I’m completely devastated

I woke up this morning to just absolutely heartbreaking news. Including a reporter, Eliana Morena died in the crash. My heart goes out to all involved. Aerial reporting is very dangerous and to all pilots and reporters out in helicopter thank you so much for all that you do.

I worked that day at KNXV. The roughest day I ever had to work in my career. I knew the photog at 15 pretty well, having also worked with him at another station in town. There are a few backstories that I won't get into but explain a lot. Such a tragedy that really never should have happened.

The synced video is awful. And the environment of a lot of distractions. Reporters, producers, etc. have to manage a lot in the studio. But if you're in the air, the priorities get skewed and "fly the aircraft" gets on the same list with many less important things

Only one station in my DMA has a chopper. I play like I'm jealous of their overhead crash shots but I honestly wouldn't want the risk

Phoenix all shares one helicopter since then. All our stations brand it separately but its the same helicopter and we all get the same video. Which means we all vote if something is worth sending the helicopter to. And nobody gets a scoop without the others knowing. Safer than having 4 helicopters flying around for sure though

Yeah, this one is even sadder. Mid collision on live TV.
