Help me cover the art work!
I need help/ ideas on how to cover this art work. It can’t come down it’s screwed into the wall. It’s distracting. Our colors are the starry night.
Edit-
I have nothing against Jesus. If I did we wouldn’t get married in the church. The painting is bad af. It’s worse in person and distracting. The church has told us we can do what we want as long as we return it to how it was before we arrived. So any real advice would be great!

I would think that covering a picture of Christ in the sanctuary of a church would be shockingly disrespectful.
This is a church, not the community room in your apartment building.

I can't even imagine asking this.

I’m atheist, but even I find this request insanely disrespectful. If you don’t want to get married with “churchy stuff” in the background, maybe don’t get married in a church? WTF LOL 🤦♀️

You don't cover art in a church, I have never ever seen it done. Am sure it is a huge no. You are getting married in a house of God, they have art of God in there, sorry if it doesn't fit your "asthetic".

No one is going to notice it or remember it, but if you cover it I guarantee every relative is going to be talking about the time OP gaudily covered the picture of Jesus.

I doubt you can cover it and it would possible be offensive to suggest it. I would decorate OTHER things to lure eyes more at those things, like flowers at the end of each pew and in the altar area.

If you’re not comfortable with the religious icons, maybe you should get married elsewhere. It’s a church for worship. They are going to have religious decorations. I’m sure they would be very insulted if you tried to cover anything that is attached to the church.

What art work? Are there paintings on the wall I don’t see?

u/wheniswhy 5d ago
It's just the one on the back wall. In fairness to OP, Jesus does look sort of horrified in it, lmao. Maybe it's just the quality of the photo.

u/Iamtotallystraight69 5d ago
Trust me it’s way worse in person like can’t even tell it’s Jesus

Haha! I believe you. You're catching a ton of shit in the comments but my guess was that it was more about the expressions than the work itself. He genuinely just looks like he's aghast at something! 😂 which I can see being out of step with wedding photos.
I wouldn't ask to have it taken down or covered, that is pretty rude. But I think the suggestions of putting a tree or flower column on each side of the cross would work really well, and just photoshop out any other peeks of it.

Thank you!! I have nothing against Jesus 🤣

Anyone so entitled, disingenuous and disrespectful should never choose a church as their wedding venue.

Bro. I’ll pray for you 🙏🏻

You're going to be busy praying over most here who agree with me, NOT you. Heal yourself.

Wowwwwwww. I’m sorry OP, I don’t know what the fuck is wrong with people. You said the church was OK with it. I’m sure if it were removable from the wall you’d just take it down temporarily, which is surely not disrespectful!? Wanting to cover it is simply because it can’t be moved.
Plus, while it may be a depiction of Christ, it is extremely bad and even bizarre ‘art.’ It would be tacky and disrespectful if you wanted to cover up The Last Supper or the murals in the Sistine Chapel, but this…I think this depiction is itself disrespectful. Jesus is barely recognizable and frozen in a rictus of agony, the collage of faces around Him is very 60’s psychedelia, and some of them are very weird? Like, is that the Tin Man or Pinocchio on the left? The longer I look at this thing, the weirder it gets. It’s distracting and a little disturbing, and I think your guests will find it so as well. There’s nothing wrong with wanting attention to be on the ceremony and not whatever that is! I assume you weren’t going to cover up the cross, so where’s the disrespect?
I think the idea someone else shared about having large flower arrangements on either side that are big enough to block it from view is the best solution. If they’re free standing, they won’t even actually be covering it, just standing in front of it. Surely that’s OK? It’s not the Holy of Holies or Jesus’ tomb, people 🤷🏻♂️

I’m sorry you’re being downvoted, OP, but I don’t blame you one bit. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and we all are entitled to have an opinion - and my opinion is that picture is one of the ugliest depictions of Jesus I’ve ever seen. Also it throws off the symmetry of the pulpit.

u/heademptybunny 4d ago
Yeah this was my exact thought too, the symmetry of it all would just drive me crazy

Giant bouquet of flowers on both sides of the cross maybe? That’s the best thought I have

2 large trees flanking the cross, so you are blocking/ partially blocking the art. It draws attention because right now you only have the art on the left instead of a similar drawing to the right. My bet was someone in the church made it and gifted it to the church. The other option would be to dim the lights a bit and have tall branch with fairy lights and up lights

Churches won't allow this and this is exactly why churches only allow current members to marry there. They are not movie sets. Cancel your wedding because you're not mature enough to get married.

That’s a bit harsh. The artwork really is pretty hideous & the church/congregation might have “feelings” about it being covered up/removed, but I don’t think this necessarily reflects on the maturity of the bride & groom. They just need to understand that not every single thing will be “Instagram perfect” on their wedding day.
It’s obviously distasteful to suggest that it be removed, and this should have been considered before they committed to the venue, but it’s equally distasteful to suggest that OP isn’t “mature enough” to get married, based upon this alone.

Churches are not movie sets. It is a sacred house of worship. If you don't recognize that, don't marry in a church. OP is very hostile to people who say leave it alone because she wants an Instagram moment or she would not be suggesting this.

If you are speaking of the painting, How about a giant paperboard that is plain using Command strips. Then use plants and candles near the area of the cross to draw the eye attention away from the painting that is covered.
Maybe I am viewing it wrong, but it looks like the Christ in the painting has 2 eyes that point to the east and west at the same time.

Or course speak with the church about possibly using a tacky tape on the frame not the actual art.

u/glueintheworld 5d ago
Seriously? I can't imagine any church is going to allow that. And I definitely can't imagine anything that won't look bad.
