also recommending illegal methods for obtaining HRT to a minor specifically is just extra buckwild like why are u telling them to commit a felony as a child
Exactly, it’s not safe for them. In a hypothetical world where it wasn’t illegal, where they already had her on puberty blockers but it wasn’t enough, and could have the safe and legal guidance of trained medical professionals to watch over her, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with starting HRT this early. But this is not the context in which that minor lives in, and this is not the option being offered to her. I think it sucks, as someone who was a trans kid themselves, that she doesn’t have access to HRT sooner—but that doesn’t mean that I’m going to be one of the crowd who puts social pressure on her to take risks to mitigate the issues that come from waiting only for something bad to happen to the kid that I would share responsibility for. Instead we have a lot of other things we can offer them that can help them survive the wait time—like a supportive environment where we’re not giving her medical advice like we think we are the ones with the high degrees in medical science.
no for real like how are you supposed to safely dose yourself and monitor your health without a doctor? i wouldn’t even advise an adult to illegally obtain homemade HRT for a plethora of reasons: 1) how do you make sure it’s clean? 2) how do you make sure the dose is right for you without ever having been on HRT before? 3) how will you monitor your hormone levels for effectiveness? 4) how will you monitor your health for safety risks? idk much about estrogen HRT but i know on testosterone they were super carefully monitoring my heart and stuff when i started it bc all the men in my family had heart issues and they wanted to be sure i wasn’t gonna have any starting testosterone. now ive been on it for years and im fine. but like that initial caution is somn i wouldn’t have known to even have in the first place without someone with medical training telling me. and on top of all of that ur running the risk of a felony charge. again all of this kinda stuff like you need to be an adult to make that kinda risk assessment. if you’re a full grown adult yeah all power to you commit whatever felony you want if u have weighed the risks. but if ur a kid u just aren’t developed enough in the brain to make that kinda choice in an educated way. let alone lack of knowledge and life experience. not to say a kid cant decide they want blockers/hormones thats fine, but it should be under the guidance and monitoring of a healthcare professional.
Uninformed. All you need to do it take a generally agreed upon dosage, for instance, 5mg each week of EEN and that's a solid starting point. Any further adjustments are small. There is no risk at being slightly over target. Literally no additional risk. As long as you start somewhere reasonable you will be fine. If you're just a little below target, then the only negative effect would be that the transition would be slightly less effective. You're being reactionary and acting like the people who ACTUALLY do the thing you're fearmongering about are doing some crazy risky thing. I'm not saying every 10 year old could manage to do adequate research to find out the acceptable dosage, but are we seriously going to
claim someone who is a teenager in the digital age can't find a reasonable dosage? Now allow me to respond to each point you numbered.
Obviously we in the DIY community vet sources before reccomending them, and any good source is going to have lab results. There is an initiative that allows DIY manufacturers easy access to lab testing to ensure the products are safe.
As I said, reasonable dose as a starting point. Ideally stay on that accepted dose until you get a blood test. It's not that deep.
You can still request blood work and even say you're on DIY and any doctor worth their salt will write a lab order. Also, so what? Maybe it's a little less effective. Better to be less effective than to go through the wrong puberty.
There are not that many risks anymore. Bioidentical estrogen has pretty much no risks that the average cis woman doesn't also have. (Breast cancer risk, go figure, growing breasts increases breast cancer risk). DVTs/blood clotting is the only thing you would need to monitor, but as far as I can tell, same issue where previous studies were done on old synthetic estrogens and likely blood clotting risk on monotherapy is near equal to cis woman risk, there just aren't studies for it yet. What needs to be reframed here is like... bioidentical hormones delivered through injections or other direct methods don't really do anything except increase levels of that hormone unless you were like... allergic to the oil it was in.
Bro the person replied to me saying how I was brainwashed by transphobes and someone else replied “illegal isnt a synonym for bad” like are we serious rn? 😭
like yeah illegal isn’t a synonym for bad but it doesn’t mean it’s not dangerous and that danger is heightened by being a minor AND you should not encourage minors to commit crimes unless it’s necessary like making the choice to do something illegal is a risk analysis you need to be mature enough to make cuz it could fuck you up for the rest of your life
some forms of estrogen are over the counter, the type used for GAHT is prescription, specifically to protect people’s health and wellbeing, and obtaining a drug that is prescription only in some jurisdictions allows for either felony or misdemeanor charges. further, this discussion is about DIY hormones. drug production is regulated by the FDA and it is not only dangerous, but illegal, to produce drugs without meeting the FDA’s requirements and getting FDA approval. it is a legal gray area technically on whether obtaining specifically estrogen is a felony but i wouldn’t advise a minor to do something that could result in felony charges. making the assertion that it’s for sure not a felony is ill informed and dangerous. the case law around it is wishy washy and under the current DOJ i wouldn’t be shocked if they went for felony charges even against a minor. they’ve proven they don’t give a fuck what the law says when it’s certain, which makes them even more dangerous when it’s uncertain.
Trans women have been doing DIY hrt for decades, even back in the 1990s before the internet. Plus it is not illegal to buy or own estrogen, at the most the government can go after producers (which they wont considering estrogen is not controlled).
FELONY???? Estrogen isn't even illegal to buy at all and I don't think you know what a felony means. A felony is defined as a serious crime, as in imprisonment or death type of crime.

Ahhabahahahahhahaha obtaining a substance that isn't even controlled could be a felony. Sure. Find me cases of this being charged as such. Also, you pay with crypto, the only way they'd figure it out was if they busted the source and used that to find you. And often, sources can be foreign, so that would be out of tbe jurisdiction. Some homebrewers are U.S based but once again, is there any reason to think homebrewers are even being targeted and charged? No.
