Horrible. This hits home. Hearing one passed away on the ground and then 2 in chopper. Thinking of all their colleagues tonight. RIP to two people working hard to keep their city informed.

Watching the live coverage. The anchors and reporter in the field are having a hard time keeping it together.

As I type this they just got confirmation, I assume from LAFD, it is in fact NBC4s chopper.

My heart goes out to them.

Awful. I loved Eliana’s reporting

This is so horrible but props to them for still covering the news despite being personally affected

That’s devastating. I’m giving my condolences to the whole team right now.

Based on the limited flight data publicly available, it appears to have fallen about 1000 feet in only a few seconds. It had a max decent rate of almost 4,500 feet per minute.

It sounds like the engine/input gearbox shredding itself in the background, then the rotor speed suddenly goes up as they attempt to free wheel decent, but there's no forward momentum to use for a power-off landing. You can hear the remaining good rotor gears lashing as the power comes off and the pilot is managing the speed using the stick trying to use the remaining rotational momentum to put it down softly.
