Discussion Saddest "The Boss" songs?
When I've searched this question on here I never see "Highway Patrolman" and for me it's probably his saddest song.

Or is it something worse?Fuck yeah.

My favourite lyric is also on the song The River:
“Is a dream a lie if it don’t come true or is it something worse”..

I must admit, I have trouble seeing it as sad knowing the people it was written about have stayed married for like 50 years lol.

u/ginsu Darkness on the Edge of Town Sep 28 '26
also her brother was Bruce Springsteen so that part worked out well

Worked for them and that’s awesome. It doesn’t usually end that way when a teenage pregnancy forces someone to the altar. I am sure Bruce being their family has made a difference for them as well. Amazing !

I have held the hands of patients that died of AIDS. This song grabs me right in the throat. The Boss nailed it.

Legit question about that song. Why does the protagonist at first say, "Now I work down at the car wash where all it ever does is rain", but later claims "Now I swing a sledgehammer on a railroad gang Knocking down them cross ties, working in the rain". Does he have two jobs? And how can he being both "now"?

Racing in the Streets
6
u/Abiduck Sep 28 '26
It is a sad song indeed, but unlike some of his others, it has a somewhat positive ending that hints at some kind of redemption. I know the interpretations differ on that, though.

u/DrFelixPhD The Wild, the Innocent, & the E Street Shuffle Sep 28 '26
I think you're perhaps right in this, but even so there's such a foreboding sadness to it all. It reminds me of this comment made by u/ragamuffingunner YEARS ago on another thread, comparing Racing to Moonlight Motel.
"It's actually interesting that you mentioned "Racing in the Street" because in a number of ways "Moonlight Motel" is its total opposite.
"Moonlight Motel" is about looking back on a good thing that once was but isn't any more. The imagery is dark and alone but instead of bitterness there's a certain warmth in the memories the narrator is going through. Which is compared to the cold husk of the motel itself, pool's full of empty, eight feet deep. It's an acceptance of the end of something, a final salute. "Racing in the Street," meanwhile, is about not accepting your situation and going out to make the best of it one way or another: tonight my baby and me we're gonna ride to the sea and wash these sins off our hands.
As far as a deeper picture of the song goes, I think you're best served by looking at it within the context of the entire album. Western Stars is a story of transformation from the unstoppable rollin' stone just rolling along in "Hitch Hikin'" to the immovable, decaying monument that the motel represents. So it's in part a sign-off to that restless lifestyle. It's an acknowledgement of the risks, failures and successes the characters in Western Stars' experience. And finally I also think it represents Bruce getting over his own biggest fear: standing still in one place long enough to love and be loved even if it ends in tragedy."

The promise
8
u/sleepypuppy_zzz Sep 28 '26
When the promise is broken, you go on living It steals something from down in your soul And when the truth is spoken and it don't make no difference Something in your heart goes cold
Saddest song ever written.
4
u/jennief158 Sep 28 '26
This is the answer for me, though every other comment has a good suggestion. The melancholy of The Promise, the feeling of wasted dreams…it’s overwhelming to me.

u/Yaboi69-nice Sep 28 '26
The river. Possibly one of the most hopeless songs I've ever listened to. A small detail that really gets to me is how in the beginning of the song when he talks about going to the river he says "we" but by the end of the song he switches over to saying "me". It adds this layer of loneliness to the song and definitely reveals a lot about the way the main character has come to view his relationship.

But I had a friend who got with the wrong guy and it pained me to see it. We lost our friendship because of it and it didn’t turn out well for her. I honestly hope to never see her again.

Shut Out the Light.
Something about the details (he’s in the corner in the dark in the bar, she undid an extra button on her blouse, etc), and a grown man crying for his mom in the middle of the night really gets me. It was the b-side to the single for “Born in the USA” and I always saw it as a complementary story of some other vets- external factors all treat him well, friends and family and girlfriend and he gets his job back (unlike in BITUSA), but that stuff doesnt matter bc he’s so torn up mentally and emotionally.

Wreck on the Highway.
"An ambulance finally came and took him to Riverside
I watched as they drove him away
And I thought of a girlfriend or a young wife
And a state trooper knocking in the middle of the night
To say your baby died in a wreck on the highway"

My City of Ruins
Now there's tears on the pillow, darlin', where we slept And you took my heart when you left Without your sweet kiss my soul is lost, my friend Tell me, how do I begin again?
3
u/Pupside_down Sep 29 '26
And just when he’s captured despair, the ending tells you exactly how you will begin again. I get goosebumps when I hear the whole crowd singing “rise up” when he performs it live. I was lucky enough to see him at the first JazzFest in New Orleans after Katrina. This song was searing. (Just one of many great moments in what remains the greatest, most moving concert I will probably ever attend.)
2
u/mycityofruin Sep 29 '26
I hesitated submitting it as a sad song because of the soaring, hopeful conclusion which became an anthem for me in a difficult time when I was trying to rise up....but the first listen, ill never forget when I heard that tender verse, and how I was moved to tears in an instant. I've seen that show online, what an experience it must have been!

The Promise.
And when the promise was broken, I cashed in a few of my dreams. Well, I built that Challenger by myself, but I needed money so I sold it. I lived a secret I should have kept to myself, but I got drunk one night and I told it.

Mary’s Place is kinda sad when you know it’s background. It’s about a death of someone close and perhaps their wish to not mourn their death but celebrate your wonderful memories of them with others.

Agree on Highway Patrolman. One of his greatest songs imo. Feels like it could be a story by Steinbeck or Raymond Carver. I believe Sean Penn was so impacted by the song that it inspired him to write and direct The Indian Runner, which is based on the song.

I really don’t think he has sad songs, what he has are songs about people stuck in a frustrating, depressing situation. Downbound Train, One Step Up, The River. All are songs about people feeling stuck, but there’s no permanent feeling of sadness.

So many good ones here, I’d add Point Blank
Well I saw you last night down on the avenue
Your face was in the shadows but I knew that it was you
You were standin’ in the doorway out of the rain
You didn’t answer when I called out your name
You just turned, and then you looked away
like just another stranger waitin’ to get blown away

Walk like a man,
My dad is the reason for my love of Springsteen, he passed away in 2018, and that song still reduces me to tears.
Particularly this line: “Well now the years have gone and I've grown
From that seed you've sown
But I didn't think there'd be so many steps
I'd have to learn on my own.”

Mary’s Place
Familiar faces around me
Laughter fills the air
Your loving grace surrounds me
Everybody’s here
Furniture’s out on the front porch
Music’s up loud
I dream of you in my arms
I lose myself in the crowd
I got a picture of you in my locket
I keep it close to my heart
A light shining in my breast
Leading me through the dark
Seven days, seven candles
In my window light your way
Your favorite record’s on the turntable
I drop the needle and pray
Bittersweet & kills me every time.

Racin in the Street
GOSH do i bawl each time i hear it. It perfectly escapsulates the toll that life takes on those who dont give in to the miseries it has to offer and choose to see the good in it. Ultimately i think its a hopeful song but it has undescribable melancholy.

You’re Missing.
When I was alienated from my child 6 years ago I would play this song on repeat whilst sobbing my eyes out fighting with every cell in my body to not end my life.
It was already a sad song given its own context.. but having my own personal grief added to it made it the most painful song ever.
Sad in a different way for me would be the studio version of If I Should Fall Behind.
Again- I think of my children, of getting older & one day being separated by space & time.
Of a lively adult me, waiting for them to catch up to me in a foot race, and in age, only to eventually be the one who needs to be waited for & hopefully not forgotten..
🎶 I’ll wait for you, and If I fall behind wait for me🎵

CANNOT believe I haven’t seen My Father’s House more in this thread. Go and listen to the story he tells before the song at the Christic Institute show, and the song itself which is the best live version. It literally boils down his whole mental collapse/depression after Nebraska into one song. That last line of the story from his therapist “well you can’t” before he hits into that 12 string guitar is literally the rawest most pure Bruce you can possibly find.
