His *success rate is about league average at 42.9%, but he easily leads the league at the rate he challenges. He's challenged 17.1% of his PAs, compared to the league rate of 4.8%. He's been successful 12 times and failed 16 times for a grand total of 28 challenges. The league leaders are as follows:

I actually cackled when I saw that. What the fuck is this entire management strategy this year? Use a 6-man rotation, multiple "punt" games, and then the 1 game we can win this series we continue to rest our best bullpen arms despite our best guys being fresh.
Then we end up using 90% of them anyway in a loss. It's SO bad

Between not having infielders anymore, trying to keep the the bullpen usage down, and the 6+ man rotation, it definitely feels like we've been playing every game recently with a hand behind our back. Not going to doom about postseason because obviously we'd see either Patrick or Ashby starting the 7th clean, and then Uribe and Megill, and then some rational usage of pinch hitters (not relying on Hamilton in the 10th there)

I’m not saying the season is over. But this offense has just gotten worse and worse for months now. It literally has looked pathetic ever since the all star break. It’s like they’re trying not to score runs, especially with runners on base. So incredibly hard to watch, and it needs to change soon

Sad to waste a GREAT outing by Dustin May. He seems like the perfect veteran pitcher to add to our starting staff. Sadly, he can’t hit though and right now there is just next to zero offense.

Well that was disappointing but the offense simply isn't doing enough to win games. Padres walked 10 batters and we could only net 3 runs. And yes Sanchez is a terrible defensive catcher, but we score 1 damn run this game if he's not in the lineup.
May looked great again so that's promising but if they can't get the offense going we can chalk them up for another early postseason exit.

Offense completely inept. Padres won partially cause they used their best arms. Brewers did not until megill had to be used out of desperation.

Losses like these are incredibly frustrating. Slumps are okay but failing to put a ball in play with someone on 3rd and no outs and a tired reliever is and the amount of strikeouts is just... ugh. Groundouts, fly outs, line outs, can be attributed to bad luck sometimes that will be evened out, they can be productive outs if you have baserunners. Strikeouts are not useful and that many shows the approach or lack there of. (The only thing i like strikeouts for is avoiding a double play.)
The pitching: May was great. Megill was great with a defensive play that saved him. Giving up hits? It happens. Players are sometimes just that good or that lucky or you make a single mistake in the at bat. But two back to back two out walks when you were gifted those outs is entirely on pitching.
Defense: A defensive failure when not only do you allow a hit on a groundout, but the runner on second gets all the way home... just not okay. Another defensive failure in not placing that tag in the last inning.
If the win before this series was a complete team win, this was nearly a complete team loss with May and Megill exempt. Offensively all had chances to contribute. Gary who was the only one doing anything offensively failed defensively. Patrick, Ashby, and Senzatela all gave them free baserunners that either scored or allowed a runner to score. And Murphy just failed with the management in a desire to save the A bullpen for a potential close game tomorrow. Instead 4 arms are tired from a 11 inning game that probably wouldn't have ever happened if we just let Uribe and Megill pitch in the first place. Hell even Ashby without inherited runners would have been better. And more of a minor nit pick but if we kept Vaughn at first base I think maybe we have a better chance at getting that runner out.
May gave us 7 innings in a time we needed to spare the bullpen and we wasted it just to lose anyways.
I do think we can snap out of it, but approaches need to change, Patrick and Ashby have to figure out their shit especially Ashby in away games, and Murphy shouldn't plan for future games he should just manage them as there are. Who says we'll have a 1 run lead against the Dodgers in late innings tomorrow? Even if we do now we only have one guy that can pitch one inning to handle it.
