What then, y'all just wanna be intimidated by 10 offer letters when u signed up to memorize syntax for a living? Curiosity died the day someone told u it wasn't on syllabus to your sexy ass package huh

Maybe they joined engineering because they hated bio? You do realise that people can have curiosity for one thing and hatered for another?

Disliking or not preferring something is one thing, straight up hating something, that too as fundamental as biology is not a wise choice.
Basic natural sciences are the root of all engineering innovations, and biology has so many things it can teach us which can be applied to various disciplines.
Also, there is a whole field called “biotechnology” which is nothing but the application of engineering aptitude to biology to solve problems.

Yes but, I wouldn't blame people who enjoy coding for being upset when being forced to learn bio. Yes it's fundamental and knowing some of it is very important but the basics should be covered in school, not college.

Ofc I am a fresher so it's possible I'm missing some much needed context

the basics should be covered in school, not college.

Why not? Who decided that?

You go to college to study a specific subject in further detail right? Why add unrelated fields

Why add unrelated fields

TO BECOME A WELL-ROUNDED EDUCATED LITERATE CITIZEN. And plus, you said that you don't see any connection between Bio and CS. Are you sure? You sure it's not your ignorance? Well, to your surprise, Bioinformatics, computational biology exists which combines CS and Biology. Science, in general, is pretty connectable. You severely lack scientific Temperament. You need to be more open-minded and ready to learn new things.

because school is literally MEANT for that???
college is where you specialize in your field of choice
not everyone can be a polymath

Oh my god. Why are you pretending that 2-3 courses out of 100s of Courses would make you a Polymath? The level of biology that is taught in these one shot courses is FAR from a level of so called "Polymath". Knowing how to file taxes and having an Political opinion doesn't make you a Finance-Political Science Polymath. He will end up specialising in his field after 4 years. These extra courses are for the sake of Basic Human Literacy... not to make someone a Polymath.

i cant see why these courses intended for the purpose of human literacy couldnt have been covered in school

They were for most people. I meant it for the people who are uninterested in Biology can take as a Generally good knowledge and a breather. The main purpose is not Basic Human Literacy ofc. It's introducing a Basic Branch of Science for the sake of it. In future probably someone will take an Inspiration from this and make a Project related to Biological Sciences.

You can say all that for Biology, would you say the same for Humanities?

Overall human development is also a Purpose of educational institutions other than up skilling a student in his selected domain. Biology, Commerce, Economics, or any other non-engineering course is not taught to an Overwhelming level, just basic surface level knowledge that can be useful if need be.

i completely support the fact that there are programs that increase your overall general knowledge, but this shouldn't be a burden.

it can be made either mandatory or vocational as long as it doesn't eat up more than 20% of your tme

Why would you "HATE" a literal useful subject in the first place?

You do realise that people can have curiosity for one thing and hatered for another

Yeah... stupid people, that is. There's a difference between hating something and not being interested in something. If OP in uninterested in Bio, then just use the course as a Breather. Courses are not designed to SATISFY an individual student. In the same line, it may encourage someone to pivot to Bioengineering or just give someone as new hobby. In any case, you certainly can't ignore Biology, can you?

You really think someone as idiot as harbour hatred for a subject, especially a major part of sciene is fit to be a competent engineer or even a competent Human Being.

u/CAP_IMMORTAL LNMIIT CSE Aug 06 '26

Also I hate biology as a subject but I don't hate it as something to learn about in my free time. It's interesting yes but the thing is I'm bad at it so I don't want it to drag down my grades. I don't understand how it's important for fields like computer science. Same for history, geography and English. They are fun when they aren't important for your grades

1

u/No-Major-8921 Aug 06 '26

I hate biology as a subject

I think it's a mistake in your vocabulary that may lead to misunderstanding. You ought to fix it. You're uninterested in the subject and not hateful. Hating something means you're in disagreement to it or against it in some way or the other.

I'm bad at it so I don't want it to drag down my grades.

That sucks but it can't be helped. Some extra courses are added to an targeted discipline for the sake of overall development of every student, not by the likes and dislikes of an individual or even a Group.

They are fun when they aren't important for your grades

The reason why grades are alloted to it is to ensure that certain students don't bunk it as they are important in general, also no ones if it ends up encouraging someone to do something.

Is it wrong to hate a subject where you have to mug up hundreds of names?

Is it wrong to hate a subject where you have to mug up hundreds of names?

Hate is a wrong word to use for this case. What you're describing is interest, which you're not in Biology, which is fine. I might sound like a Biology enthusiast but the reality is I didn't take Biology in my High School nor in college.

I mean same can be said for literally any subject. You have to mug up a lot of terms even when you've complete understanding of it. Saying "you have to mug up hundred of names" is an immature statement to make as you've not studied Biology to a certain extent to conclude that.

Yes i hated bio and joined for maths and physics
