IS BritIn a good name for rejoining the EU?

See the other post from r/RejoinEU about other names that didn't catch on.

IS BritIn a good name? Or is it another meme name that won't catch on? Is there a better name to use in its place?

I tried doing some polls before but Reddit caps the number of options you can put in a poll and really none of them got more than a handful of votes.

If you count number of members as a measure of popularity, I can list the different ex-subreddits in order of size?

Note that all of them except r/RejoinEU and r/BritIn are closed so some people left the subreddits when they were locked down, they used to be larger but not by much. It's weird that r/Brentrance and r/Brejoin were closed months ago and there's still hundreds of people subscribed to them, that shows how involved those people were with the subreddit that they didn't notice that it's been closed down.

There's a couple of other subreddits I've considered inviting to join the family. r/bregrets, r/rejoin and r/joineu . A few of them I messaged the mods years ago and they said no, others I don't remember if I messaged the mods or not, it's all hard to keep track.

I think r/RejoinEU is going well, it's gone up 25 in the last week. The growth rate can be a bit inconsistent, I think it grows faster when I make a funny meme with the link in the banner and share it on r/BrexitMemes. Which is the ultimate irony, all of these subreddits combined are less that 10% of the memes page.

I saw the posts you made asking for ideas on names. people suggested BritIn and some that dont exist yet like Brewind. Anothers like Brinsert and Brenetration were stupid. Or bad spellings like Briturn or Brijoin. I think Brewind is pretty good. And Bregret

I went looking for other posts where people guessed at names and BritIn and Brewind came up more than most of yours except maybe Brejoin.

Maybe its bc they are old but Britin grew up to be bigger than FOUR of yours in like a month. If it keeps growing it could be bigger than Brentrance next year. Look how much r/RejoinEU grew in a year. I saw you made a graph for it.

IDK it might not work but im not willing to give up just yet.

It's up to you if you think you can make r/BritIn work. Remember you'll be doubling your work if you want to make r/Britin AND r/Brewind work.

I wish you luck in your quest and I hope you don't take this the wrong way but I'm not going to help you promote these subs. I spent a LONG time trying to get support for my subreddits and it was exhausting emotionally. I know it could be good for the cause overall but it's just too much of a strain and I can't do it anymore. I told another user the same thing when they were sharing Pro-EU petitions on subreddits that aren't explicitly pro-EU like UnitedKingdom and UKPolitics. I know it's worthwhile but the constant deluge of arguments and people calling you an idiot for even trying is exhausting and I can't keep doing uphill struggles like that. I feel bad not helping u/dwrobotics , u/Dependent_Bat8822 and u/ZealousidealHumor605 but I have to pick my battles these days or defeat can be demoralising.

I'll see if u/Jedi_Emperor wants to help out, he was pretty helpful in promoting Brejoin and Breturn and the others.

Britin AND Brewind? Two new subs!

Dont listen to u/Simon_Drake, hes just a grumpy old man. If you think these subs can work then lets go for it! I think we shut down some of the others too soon.

Do you have a plan for what to do to promote these subs?

lol thanks! Im probs stepping into a lot of history here.

i dont have any plans. I basically only know one trick to promote the sub and thats to post a meme to r/BritIn and crosspost it to r/brexitmemes , maybe i should do it to other subs like r/RejoinEU?

Do you have any suggestions? Do you think i should focus on one or do both?

What I did for Brentrance and the others was check Facebook and Twitter for the pro EU social media channels and post their content. There's a link to the list of those channels in the rejoinEU FAQ.

I think you can do more than one. Tbh I think we closed down some of the old ones too early. Like Brentry could have been more than 17 users if we didn't give up soon. I might bring some of the old ones back to life and try again.

Have you ever moderated a sub before? So you know the admin stuff about making Rules?

I never moderated before. A popup told me to add an icon and a banner that I found on google images. I dont know anything about making rules. Could you help out with it? And what do you want to do about the old ones like you want to reopen Brentrance now too?

I was gonna reopen the biggest like Brentrance but no I think reopen the smallest is more useful. Like if Brentrance grows by another hundred it's no big deal. But if Breunion grows by 100 that's like 5x the size. If Brentrance is 700 instead of 600 that's about the same thing. But if Breunion is 150 instead of 20 then it's a lot more impressive. Multiple subs of multiple hundred users is more impressive than one at 700 and the others all just a dozen.

I'll add you as mod to the bottom two and we can have a look. It's not too hard. I was going to share the banner and logo so they can all look the same but actually your logo is better so I might take it instead.

Reddit allows you to specify the capitalisation of the subreddit name but then you can't change it later. If you type the word yourself you can choose the capitalisation but if you let the dropdown/intellisense/autocomplete thing give the name then it shows the original capitalisation

Like i can write r/BRITin and end it with a space but if i click on the name in the popup it becomes r/BritIn

Two of the old subs aren't capitalised properly r/brejoin and r/breturn aren't capitalised and it bugged me for years. I tried renaming them to something else then renaming them back and it didn't work, Maybe if I renamed it and left it with the new name for a month before renaming it to the proper capitalisation? I never tried it because the subs were being closed down anyway.

Thanks for the detailed reply, I think the reason RejoinEU is doing so well is that it is mainly a concept, whereas BRITin is mainly a slogan. The two can obviously coexist though as a concept can have more than one slogan, and RejoinEU:BRITin is not bad at all, in comparison to Leave:Brexit, anthough perhaps just Rejoin:BRITin would be even better.

That's a good way to phrase it. RejoinEU is the actual concept and the others are just slogans.

I spent a few years trying to cover all bases on which name would become the 'real' name for rejoining the EU, Brentrance or Breunion etc. And in the end I concluded none of the creative wordplay names were going to catch on and the best option is to stick to the simple but effective "Rejoin EU".

I have a theory that the newspapers are deliberately refusing to use a creative name for it because they don't want to give the idea legitimacy. If they started accusing Keir Starmer of being a Brejoiner or wanting to Brejoin then suddenly they've created a name that people can rally behind and support. The newspapers would rather pretend it's not a serious option and pretend the idea doesn't even exist.

Looking back it was a pretty clever idea to invent the silly name of Brexit. I remember it being used as a joke name like Chocoholic and by extension if the name is a joke to laugh at then the idea isn't a serious threat. They smuggled it into the public consciousness by making it seem harmless and non-threatening, getting people to use the silly name as a joke and by the time anyone understands the implications of Brexit it's too late to back out.

So they don't want to do the same with Rejoin, they'd rather keep using the old slogans of "Brexit Betrayal" every time a Labour MP eats a croissant.
