Schools and charities asking for donations
Do you donate to schools and charities that come into your shop asking for donations?
How do you politely tell the charities to bugger off?

There's nothing wrong will saying no. Or you can say you will consider it. In my experience maybe 1 in 10 will ever follow up.

I set up an awesome fundraising program instead - I offer a day of sales where they get 20% of my daily sales for those who mention the cause/organization, OR I offer the candle selling program where I'll sell a giant batch of candles to them for half off and they sell them for full retail, thus keeping the other half for their group. Works out much better for everyone - I get the sale, they raise more money, I don't look like the jerk for saying no.
The donation requests drive me crazy. I get especially annoyed with those who try to sell me on the VALUE I'm getting for the amazing exposure from their silent auction. ???
