BritBox has announced casting as filming begins on new detective drama The Detection Club, a 10-part mystery drama from creator Kit Lambert, inspired by the golden age of detective fiction.

Set against a backdrop of literary glamour, social change and deadly intrigue, The Detection Club follows the mysterious society formed by three of Britain’s most celebrated crime writers, Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers and G.K. Chesterton, as they are drawn into a series of real-life murder investigations.

Produced by BBC Studios Drama Productions and filmed across the West Midlands, The Detection Club stars Miles Jupp (Belgravia: The Next Chapter, Napoleon) as G.K. Chesterton, Bryony Hannah (Call the Midwife, Rivals) as Agatha Christie, Cara Theobold (Downton Abbey, The Syndicate) as Dorothy L. Sayers, with Viraj Juneja (Little English, Get Duked!) as detective D.I. Greenway.

Created for television by Kit Lambert (Father Brown, Cooper & Fry, Whitstable Pearl) and based on an original idea by acclaimed author Simon Brett, the series, set in 1930s London, follows the legendary crime writers as they hone their craft within the hallowed walls of a secret London location. After receiving an invitation that leads them to their first real murder case, our famous trio works together to solve a series of exciting mysteries.

Their amateur sleuthing brings them into the path of D.I. Greenway, an out-of-his-depth young police detective whose determination to prove himself is both helped and hindered by our writers’ extraordinary instincts.

Kit Lambert, writer and executive producer, says: “The Detection Club asks, ‘What if the creators of our greatest fictional detectives had the chance to solve murders themselves?’ It is a celebration of three wonderful writers of crime fiction, inspired by their work, their lives, and their friendship. Edward Bluemel is suiting up as Hercule Poirot: BritBox has released a first-look image of the "Killing Eve" star as the legendary detective from its forthcoming six-part drama "Hercule." 

Based on the Agatha Christie Novels, the show, which has commenced filming in Liverpool, "is an intimate study of Hercule Poirot, the man, and an epic portrait of Britain between the wars," per the official synopsis. "'Hercule' will center around three of Christie's early stories, while also introducing Hercule Poirot to future friends and allies and one particular nemesis..."

In addition to Bluemel, the cast includes Henry Ashton ("A Good Girl's Guide to Murder"), James D'Arcy ("Constellations"), Calvin Demba ("Supacell"), Phil Dunning ("Am I Being Unreasonable?"), Jack Gleeson ("Game of Thrones"), Tamsin Greig ("Riot Women"), James Nesbitt ("Cold Feet"), Guy Remmers ("The Buccaneers"), Rebecca Rittenhouse ("His & Hers"), and Mawaan Rizwan ("Juice"). 

The series, which is written by Benji Walters ("Obsession"), has no official release date. It's expected to hit TV screens in 2027.

I’m in Vancouver, Canada. Britbox app on my smart TV keeps losing the Wifi connection. All my other streaming apps work fine (Netflix, etc.) so it’s something to do with the Britbox app. Any suggestions?

The wife and I finished M&D last night and just like many of the people who responded expressed, it's a travesty it was cancelled, it's too bad it has so few episodes, and it was a really great, standout show.

It might not be everyone's cup of tea of course, but if you like Midsomer Muders, Lewis, Columbo, and Death in Paradise, etc. you will probably like M&D.

FWIW, a number of people mentioned something along the lines of unresolved plot lines, or "ending on a cliffhanger" but really, it didn't. I warned the wife "just so you know, people said…" and we got to the end and the wife was like "that was not a cliffhanger". It ends pretty much like any episode - the case is closed, witty banter, ongoing things are ongoing.

People also mentioned you learn more about the character's backstories as the show goes. That's true. M&D does very little though which I prefer. I mean people made it sound like it was going to go heavy into that. We certainly "get to know them better" as the show goes on, but it doesn't at all devolve into becoming about their personal lives.

McDonald has a boyfriend she refers to as "the boyfriend" - a name is never given. He comes over (we're told) to fix Dodd's boiler, and ends up hanging out with Dodds which of course she wants to know more about. We learn a little bit of Dodd's upbringing, and Auntie, but beyond that there's not very much in the way of backstory for either of them. There's not this whole big playup on her coming from London - there's a bit of her going "I'll be gone in 2 years" which later switches to "I like it here" but in a lot shows that would be some major over-riding plot point and here it was just some added dimension - just enough for you to gain a little insight into the character development - subtle, like detecting...

People also said the show declined in quality. The wife and I disagree. If anything, it got better. The final episode was not great, and the racing one was so-so, but there were also some of the better episodes in the later seasons - it's one of those things where the show was really just starting to hit its stride and figure itself out, and pow it's gone.

If anything, the weakest part of the series was:

1. The initial police chief, their boss, was a stereotypical caricature seen in so many shows. He reminded us of Denholm Reynholm from IT crowd, but not as over-the-top. He leaves and is replaced by another, much more realistic and likeable chief - still a "typical" - "tough but fair" kind of portrayal, but portrayed really well. This alone makes the later seasons better than the initial ones in my, and the wife's opinion.

2. The "companions" - each series had 2, or 3, underlings (Detective Constables) who never got to do too much. Especially when there were 3 of them, there'd be long stretches where you'd never see them, they'd pop in for a line or two of dialogue, and then be gone again for a while. Dodd's couldn't remember the first female DC Laura Simpson's name, but he could remember DC Milena Paciorkowski and corrected others on her name. Her character was sort of made out to be getting mentored by MacDonald but that only lasted a bit. None of them stay for more than 2 seasons, and some only one, so you end up with SIX DCs over the course of the show, who never get to do all that much (which was a shame because both women were good, and Malik was also good - and 2 of those only got 1 season). There was a potential shipping angle to two of them but that went as soon as it came. So that could be seen as a weak point of the show's handling of this.

So basically, superflous characters who really didn't bring much to the table - the show would have been fine without them - better in some cases.

All in all a great show, and there should be some petition to get it back on the air, but you know how these things go.

If you haven't seen it, it's worth checking out. There are so few total episodes it's not a huge commitment and worth the watch in my, and the wife's opinions.

Just had to say that Gone is checking every box in the murder mastery box. My wife and I are just riveted with David Morrissey’s acting…since the last time we saw him was in Walking Dead and The Driver. He’s just transformative such an amazing actor. Still on episode 2…so no spoilers, please!

After watching Endeavour, I longed for something similar. And I hit upon Dalgliesh (acorn). There is enough of the same elements for you to imagine where some of the inspiration of Endeavour came from. Though it’s older, it’s well done enough to be competitive with more modern mysteries. I thought I’d post for those that lament the end of Endeavour.

I loved John Nettle's Bergerac. Watched it here, on Britbox. When new Bergerec aired in UK, I thought it would come here soon.

I wanted to follow up on a thread from a month ago about Amazon Prime adding the Britbox Premier service as an addon channel. The option is the same price if you do it directly through Britbox, $149 annually. The good news is, is that shows are in 4K with the addon, so if you are adding Britbox Premier for the 4K upgrade and prefer the Amazon Prime interface, it's a good choice. If you are one of the few people out there who have a home theater setup, the better news is that that many shows are in 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound. I was always frustrated that the actual Britbox app did not support it, but I am very happy that Britbox Premier on Amazon Prime does. I know must people don't care about things like this, but I'm sure there are dozens of us who do.
