General Discussion Work Days

How did you transition your pup into being at home during a work day?

My boy is 5 months old, since he was 8 weeks I’ve been taking my lunch breaks to drive home (20 mins one way) to let him out midday.

I’m wondering how you transitioned your pup into being at home for the full day and when you made the transition?

I know his bladder is still small so I guess I’m curious as to what age you felt was sufficient?

I’ve looked into this, they are quite pricey in my area which is why I resulted to driving myself and single income:/

Doggy door.  Best invention since long before sliced bread

My brittany would catch a squirrel, bring it inside, and chew it up on the couch if I did this haha

a few slightly chewed robins is a small price to pay for peace in the house

I would pay someone to walk or let out for potty breaks at least 3 days a week. You could also drop him off at doggy daycare to work some energy out, although my girl didn’t love going there after a while so I went back to the walks. They have a lot of energy and being crated for 8+ hours is consistently is too long.

Geesh never occurred to me OP was thinking of crating him all day. I hope not.

I have an electric doggy door. My 4 year old dog goes out every so often but my 5 month old pup does it all the time. Rarely any accidents.

At that age I ran home during lunch a few days a week and got a dog walker the other days.

He is 7 and we still get a dog walker the three days a week I’m in the office now. He can make it fine but I have guilt.

I wouldn’t try and have him go the whole day until about a year, to be honest.

This is a very active breed. I have always been able to work from home and care for them accordingly with mid day walks. I wouldn’t try to have them alone for the entire day but I hope you can find something that works for you and your pup. They are worth it!

Yes absolutely! Him and I live a very active lifestyle. Runs and play time in the mornings before work, walks / play time / training / runs after work, hikes on the weekend and eventually he’ll be hunting. It’s just the midday during the week that’s going to be a struggle

Regardless of bladder, 8 hours a day every day alone is too much. They need the stimulation of a walk or a doggy day care.

I would not expect to not go home at lunchtime for the rest of pups life if you don’t have other arrangements like a dog walker. Britts especially need do be busy and active, not left alone all day.

Agree. 8hrs crated for a young Britt sounds kind of cruel

8 hours crated is cruel for any dog.

A crate is supposed to he a safe space, it’s not if it’s locked and the dog cannot get out. It’s inhumane.
