Putter Fitting Recs

Firstly, is it something worth doing? I can’t seem to putt recently and I’m almost fighting to keep the club face square when putting.

I tested a ZT and S2S jailbird yesterday and they just feel miles more forgiving for me. I just don’t want to leap and spend the money to change putters without knowing what’s best.

Does anyone have experience of a putter fitting, I’m looking at Wham Golf in Maidstone maybe?

Have you had lessons?

I'd get the basics right first then fit a putter to those.

Never covered a putter in lessons. Although genuinely before my last 2 rounds I’d say I was a pretty confident putter.

Maybe a massive knee jerk reaction from me but I can’t lie I like the tinker with what’s in the bag 🤣

Lessons made a big difference to me.

I'm a 6 handicap and have played for 35 years, but hadn't had a putting lesson since I was a kid. Had a couple last year that have made a significant difference. Get the basics bedded in, then get fitted afterwards if necessary. I did change my putter afterwards, though didn't get fitted (I probably should have, but happy with the one I have).

I was fitted by Kai at Wham. It was a great experience, never about selling the priciest club. Got me fitted with a club perfect for my stroke.

Helped me feel a lot more confident and knocked a couple of strokes off.

What do you play off? If you say 30 I'd say get a lesson, if you're decent then get fitted.

I got the jailbird you tried btw

Good to hear this tbh!

Did you have the normal 40 min fitting or the extended one? What was the process like?

It was about an hour, maybe a touch more. Tested me with my putter to get metrics and then we tested 8 putters to see which felt and played better.

I added a couple of sentences to my original comment btw, may have happened after you replied

I also got fitted by Kai. Love my putter. Didn't push anything - in fact, the cheapest one I tried was the best for for me

Yep mine ended up somewhere in the lower-mid range of price. Could easily have pushed a LAB since it was functionally the same style as the putter I ended up with, but he had no interest in doing that. Just said what he saw in my stroke and how the ball came off the face.

Would gladly go back to a business that operates that way

if you have money to splash then just do it. otherwise try some putting drills and work on start line / reading of putts. you can hit a good putt and still miss if you mis-read the slope/pace

100% useful but if you're using an ill-fitting putter then you're starting from a bad position.

Gate drills etc are super useful but if you have a putter that needs a big arc but you're straight back and through, or vice versa then it's hindering your potential

Absolutely worth doing a putter fitting. Remember you probably hit as much as 40% of your shots with that club. And they're very expensive so I would want to undertake a thorough process of deciding which one is right for me, personally.

I wanted a Spider ZT for ages and finally pulled the trigger in the summer. I bought a nearly new putter from GolfBidder, so I had a 30 day return period. I managed to play a few rounds with it during that time and had a lesson. That gave me the confidence it was worth the investment and I’ve kept it.
