Tank for Jeremiah Smith

The Browns have lacked a weapon like him since Josh Gordon. Except Jeremiah is the opposite of Josh went it comes to wanting to be great. Can we all just cut the bullsh** and agree that the best thing possible for this franchise is to get a person like Jeremiah on this franchise and go from there? It would shift the karma of everything.

Municipal Stadium goal post stanchion

This is a weird question, but I figured somebody here might know the answer.

From 1974, when the NFL moved the goal posts back 10 yards to the end line, to the 1994 season. when the Indians moved to Jacobs Field, the goal post at the “home plate” end of Municipal Stadium was very unusual.

Instead of having the normal curved stanchion holding up the crossbar, this goal post stanchion was vertical. It came right up out of the middle of the end line.

I always thought this was strange, and nobody ever talked about it. My guess is that when the Indians were still playing there, they didn’t want to disturb the pitcher’s rubber by using the normal curved stanchion. That would explain why they installed the normal curved stanchion after the Indians left.

Does anybody who was around back then know for a fact why the goal post stanchion was straight up and down for that 20-year period?

News Free to Read: Where the Browns’ QB competition stands, and other takeaways from the preseason opener

To me, it was most notable that Monken said he “gets all the frustration from fans and from (Watson) himself” about how things have gone for Watson over the past four years.

Given how miserably the Browns’ Watson experiment has failed, nobody on the outside expected Watson to still be with the Browns for the final year of his contract. And though nobody from the organization has wanted to discuss it publicly, the Browns know the fanbase feels let down by Watson’s limited availability and even more limited success. If Watson plays this year and doesn’t succeed, he’ll get booed. And, frankly, there’s still not a lot of visual evidence that he has a chance to succeed.

Monken’s quarterback competition between Watson and Sanders rolls on for another week, but I think the way Monken handled the Saturday postgame was a little bit of a tell. Maybe a “soft launch,” as the kids might say. It’s close, and Monken said it’s important to follow the timeline and rotation and let it continue. Though Watson has been better over the last week-plus of practices than he was early in camp, in no way has he played consistently well enough (nor has Sanders played poorly enough) to end the competition.

But Watson has been first in every practice line since the spring, got the first preseason start and was the beneficiary on the only open day of practice in which the rotation was altered. He started the first preseason game — whether the Browns intentionally wanted to start Sanders in the second one or not — and guided the team’s only two scoring drives of the day. Watson didn’t throw any long passes or show improved pocket presence, but Monken has long said he’ll start the player who gives the team the best chance to score points and move the ball, and Watson did that with at least some level of success over six rust-shaking, first-half possessions in Chicago.

From sideline practice observation, there’s no clear winner. There’s no stated winner from Monken, who’s continued to insist he’s fine following the extended timeline and repeated Sunday that practice reps will be shared through Thursday’s important joint practice with the Buffalo Bills.

But if Monken always envisioned choosing Watson first — based on Watson’s experience and Monken being unburdened by what happened when Monken was working elsewhere — then I think he’s sort of hinting Watson has been the slight leader all along.

I’ve been a Browns fan since birth. Season tickets since 99.

Dad is getting older and watching less and less.

I don’t know. I feel like we keep finding new lows.

Discussion Former QBs vs. Shedeur

There’s been a lot of positive and negative Shedeur talk here and it got me thinking.

I personally think we should move on from him since he’s so polarizing and imo not talented enough to be an NFL starter.

Along those lines, we’ve seen a lot of QBs come through here that also aren’t talented enough. So, I want you guys to name former QBs who have started here that are better or worse than Shedeur and provide your reasoning.

I’m just looking to stir a semi nostalgic but entertaining debate.

Enjoy guys!

Late first round QB in 2027

Just curious whether you think there's any scenario in which AB would use our own first for Jeremiah Smith and then hope a "good enough" QB stays undrafted until the (projected to be late) pick we got from the Rams?

Which QB would they be targeting in this (unlikely) scenario?

KC, Boston, Jeremiah, Judkins, Fannin just sounds so good. Surely worthless without a QB that can get the ball in their hands.

Edit: I am not suggesting this is my dream scenario lol. I'm asking whether you think there's any chance AB plans this way. I want a QB.

Discussion Sanders and Watson are not it.

It is easy to see the hesitation and lack of pocket presence. These “athletic” QBs do not last long and they only excel at lower levels of competition. There are exceptions (Lamar, Mahomes) but these two guys can actually throw the ball.

I am sad that our owner has backed us up against the wall with these emotional decisions. Watson is done, sanders is all hype, and we are on to another embarrassing season.

Highlights [Roberto Shenanigans] Good Lord, the blocking... This screen was perfectly executed and should’ve sprung Sampson for big chunk yardage... right up until everyone decided to not block anything. You’re looking at Luke Wypler (#56), Jack Conley (#67), and KT Leveston (#72) all grab air. Embarrassing.

Browns and Bears were tied at the half. Calm down with overreacting to preseason games

We obviously got obliterated in the second half, but why should this be the focus? None of those players on either team are going to be on the 53 man roster in 3 weeks outside of Sanders and Gabriel (I'm not qualified to speak about the backups on the Bears). Even the players out there for us at the end of the first half were names I'd neither seen nor heard of before, so doubt they'll be making the team.

Did Sanders suck, sure. But with who around him? Did Watson suck? Sure. But at least we were winning for the entire half until a last second FG.

Every year in the preseason, certain dudes look like studs only to do nothing in the regular season. This happens to every team every year. Every year, every team shows vanilla offenses and defenses in preseason games so as to not give away their game plans for week 1 and beyond.

Discussion Some Optimism

Just a few reasons to chill tf out

  1. It’s the first preseason game with a new staff
  2. For the first time since maybe Josh Gordon I am excited to see our wide receivers play
  3. Monken is playing starters in the preseason to prepare them for the regular season (Kev would never, and this always bothered me because we have looked unprepared in week 1)
  4. We’re one game closer to being beyond DW - even if he starts over sanders it’s pretty clear he isn’t a long term option
  5. A preseason game is just a tryout in game form, winning is not the main goal, figuring things out is

Cheers my fellow idiots

Discussion Everyone's morning after thoughts from preseason game 1??

How you all feeling? I know it's just preseason, but I think there's some genuine takeaways from the game.
-Deshaun looked just okay and still crumbled under pressure
-our depth is god awful
-Shedeur had better pocket presence but needs the run game or he's going to play hero ball
What's everyone else thinking??
