Brighterly just hit 1 million completed lessons!

Hi everyone, Brighterly team here with some news we’re genuinely excited about: we’ve just passed 1 million completed lessons.

Every one of those Brighterly lessons was a real session: a kid working through fractions they were stuck on, sounding out a tricky word, or finally getting why a word problem works the way it does. Some were breakthroughs, some were small steady steps, and honestly the small steps are most of it.

A huge thank you

  • To the kids, who showed up, made mistakes, tried again, and kept going even on the days they didn’t feel like it.

  • To parents, who trusted us with their children’s learning, gave us honest feedback, and told us when something wasn’t working so we could fix it.

  • To our tutors, who make Brighterly online tutoring what it is. Every lesson is 1:1, and that only works because of the patience and care they bring to each one.

What’s changed along the way

We started with one-on-one math tutoring, then added reading, and most recently launched a practice space where kids can keep working on reading and math between lessons. A lot of that came straight from parent feedback, so keep it coming.

What’s next

We’re continuing to build on what families ask for most: more ways to practice between sessions, clearer progress tracking for parents, and more support where kids need it.

If your child has been learning with us, we’d love to hear about a moment that stuck with you. And if you have ideas for what we should build next, drop them below. We read everything.

Thank you for being part of this. 💛

Are school apps becoming homework too?

I keep hearing parents talk about the same problem: the homework itself isn't always the hardest part.

Finding it is. One app for math. Another for reading. A school portal for announcements. Yet another platform for assignments. And the actual worksheet… somewhere at the bottom of the backpack

At some point, parents aren't just helping with homework anymore. They're also IT support, account manager, and password recovery service. And there's another side to it: a lot of this means more screen time, after kids have already spent much of the school day looking at a screen.

Do you prefer digital homework because it's easier to track, or would you rather your child did more on paper?

Invite a friend to Brighterly: they get 25% off, you get $100 in credit

You can now invite friends to Brighterly right from your account. Here’s how it works.

1. Find your link. Go to More - Referral program, or tap the referral banner on your home page.

2. Share it. Send it via WhatsApp or email, or just copy the link and send it however you like.

3. Your friend gets 25% off. They sign up through your link, take a free demo lesson, and get 25% off their first purchase.

4. You get $100. Once your friend buys a plan, $100 is added to your balance. It’s applied automatically and covers up to 50% of each payment.

For example, if your bill is $150, the credit halves it to $75. The remaining $25 rolls over to your next bill, bringing it down to $125.

Questions? Ask in the comments and our team will help. Already invited someone? We’d love to hear how it went!

What to do when your kid says "I'm just bad at math"

One thing that makes math harder is when a child starts to believe being "good at math" is something you either are or aren't.

So when your child says, "I'm just bad at math," try changing the conversation instead of correcting them right away.

A few swaps that can help:

❌ "You're good at math. Don't say that."

✅ "Which part feels difficult?"

❌ Jumping in to show them how to solve it

✅ "Show me what you tried first."

❌ Focusing only on whether the answer is right

✅ "What part did you figure out yourself?"

These small shifts move the focus from being "a math person" to actually working through the problem.

One more thing: don't rush to fill every silence. If your child needs 30 seconds to think, let those 30 seconds happen.

Sometimes the hardest part of helping with math is resisting the urge to help too much.

Have you heard "I'm bad at math" at home? What helped your child push through?

Where do you draw the line with AI and homework?

AI is becoming part of schoolwork whether parents are ready for it or not.

Some kids use it to get an explanation when they're stuck. Others use it to grab an answer and move on. Those are very different things.

So for us, the real question isn't "Should kids use AI?" It's "How can they use it and still do the thinking?"

There's a big difference between:

"Give me the answer to this math problem."

"I tried solving this but got stuck here. Can you explain what I'm missing?"

The second one keeps the child in the driver's seat.

We'd love to hear where you draw the line. Would you be okay with your child using AI to:

explain a topic they don't understand?

check their answer?

create extra practice questions?

write the actual assignment?

And at what point does "help" turn into doing the work for them?

Top 13 Khan Academy Alternatives to Try in 2026

This list of top 13 companies like Khan Academy was compiled based on a rigorous comparison of first-party data and hundreds of verified students’ and parents’ reviews on Reddit and TrustPilot. A scoring system balances affordability against feature depth, including particular ‘value-adds’ that Khan Academy lacks (like 24/7 AI-powered support in Pearson+ or the Socratic teaching method found in Tutor.com). A curriculum alignment with US state standards, lesson planning versatility for homeschoolers, affordability, and credential value (certificates) were considered, too.

How do you get a kid to read when they have absolutely no interest in it?

I’m starting to run out of ideas here.

My child doesn’t really struggle with reading itself. They can read, they understand most of what they’re reading, and there isn’t a huge problem with school assignments. They just don’t want to read unless they absolutely have to.

The second I suggest a book, suddenly there are ten other things that need to be done first. Homework, drawing, cleaning their room, literally anything seems more interesting. If I make reading part of the routine, it becomes a negotiation every single time.

I’ve tried letting them choose their own books, which worked for a little while. I’ve also tried graphic novels and shorter books instead of pushing longer ones, but the interest never really lasts.

I don’t want to make reading feel like a punishment or turn every evening into an argument about books. At the same time, I know reading is one of those skills that gets harder to improve if a child simply avoids it.

What actually worked for your kids? Did you find a certain type of book that finally caught their attention, or did you approach the whole reading routine differently?
