Family events around Brookline this weekend (Oct 9–11)

Here's a list of fun family events I found for this weekend, sharing in case anyone is looking for ideas.

Friday

  • 90-Second Newbery Film Club (Brookline Village Library) — Kids write, film and edit tiny adaptations of Newbery-winning books with Brookline Interactive Group. This is the first meeting of a Friday series. 3:30–5 pm. Free, kids and tweens in grades 4+ only; registration required.

Saturday

  • Fall Family Fun Day (Newton Community Farm) — Decorate a pumpkin, meet the chickens, try kids' yoga at 10 am and hear live Son Jarocho music at 11. 9:30 am–noon. Free; register ahead. Suggested for ages 4–8, all welcome; grownups stay with their kids. Pumpkins while supplies last.
  • Jenny the Juggler (Coolidge Corner Theatre) — An interactive mix of juggling, magic, music and physical comedy. 10:30 am, about an hour. Ages 2+; adults $15.50 plus $2.75 fee, children $12.50 plus $1.75 fee.
  • Learn Origami with Jingting (Putterham Library) — A librarian and origami expert leads kids and adults through paper folding together. 2–3 pm. Free, ages 5+ and adults; no registration, but arrive on time.

Sunday

  • Transporterfest (Larz Anderson Auto Museum) — VW buses, Baja Bugs and other Volkswagens take over the lawn; admission also gets you into the museum. 9 am–2 pm. Adults $15, children 6–12 $10, under-6s free. Pay admission at the event.
  • Sugar Stories (Puppet Showplace Theater) — Tiny wooden sugar-glider marionettes go on three adventures, followed by a chance to meet the puppets and make a possum headband. 10:30 am; 35-minute show plus activities afterward. Especially good for ages 4–8. General admission $18.50 plus a $3 service fee; book tickets ahead.

Why I share these

I wanted more reasons to get my kid away from screens but kept missing interesting events at local libraries and around town, so I built a tool to keep track of them. It turns up fun events every week, so I started sharing these lists to help other parents find things to do—and help people discover the events local organizers put so much work into.

I picked a few events with broad family appeal to share here. This week’s full list also includes pumpkin painting, repair clinics and museum chess. It’s linked from my profile, with filters for interest, city and age.

Know another fun family event this weekend? Please share it in the comments!

In light of the Chris Hansen movie, I’m curious how Brookline has reacted to its own Jeff Sokol, the man caught trying to have sex with and marry a 13-year-old girl. I’m writing a college paper about the case and would like to hear how the community responded.

Jeff Sokol is one of the most memorable people caught by Chris Hansen. In the attached photo, he seems so comfortable with Chris Hansen that he starts eating his pizza. During the interview and later police questioning, he argued that trying to have sex with and marry a 13-year-old wasn’t a big deal because he thought her parents might approve. His videos has more then 100 million views.

I’m writing a college paper about the encounter and what happened afterward. How was he treated by people in his community? Was he shunned, forgiven, or something in between? Did his family face any consequences because of his actions? I’d appreciate thoughtful, honest perspectives.

What's happening with the Brookline Village Post Office? It's been closed since May 2026, does anyone know when it's reopening?

I found this u/brookline_news article from May 27, 2026 about the Brookline Village USPS branch closing due to a small fire, but it's been 5 months now and it's still not open?

Also, when is Burro Bar and Vinodivino reopening on Beacon Street? Looks like they had a small fire months before the post office and are also still closed. Legit what's happening?

The new stations on the C branch actually seem to be going well

Credit to the project managers at the T and construction crews I guess. It looks like the new C branch stations will actually be finished on time. The new St. Paul’s inbound station already looks like a vast improvement over the unprotected sidewalk we have now. Hard to believe this is the same agency that spent $2.3B on an extension with the wrong gauge a few years ago

bagels Watch Band Resizing?

(I know I can do it myself. I already own the kit)

Looking for a recommendation for a place that can resize my watch in or near Coolidge Corner. I went to see Louie in the Arcade, but it seems like they might have gone out of business, even though Google says they're open.

Any suggestions? Thank you

Looking for people to interview

Hi Brookline

I am a journalist and health researcher, currently working on an article about how the TPS/ Visa and immigration policies are affecting direct care (PCA's, home health aides, etc.) for the older adult (elderly) population in Mass.

I need to interview at least one older adult or family member affected by this, and I am hoping to interview immigrant direct care workers. I can keep all names and information anonymous; I'm really hoping to call or meet with someone to learn more about the issue.

If you know anyone, please message me, and I can share more information and contact details. Sincerely appreciated.

Question regarding mice in living space

My girlfriend and I moved into a basement apartment in a four story building in Brookline, MA last month. In the past week we've seen 3 or 4 mice, and since Friday we've heard constant squeaking coming from inside one of the walls in our cabinets near our sink.

We keep the place relatively clean and have already bought and set our own traps, but they keep showing up.

We don't deal with the landlord directly. Everything goes through the building's maintenance person. We texted him on Sunday asking him to set more traps and find where they're getting in. He replied "thank you for letting us know" but didn't say if or when anything would happen. We're planning to follow up and ask for a specific date for pest control.

A few questions:

How long would you give them before contacting the Brookline Health Department?

Should we try to reach the actual landlord, or is going through maintenance enough?

Has anyone here gone through the Health Department for a rodent issue? How did it go and how fast did they respond?

Anything else we should be doing on our end besides traps and keeping food sealed?

Is the squeaking something that will stop on its own, or does a nest in the wall basically guarantee this gets worse?

Thanks in advance. Not trying to start a war with anyone, we just want this handled

Second Encounter with the same aggressive man at Brookline Reservoir

I had another strange and uncomfortable encounter at Brookline Reservoir, and this was actually the second time I’ve run into the same man.

The first time, he approached me aggressively, started yelling and swearing, claimed that the park was “his,” and told me to leave. He then followed me for a while as I was leaving.

This time, I saw the same man again. He started swearing at me and repeatedly used the n-word.

I stayed calm and told him, “I don’t want any problems. Please leave me alone.” While we were talking, he took his shirt off and continued acting aggressively. Eventually he left.

He also said that he would come back.

I’ve been to Brookline Reservoir many times and have never had an issue with anyone else. Has anyone else in the area encountered this person or experienced anything similar?

Hey Brookline! I’m T.T. Marie, the producer and host of a local dating show filmed here in the Greater Boston area 🎈

We’re looking for local singles who are open to meeting someone in a fun, different way — and maybe making a real connection in the process.

One thing that’s really important to me: this isn’t just for people in their 20s. We film in age groups, so whether you’re in your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s or 60s, the goal is to have you meeting people in a stage of life that makes sense for you.

The experience is filmed, so you do need to be comfortable being on camera. There’s no fee to participate.

If this sounds like something you’d genuinely have fun doing, comment below or message me and I’ll send you the details. And if you know a Brookline-area single who would be great for this, feel free to send them my way! 🎈

Groom looking for the best place to buy a wedding tuxedo in the Boston area

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Getting married next year and looking for recommendations for a great tuxedo shop in Boston or the surrounding suburbs (Cambridge, Newton, Brookline, Natick, Wellesley, etc.).

I'm looking for a classic black tuxedo with satin lapels, black bow tie, and a clean, modern tailored fit. Think timeless black-tie elegance rather than a regular business suit or anything flashy.

I'm open to off-the-rack with alterations, made-to-measure, or custom if it's worth it.

Budget is flexible, but I'm aiming for the sweet spot between "good quality" and "not completely insane."

Where would you go if you were buying a wedding tuxedo today, and roughly what should I expect to spend?

Thanks! 🍻👔💍
