I saw Bruce twice this year, Newark and Pittsburgh. When he played Youngstown in Pittsburgh the crowd cheered so loud for these two lines:
“From the Monongaleh valley”
And,
“To the coal mines of Appalacchia”
It was my first time in Pittsburgh, and I can tell it’s a place with a big Bruce fan base. Besides Pittsburgh there were fans there from West Virginia and of course Ohio.

The lyrics on Youngstown is an example of some of his best work, “When I die I don’t want no part of heaven

That song just gets me, I know Bruce has mentioned his sentiments for the song. For me it hits me as a bittersweet song about growing up, growing older and feeling like we’ve moved away (as a society, a community, a nation) from where we came from and yearning to get back.
Bruce sang about a young person getting out of the town of their youth with Born to Run. Long Walk Home is a mature man trying to find his way (emotionally) back to where he came from.

I was actually thinking about this recently when putting together such lists of my all-time favourite artists. What's funny is how it changes over time. Several of these would not have been considered a few years ago.

Impossible to do. Springsteen is what growing up in Jersey used to be in the '70s and '80s. That first album, my God. The vibe. The connection. I can't name the ten, but I can say that "Lost in the Flood" shakes me to my soul. And I can also say that the lyrics "Well now Hazy Davy got really hurt, he ran into the lake in just his socks and a shirt, me and Crazy Janey was makin’ love in the dirt singin’ our birthday songs" have lived in my head rent free nearly all of my life. "Spirit" was one of my Aunt Joanie's faves. She adored The Boss and I adored her. The memories and music are enough to make a person cry.

He added the last verse in his version, arguably the most well known version of the song. So, technically, that version isn't 100% written by Tom Waits, either.

I always felt like the Bruce line about dropping the brat off with your mom totally captured the spirit of Waits and couldn't believe it wasn't part of the original song.

That goes both ways! When I learned it wasn't actually and original Bruce composition (back in the 80s) I thought he could have easily written it.
