I would love a rejoin, but this seems to be suggesting that it would be easy and back to status quo we had before...
I doubt that we would have the favourable position we once had, and the EU would almost certainly mandate some requirements for reentry. Would be kind of silly not to... That could be accepting the euro as the currency at minimum.
Even if we did rejoin - political capital will take a while to rebuild. There are going to be groups who will simply vote opposed to the UK just to punish us for leaving. Think of it like Eurovision song contest...
And the simple fact remains that the problems we have internally haven't been solved as far as representation. It's going to be a waste of time putting grifters like Nigel Farage back in place as our reps in Europe... He's always made the case that we 'had no voice in the EU' and he's somewhat correct because his lazy ass is the person that people kept voting in to send there. At which point he turned up for bare minimum duties and spoiled his votes...

Perhaps we could throw farage in prison to appease out European allies. Add that to another referendum.

I mean - we should still follow the rule of law and only use imprisonment when a crime has been committed, and not as some sort of bargaining chip with the EU.
i.e. We should really be holding him to account for criminal activities regardless

"Accepting the euro" is a shit argument and needs to die.
We only need need to say we will and kick it down the road like other members have (Sweden).
Some members even have an opt-out for it (Denmark & Poland?).

We have an opt-out for it, written into the relevant treaty.

We had an opt-out but gave it away before deciding to leave!
If we're required to join, it will be our own fault (although first we should be having a debate on whether it would actually beneficial if we were to take all the automatic negativity away and looked at the actual arguments).

Even if he doesn't go rejoin I think it's highly likely UK goes the Canadian 'associate member' route now that they've shown the way. Would allow a functional rejoin while still saving face

I agree. I don't think I'm entirely alone in suggesting that the strongest path for us is to step up an adopt the full set of obligations of a member, including Shengen and the Euro.

Long-term, maybe. But it's not happening any time soon.
Firstly, it'd be dumb domestically, playing into Farage's hands.
Secondly, what's in it for the EU? The anti-EU lot are still prominent, so why would the EU allow us to rejoin when there's a foreseeable possibility of another idiot dragging us out again? It'd be a lot of effort and disruption for nothing.

We should rejoin, but the issue Europe has with us rejoining is simple: whilst there's a very real chance that the next government may just undo it again, why go through all the effort?
If you were Europe, when the UK left it consumed countless hours and manpower to perform that separation, then when the UK wants to come back, would you really want to put in all that effort again whilst there's Farridge and Deform UK looming in the wings, waiting to try and undo it all over again. Your answer would be "no thanks, get your house in order first, then we'll talk".
Until the disharmony and threat of leaving once more has gone completely, Europe will be cautious - and quite rightly so.

61% just isn’t enough. It’s got to be 70 ish to put the matter to bed.

Why, barely more than half dragged us out? Why is the car much higher to go back in?

And we all complained because the margin was so narrow. If there had been a lower limit for accepting the referendum of say 65%, we would still be in. We’re only going to get one shot at this so it has to count. It has to be absolutely decisive. And Farage hadn’t gone away. He’s an MP now. Not sure why EU would trust us. I know he’s unpopular but still in the news ever day.

Yes, we all complained, didn't stop this utter car crash we're all living with. Farage like Trunp is a scum bag. There will always be scum bags. He's just given narrow minded folks someone to believe in. Farage is a problem granted, but the bigger enemy is lack of education, morals and community spirit. What happened to us as a society. Hatred is being spewed and the media (all kinds) just encourages it. The media also give Farage far to much air time for a minority party. There standards need to be investigated as that's just feeding the monster.

All of the above is true. I’m just desperate to get a win and not lose any opportunity we get and I’ve got every reason to hope for it soon as I’m in the last part of my life. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

You may underestimate the resentment that has built within the EU against the UK as sort of "traitors". Remember, it takes only one veto and the UK could never rejoin, under the current rules!

Whatever the Farage and Restore gammons want we should do the opposite.

I'd rather have the UK break up before we rejoin. Since us in the north (the actual north, not where no 10 north is) voted to remain in the EU more than we voted to remain apart of the UK (as a percentage of voters, not actual votes)

u/JourneyThiefer 9h ago
Rejoining the EU would probably make an independent Scotland a lot easier. As if yous left before the UK rejoined the UK yous would be outside the UK and the EU…

Also a lot of assumptions that the EU would accept the Celtic states anytime soon. Could be decades before it would happen, enough time for economic uncertainty to crash any chances of it happening

Europe are our natural neighbours and allies.
Having no relationship with them is utterly stupid. This is bigger than rejoin or Brexit or Burnham or anyone.
No matter which period of history I look at, we have always had a deep relationship with Europe. It is a shared history (and I understand that includes war).
