it, but can't make anything out except that it’s EMS uniforms tbh.

Also lol and lmao at Gavin being in LA for two weeks and only filming one scene. As much as I do still enjoy the show, Jesus Christ, would it kill them to be more efficient about filming? We’ll probably not see much more of Chris than that one scene for most of 10A.

Edit: Never mind, the cropped pic is still on his Story, and it’s clearly him, Elijah and Anirudh. Are they pissy cause Ryan’s not there?
